Part 1 — The Honeymoon Hotel
I wanted one weekend when Jeffrey didn’t have to ask whether I’d taken my medication.
I wanted to be his wife again, not his patient.
Five months out of chemotherapy.
The woman in our wedding photos had thick auburn hair and a body she’d never thought twice about.
The woman I was now had an inch of fuzzy new growth and scars I still couldn’t look at for long.
Jeffrey had never complained.
Through every treatment he had held my hand and told me I was beautiful.
I had wondered, in the quiet hours, whether he meant it.
So I booked the same mountain hotel from our honeymoon twenty years ago.
I bought a dress.
I wanted him to look at me the way he used to.
When we walked into the room Jeffrey’s eyes went straight to the king bed.
He said: there’s only one bed?
I laughed and said that was usually the idea on an anniversary.
He didn’t laugh.
He stood there gripping his suitcase.
Then he said he needed another room.
He went downstairs and paid for one at the other end of the hallway.
I put the dress back in my suitcase.
I cried into the pillow for three hours.
Twenty years and every insecurity I had been fighting came back at once.
He had stayed through chemo because what kind of man leaves his sick wife.
But maybe now that I wasn’t dying anymore he didn’t have to pretend.
At 11:30 someone knocked.
Part 2 — The Buttons
Jeffrey stood in the doorway.
His eyes were red.
His shirt was buttoned all the way to his throat in the warm hallway.
He said he was sorry.
I said: for finally admitting you can’t stand looking at me?
His face changed.
I started crying.
I said: just tell me the truth.
He stepped inside and locked the door.
He said: I didn’t get another room because I didn’t want you.
His hands moved to the buttons of his shirt.
He said: I got it because there’s something I’ve been hiding from you since your third round of chemo.
He opened the first button.
Then the second.
Then the rest.
He turned slightly and showed me his left side.
A tattoo.
Large.
Covering the ribs and part of his shoulder.
My name, in the script I recognized from letters he had written me years ago.
Around it, rendered in careful detail, a design I needed a moment to understand.
When I understood it I could not speak.
It was a timeline.
Our timeline.
The year we met marked at the beginning.
Each significant moment rendered as a small image worked into the design.
The place we had our first date.
The doorway where he proposed.
The mountain hotel where we spent our honeymoon.
And near the end, recent, an image I recognized as the infusion center where I had spent so many Thursdays.
Surrounded by the same art as everything else.
Not separate from our story.
Part of it.
He said: I started it when you were in your third round.
He said: I needed to do something with what I was feeling and I couldn’t do it in front of you because you were carrying enough.
He said: I went every week for four months.
He said: I didn’t want you to see it until it was finished.
He said: and I didn’t want you to see it for the first time while you were sick because I was afraid you would think I was marking something final.
He said: I wasn’t marking something final.
He said: I was marking us. All of it. The whole thing.
He said: including the part we’re in now.
Part 3 — What I Said
I stood in the hotel room in the mountains where we had spent our honeymoon and I looked at my husband’s side.
At the timeline of our life.
At my name in his handwriting.
At the infusion center worked into the design the same as everything else.
I said: you went every week.
He said: yes.
I said: for four months.
He said: yes.
I said: while I was having chemo.
He said: yes.
He said: I needed somewhere to put it. I needed to be doing something.
He said: sitting in that waiting room every Thursday not being able to fix anything — I needed something that was mine to do.
I said: you could have told me.
He said: I know.
He said: but you were managing so much already. I didn’t want to add my feelings to your list.
He said: I thought I was protecting you.
He said: I also — I wanted it to be finished first. I wanted to show you something complete. Not something in progress.
He said: because you have been in progress for two years and I wanted to give you something that was done.
He said: something permanent.
I said: Jeffrey.
He said: yes.
I said: I have spent five months wondering if you still wanted me.
He said: I know.
He said: I’m sorry.
He said: the separate room was because I was afraid the first time you saw it I’d want to explain it properly and I’d gotten it in my head that it needed to be a specific kind of moment.
He said: I over-thought it.
He said: I usually over-think things.
I said: yes. You do.
He said: are you angry?
Part 4 — The Dress
I went to my suitcase.
I took out the dress.
I put it on.
Jeffrey watched me.
He said: you look exactly like yourself.
He said it the way you say something you have been thinking for a long time and have finally found the right moment for.
I said: I don’t look like the woman in the wedding photos.
He said: no. You look like you look now. Which is what you look like. Which is what I mean when I say beautiful.
He said: I know you’ve been wondering.
He said: I know chemotherapy takes things from you that aren’t just physical.
He said: I know you’ve been looking at me trying to figure out if I still see you.
He said: I see you.
He said: I have been going to a tattoo studio every week for four months to put you on my body permanently because I wanted you to know that this — all of it, what you’ve been through, what we’ve been through — is not something I am enduring.
He said: it is something I am in. With you. Marked.
I said: you’re going to regret a tattoo when you’re eighty.
He said: I’m going to regret not getting a bigger one.
I laughed.
It was the first real laugh of the evening.
He came and stood beside me.
He said: put that dress on earlier.
I said: I put it away when you got the separate room.
He said: I know. I’m sorry.
He said: are you wearing it now?
I said: yes.
He said: good.
He said: I’ve been looking forward to seeing it.
Part 5 — The Morning
We ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant in the same corner where we had eaten breakfast twenty years ago.
Jeffrey had never mentioned the corner.
He had simply walked toward it.
Some things stay in the body.
Over coffee I looked at him.
He said: what?
I said: I want to see it again.
He said: the tattoo?
I said: yes.
We were at breakfast.
He looked at the other tables.
He said: it’s a restaurant.
I said: I know.
He smiled.
He undid two buttons.
I leaned across the table.
My name.
The timeline.
The infusion center worked in like any other part of our story.
He buttoned back up.
He said: satisfied?
I said: no.
I said: I want you to tell me about each piece.
He said: all of them?
I said: we have the whole weekend.
He said: yes. We do.
He said: Claire.
I said: yes.
He said: the dress.
I said: yes.
He said: you look beautiful.
He said it the way he had said it throughout chemo.
The same way.
I believed him this time in a way I had not been able to before.
Not because the evidence was different.
Because I had seen what four months of Thursdays looked like.
Because I had seen my name in his handwriting on his ribs.
Because the infusion center was in the design like any other part of our story.
Not a chapter he was enduring.
A chapter we were in.
Some husbands book separate hotel rooms and it means something different than you think.
Some tattoos take four months and say things words couldn’t manage during chemo.
Some timelines have infusion centers worked into them the same as honeymoon hotels.
And some dresses deserve to be worn on the second try.
You wore it.
He saw you.
He has always seen you.
That is what the timeline means.
Marked.
Permanent.
All of it.
