Eventually, I convinced myself I would probably never know.

Then one afternoon, a box appeared in my living room.

And everything I believed about the last twelve years fell apart.

The box sat in the center of the rug like it was alive.

My name was written across the top in handwriting I hadn’t seen in more than a decade.

Alice.

The letters were neat and looping.

I recognized the way she shaped the capital A immediately.

Chloe.

My hands started shaking.

Three days earlier, I had made one of the hardest decisions of my life.

For the first time in thirteen years, I had not sent my stepdaughter a birthday present.

And now she had sent me this.

My husband, David—Chloe’s father—stood behind the couch staring at the package.

His face had gone strangely pale.

“Alice,” he said quietly. “Maybe you should wait before opening it.”

I looked up.

“Wait for what?”

He didn’t answer.

That should have told me everything.

But I still didn’t understand.

I’m fifty-eight now.

I married David twelve years ago.

At the time, I honestly thought love had passed me by.

Then David came along and called me his second chance.

At our small backyard wedding, he whispered it into my hair, and I believed him completely.

Chloe was seventeen.

Her mother had passed away several years earlier.

And from the beginning, I understood something important:

I was not there to replace her mother.

I never wanted that role.

I simply wanted a place of my own in Chloe’s life.

A chair at the table.

Nothing more.

But being a stepmother was never going to be simple.

At first, though, Chloe and I actually got along.

I cooked meals she liked.

Baked ziti.

That ridiculous boxed macaroni and cheese she loved.

I asked about school and friends without interrogating her.

I gave her room when she wanted it.

And when she wanted company, I was there.

Sometimes she laughed at my terrible jokes.

Once she even asked me how I made pie crust so flaky.

For a while, I thought we might be okay.

Then something changed.

Almost overnight, Chloe became distant.

At dinner, she barely spoke to me.

She avoided being alone in the same room.

One night, while David and I were doing dishes, I asked,

“Is Chloe all right? She barely looked at me tonight.”

David shrugged.

“She’s seventeen. School, boys, grief. Don’t take everything personally.”

“Did something happen?”

“I’ll talk to her.”

That became the pattern.

I noticed something.

I asked David.

He told me he would handle it.

Then he came back with some explanation that somehow made me feel guilty for asking.

A few months after our wedding, Chloe left for college.

Ten hours away.

Then she stopped coming home.

Not for Thanksgiving.

Not for Christmas.

Not even during summer break.

“She got a job on campus,” David told me.

“For the entire summer?”

“She probably needs the money, Al. Don’t guilt her.”

So I didn’t.

Year after year, I told myself I was respecting her boundaries.

Meanwhile, there were things I noticed but chose not to question.

David always checked the mail.

Every single day.

Rain or shine.

Even when he was sick.

Once, a Christmas card arrived from one of Chloe’s college roommates.

The envelope had already been opened.

David said the mail carrier must have damaged it.

I believed him.

Another time, shortly before Chloe left for college, I heard the two of them arguing loudly in the garage.

Chloe was crying.

I distinctly heard her say,

“That’s not fair.”

When I asked David about it, he told me they were arguing about her grades.

Later he said it had something to do with changing majors.

I should have noticed the story had changed.

I didn’t.

His phone often buzzed late at night.

Whenever it did, he turned the screen away.

“Spam,” he would say.

Or, “My brother.”

I never checked.

Love can make you trusting.

Guilt can make you even more so.

And I had plenty of both.

Now, twelve years later, I sat on the living room floor staring at a box from Chloe while my husband stood behind me looking terrified.

I slid my finger underneath the tape.

“Alice,” David said again. “Please.”

This time, I ignored him.

Thirteen of them.

When Chloe turned eighteen, I bought her a delicate gold necklace with a tiny star pendant.

She used to doodle stars in the corners of her notebooks.

I wrapped it myself.

Took it to the post office.

Two weeks later, the package came back.

I cried quietly in the laundry room so David wouldn’t hear me.

When Chloe turned twenty-one, I bought her a soft leather handbag.

I imagined her carrying it to her first serious job interview.

That came back too.

At twenty-five, I sent her a cookbook.

She used to love baking.

I remembered the cookies we once made together.

Banana bread.

A crooked birthday cake we attempted for David.

That package returned unopened as well.

Eventually, I tried calling.

The phone rang.

She never answered.

I asked David to please speak to her.

He told me he had.

“She doesn’t want you involved in her life,” he said one night.

I sat on the edge of our bed.

“Did I do something?”

“No, honey.”

“Then why does she hate me?”

“She’s still grieving her mother. She thinks I chose you over her.”

That explanation hurt.

But it made enough sense that I accepted it.

So I stopped asking questions.

I did not stop sending gifts.

A scarf.

A journal.

Earrings.

Something small every birthday.

Every year, they came back.

And every year, I placed the unopened package on the top shelf of the closet.

Maybe next year.

That became my private lie.

Then came birthday number thirteen.

I bought Chloe a silver picture frame.

I wrapped it in blue paper because blue had been her favorite color when she was seventeen.

As I sat on the bedroom floor holding it, something inside me finally gave up.

I realized I didn’t even know whether she still liked blue.

I barely knew anything about the woman she had become.

She was thirty years old now.

A stranger.

I whispered to myself,

“She’s been telling you for twelve years that she doesn’t want this. You need to listen.”

So I slowly unwrapped the frame.

I put it in the closet with all the other gifts that had come back.

For the first time, I sent nothing.

I didn’t tell David.

I simply went downstairs and made dinner.

Three days passed.

Oddly enough, I felt lighter.

Then the doorbell rang.

A delivery driver stood outside.

“Are you Alice?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve got a heavy package for you.”

He unloaded a huge cardboard box.

It took both him and David to bring it inside.

Then I saw the sender’s name.

Chloe.

I stopped breathing for a second.

Why would Chloe send me anything?

There was a note taped to the top.

I opened it.

Then I read it aloud.

“Maybe Dad will finally tell you why I left. It was never about you, Alice. Look inside and you’ll understand.”

Beside me, David became completely still.

“David,” I said slowly. “What does she mean?”

“She’s angry.”

“At what?”

“You know how Chloe is.”

I stared at him.

“No. I don’t know how she is. That’s the whole problem.”

Then he said something that made my stomach twist.

“Don’t open the box.”

I looked at his face.

All the color had drained from it.

“I’m opening it.”

He said nothing.

“You can help me or leave.”

Eventually, he helped.

I lifted the top flap.

Inside were twelve wrapped presents.

Each one had my name written on it in Chloe’s handwriting.

Underneath them were cards.

Twelve birthday cards.

One for every birthday I had celebrated during the years we had supposedly hated each other.

Every card was addressed simply to:

Alice.

I opened the first one.

Chloe thanked me for the lasagna I used to make on Sundays.

She mentioned the hug I gave her at the wedding.

She wrote:

“I hope you’re okay.”

I opened another.

She had written it when she was twenty-two.

She apologized for being distant when she first went away to college.

Then she asked whether maybe the two of us could talk.

I had never received it.

None of them.

Every single card had been returned.

At the bottom of the box was a bundle of letters secured with a rubber band.

College addresses.

Denver.

Portland.

Different years.

Different homes.

All written to me.

All stamped:

RETURN TO SENDER.

Then I noticed something.

The handwriting on the return markings.

I knew it.

I had looked at it on grocery lists and birthday cards for twelve years.

It was David’s.

I held up one of the envelopes.

My hands had stopped shaking.

I was beyond shaking.

“You returned these.”

David lowered himself onto the couch.

“Alice…”

“You sent them back.”

He didn’t answer.

“This is my name. Our address. Chloe wrote to me, and you sent everything back.”

“Alice, listen—”

“Say it.”

He looked at the floor.

Finally, he whispered,

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing you.”

I stared at him.

“And losing her.”

“David.”

His voice cracked.

“I thought the two of you would become closer to each other than either of you were to me.”

The room went silent.

I couldn’t even process what he had just admitted.

“You told me she hated me.”

“I know.”

“You told me she said she couldn’t stand having me in this house.”

“I know.”

“You said you two had some huge argument.”

David looked away.

“There wasn’t really an argument like that.”

My stomach turned.

“What did you do?”

He covered his face for a moment.

Then finally said it.

“I told Chloe that you found her exhausting.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“I told her you wanted the house to yourselves.”

My voice dropped.

“You told a seventeen-year-old girl who had already lost her mother that her father’s new wife didn’t want her around?”

“I panicked.”

“She was a child.”

“I know.”

“And then you told me she hated me.”

“I thought it would blow over.”

“How?”

“I thought eventually I’d fix it.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Instead, every year you sent her letters back.”

David said nothing.

“And you sent my gifts back too, didn’t you?”

His silence answered.

I sat down on the rug beside the box.

Thirteen years.

Thirteen birthdays.

Thirteen years of believing I had failed a girl I loved.

“Why now?” I asked.

David finally looked at me.

“Chloe called me last week.”

“Why?”

He hesitated.

Then he explained.

A few weeks earlier, I had run into our neighbor Margaret at the grocery store.

She had asked about Chloe.

Without thinking, I called her “my girl.”

Margaret’s daughter Maya happened to be friends with Chloe.

Somehow the comment reached her.

And Maya told Chloe something else.
