From what Mom had heard, the sisters had fallen out after their mother died.
“I saw Elaine last night,” Mom said. “She came to the party.”

“I think we should ask.”
Mom picked up her phone.
“What are you doing?”

She still had Elaine’s number from years ago.
Elaine answered after several rings.
Mom exchanged a few polite words with her before getting straight to the point.

I couldn’t hear her reply but Mom’s expression changed.
“Yes,” she said. “I have it here.”

When Mom finally hung up, she looked stunned.
“What did she say?”

“It belonged to their mother.”

Before she died, she had promised it to Elaine.

Everyone in the family knew that it would eventually be Elaine’s.

That was when Patricia finally explained the party.
She had worn the bracelet that night.
After so many years, she had stopped worrying about Elaine ever seeing it.

“I do.”
“No. You wanted me to forget what you did without you ever having to admit it.”
“That happened years ago.”
Elaine’s expression hardened.
“No. Taking it happened years ago. Wearing it last night happened yesterday. Lying to me continued until five minutes ago.”
Patricia had no answer.
Then Mom said, “And apparently she hasn’t changed.”
Patricia frowned. “What does that mean?”
“Why didn’t you pay me?”
Patricia immediately knew what Mom meant.
Elaine was confused, but Mom explained what had happened.

“It was a cleaning disagreement.”
“There was no disagreement. You offered me $300. I agreed. I worked until almost two in the morning. Then you decided you didn’t want to pay.”
Patricia sighed as though Mom were inconveniencing her.

“You chose the amount,” I said.
Patricia looked at me sharply.
Elaine shook her head. “This is exactly what you’ve always done.”
“Oh, please.”
“You just do whatever pleases you. You don’t care about others.”
“You’re being dramatic.”
“Am I? Mom wanted me to have the bracelet, but you decided you deserved it more. You promised this woman $300, but after she did the work, you decided she didn’t deserve it.”

Nothing Patricia said after that mattered much. We left.
Outside, Elaine stopped beside her car and stared at the bracelet.
“I thought I’d never see this again.”
She hugged Mom.
“If you hadn’t found it, I never would have known.”
Mom smiled. “And if you hadn’t come with me, I might never have gotten paid.”
Elaine laughed softly.
For the first time all day, the tension eased.
On the drive home, Mom placed the $300 in the cup holder between us.
I looked at it.
“That was a lot of trouble for $300.”
Mom shook her head.
“It wasn’t about $300.”
I understood what she meant.
Elaine hadn’t gotten anything extra.
Neither had Mom.

Mom was polite if she saw her outside, but that was all.
Elaine stopped visiting too.
Whatever relationship the sisters had started rebuilding collapsed.
Elaine learned that Patricia’s apology for the past had never included telling the truth about it.
Sometimes I still think about Patricia’s birthday party.
Ten thousand dollars on flowers, food, music, and decorations.
All that effort to make everyone see how successful and generous she was.
Yet by the next afternoon, the flowers were already wilting.
The guests were gone.
And the thing Mom and I remembered wasn’t the expensive party.
It was the $300 she refused to pay and the bracelet she had hidden underneath the table.
In the end, Patricia lost far more than either of those things were worth.
Not because anyone took anything from her.
