Part 2: Leon
I couldn’t move. I just stood in the doorway staring at the old man.
He tried to stand. His legs shook. Logan caught his arm and helped him back into the chair.
The old man said, quietly, Hello, Emma.
My name is Leon.
My mother started crying. Logan came over and took my hand.
He said, I’m sorry. I was going to tell you. Tonight. I promise.
He told me everything.
Last Christmas, he gave me a DNA test kit as a gift. For fun. To find out my ancestry.
Six weeks ago, the website sent him a notification on our shared account. A close match. Parent-child.
A man named Leon Walsh. Seventy-four. From a town two hundred miles away.
Logan didn’t tell me. He called my mother first.
He said, I thought it was a mistake. I thought she’d explain it.
My mother told him the truth.
She was twenty-two. Leon was twenty-six. They were in love. But Leon drank. A lot.
When she found out she was pregnant, she left. She moved three hours away. She changed her phone number.
She never told him about me.
And she told me my father was gone.
Logan said, Then Leon reached out to me. Through the website. He’d seen the match too.
He said he’d been sober for thirty-one years. He said he was sick. Lung disease. The doctors gave him a year.
He said he only wanted to meet his daughter. Once.
Logan said, Your mom begged me to keep it quiet. She said she’d handle it.
He said, I didn’t know she was going to offer him money to go away.
I looked at my mother. She couldn’t look at me.
Leon spoke again. His voice was raspy.
He said, I didn’t know about you. Not for forty years. If I had known, I would have gotten sober a lot sooner.
I left the motel without saying a word.
That night, my mother called. Again and again. Finally, I answered.
She was crying. She said, I did it to protect you. He was a drunk. He would have hurt you.
She said, You don’t know him. He’s a stranger. Don’t let him come in now at the end and take everything.
She said, I’m your mother. I raised you alone. That has to count for something.
I kept my voice calm.
Mom, it counts for everything. But you lied to me for forty years.
She said I didn’t understand what she went through.
Then tell me, I said quietly. Tell me the truth. All of it.
She was silent.
Then she said, He wrote me letters, Emma. After I left. For years.
I never opened them. I still have them. In a box in my closet.
Part 3: Forty Years
I sat on my back porch that night and let myself count.
Forty years.
Forty birthdays without a father. Forty Father’s Days I spent making cards for my mother instead.
When I was seven, I asked her what my father was like. She said he was kind. He liked fishing. He died before I was born.
I believed her. I told my friends my father was in heaven.
When I was twelve, Noah’s age, I asked to see a picture of him. She said they were all lost in a move.
I believed that too.
When I got married, my mother walked me down the aisle. I cried. I wished my father could have been there.
He could have been.
He was two hundred miles away. Sober. Wondering what had happened to the girl he loved.
Then I counted Leon.
Thirty-one years sober. Logan said he runs an AA meeting every Tuesday night. He’s sponsored forty-two people.
Seventy-four years old. Lung disease. A year to live. Maybe less.
He drove two hundred miles with an oxygen tank to meet a daughter he didn’t know existed.
And my mother offered him money to leave.
Then I counted my mother.
Twenty-two years old. Pregnant. Alone. With a boyfriend who drank.
She left to protect me. I believe that part. She was brave.
But then she kept lying. For forty years. Even after he got sober. Even after he wrote her letters.
The next morning, my mother’s car pulled into my driveway.
She was holding a shoebox.
Part 4: My Mother
My mother stood on my porch. She looked like she hadn’t slept.
She held out the shoebox. Inside were dozens of envelopes. Old. Yellowed. All unopened.
She said, These are his letters. I’m giving them to you.
Then she started talking.
She said she knew I was angry. She said she understood.
But she said I needed to be careful. She said men like Leon don’t change. She said sobriety doesn’t erase what he did.
She said, He threw a glass at the wall once. Right beside my head. I was four months pregnant with you.
She said, You don’t know him. I do.
Then her voice softened.
She said, He’s sick. He’s dying. He’s scared. People like that say whatever they need to say.
She said, You’ll get attached. Then he’ll be gone. And you’ll grieve a man who was never really your father.
Then she said the thing she came to say.
Please. Let him go. For both our sakes. I can’t lose you to him.
I felt that one land. It was meant to.
Because I could see how scared she was. Forty years of scared.
I took a slow breath.
Mom, I said quietly, I believe you about the glass.
She looked at me.
I’m glad you left, I said. You protected me. That was brave.
But he’s been sober for thirty-one years. He’s helped forty-two people get sober. He wrote you letters for years.
And you kept every one of them. Without opening them. Without telling me.
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
I’m not choosing him over you, I said gently. You’re my mother. That will never change.
But I’m going to meet my father. I’m going to read his letters.
And I’d like you to come with me. If you can.
My mother stood on my porch for a long time.
Then she opened the shoebox. She took out the very first envelope. The oldest one.
She looked at it for a long time.
Then she whispered, I’m afraid to know what he wrote.
Part 5: The Letters
My mother and I sat on my porch swing. I opened the first letter.
It was dated forty-one years ago. The month after she left.
Irene, I’m sorry. I know why you left. I’d have left me too.
I went to my first meeting last night. I’m going to stop. I don’t know if I can. But I’m going to try.
Please let me know you’re safe. That’s all I ask.
My mother put her hand over her mouth.
I opened the next one. Then the next.
He wrote her every month for six years. He never knew about me. He only wrote to ask if she was safe. If she was happy.
The last letter was thirty-four years ago.
Irene, I’ve been sober for three years now. I finally believe I’ll stay that way.
I won’t write again. I don’t want to be a burden. But if you ever need anything, anything at all, I’m here.
I hope you have a good life. I hope someone loves you the way you deserve.
My mother cried on my porch swing for an hour.
Then she said, quietly, Can you drive me to him?
We drove to the motel together that afternoon. Logan stayed home with Noah.
Leon was sitting in the same chair by the window. When he saw my mother in the doorway, he started to cry.
She sat down across from him. She said, I’m sorry, Leon. I should have told you. Years ago.
He said, I’m sorry too. For the glass. For all of it.
They talked for two hours. I sat on the bed and listened.
Leon lived for eleven more months.
He moved into an apartment ten minutes from my house. I saw him every day.
He taught Noah to fish. He told me stories about my grandparents. He came to Thanksgiving. My mother sat beside him.
On Father’s Day, I gave him a card. The first one I’d ever given to a father.
He read it three times. Then he folded it and put it in his shirt pocket.
He was still wearing that shirt when he passed. My mother found the card in the pocket.
At his funeral, forty-two people came from his AA meetings. One by one, they stood up and said he saved their lives.
My mother sat beside me in the front row. She held my hand the whole time.
Afterward, she said, quietly, He became the man I hoped he’d be.
I just wasn’t brave enough to find out.
I put my arm around her.
I said, You were brave, Mom. When it mattered most.
So was he.
