Part 1 — The Dress
My mother was diagnosed when I was fifteen.
She was a seamstress in the specific way of someone who has done it long enough that the skill becomes part of how she thought — she saw fabric in terms of what it could become.
She decided to make me a prom dress.
Not because prom was imminent. I was fifteen. Prom was three years away.
She made it because she was running out of time and she wanted to make something that would still be there when she wasn’t.
She chose the design carefully.
A deep blue that she said matched my eyes exactly.
Beading on the bodice that she placed by hand, one small bead at a time, during the hours when she had enough energy to sit up and work.
She died before she could finish it.
Her seamstress friend Helen knew the project.
My mother had left detailed notes.
Helen finished it from those notes over the following month.
She brought it to me without ceremony.
She just said: your mother wanted you to have this.
I put it in the back of my closet in a garment bag.
I wasn’t ready.
I waited two years.
When prom came around I knew.
My stepmother Diane had been in our house for three years.
She had asked once to see the dress.
I had shown her because refusing seemed unkind.
She had admired the beading.
She had asked where my mother got the fabric.
I had told her.
On prom night I came downstairs in my mother’s dress.
Diane was in the living room.
She was wearing a version of it.
Not identical.
Close enough to be unmistakable.
The silhouette. The color. The placement of the decorative elements at the bodice.
She smiled.
She said: what a coincidence. We have similar taste.
My father looked at the floor.
Part 2 — Marcus
My date Marcus had been my friend since seventh grade.
He knocked on the door thirty seconds after I came downstairs.
He came in wearing his tuxedo with the specific ease of someone who is comfortable in formal clothes because he treats them like any other clothes.
He looked at me.
He looked at Diane.
He looked at me again.
He said three things.
The first thing he said was to me.
He said: you look exactly like your mom described.
He said it simply. Not dramatically. As a statement of fact.
I had told him once about the dress and why it existed.
He had remembered.
The second thing he said was to my father.
He said: Mr. Calloway. That’s a remarkable dress your wife is wearing. When did she have it made?
My father looked at Marcus.
He said: I — Diane?
Diane said: I found a lovely dressmaker—
Marcus said: I ask because Claire’s mother made Claire’s dress by hand. Before she passed away. Claire has been saving it for two years.
He said it clearly.
In front of my father.
In front of Diane.
With complete calm and zero performance.
The third thing he said was to Diane.
He said: I’m sure your dressmaker did lovely work.
Then he offered me his arm and said: ready?
I took his arm.
We walked out.
Part 3 — The Party
Marcus did not mention the dress again for the rest of the evening.
He was my friend and he understood that prom was supposed to be prom and not just the night the dress incident happened.
He danced badly and enthusiastically.
He ate two full plates at the dinner and was not embarrassed about it.
He introduced me to his cousins who were at a different table and who were genuinely interested in the beading on my dress and asked if I had made it.
I said: my mother made it.
They said: it’s beautiful.
I said: yes. She was.
Near the end of the evening we were standing at the edge of the dance floor and Marcus said: you okay?
I said: yes.
He said: she should see you right now.
I said: I think she does.
He said: yes. Probably.
He said: your dress is the better dress, by the way. Objectively.
I said: obviously.
He said: I just wanted to say it out loud.
Part 4 — My Father
My father called the next morning.
He said: Claire. I owe you an apology.
I said: yes.
He said: I saw what Diane was wearing and I should have said something before you came downstairs.
I said: you knew?
He was quiet for a moment.
He said: I saw it when she got dressed. I told myself it wasn’t what I thought it was.
I said: it was exactly what you thought it was.
He said: I know.
He said: Marcus said something to me after you left.
I said: what did he say?
He said: he said your mother worked on that dress during her last good weeks. He said she chose every bead by hand.
He said: I knew that. I watched her do it.
He said: and I stood in the living room.
He said: Claire.
I said: yes.
He said: I’m sorry.
I said: I know you are.
He said: I need to talk to Diane.
I said: yes.
He said: I should have done this a long time ago.
I said: yes.
He said: she has been — there have been other things I’ve let go.
I said: I know.
He said: no more.
He said it simply.
The way people say things when they have finally made a decision that should have come earlier.
I said: okay, Dad.
He said: your mother would have—
I said: Dad.
He said: yes.
I said: I know what she would have done. She would have finished her coffee and then handled it.
He said: yes. That’s right.
He said: I love you.
I said: I love you too.
He said: you looked beautiful last night.
I said: I know. She made sure I would.
Part 5 — Helen
I called Helen the following week.
She was in her seventies and still sewed and still thought about my mother regularly.
I told her about prom.
I told her about the dress Diane had worn.
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said: your mother would have had something very specific to say about that.
I said: yes. Probably not repeatable.
Helen laughed.
She said: she was very specific when she was angry.
I said: yes.
She said: Claire. Tell me how you looked.
I described it.
The blue and the beading and the way Marcus had said I looked exactly like my mom described.
Helen said: she talked about that dress all the time. Every bead she placed she’d say now Claire will wear this and I’ll know it’s there.
She said: did you feel it? While you were wearing it?
I said: yes.
She said: good.
She said: she put herself into that dress. You were carrying her with you all night.
I said: I know.
I said: even with the other dress.
Helen said: especially with the other dress.
She said: your mother would have said that imitation is the most obvious form of inadequacy.
I said: that sounds exactly right.
Helen said: it is exactly right. She said it often.
She said: Claire.
I said: yes.
She said: wear it again sometime. Not just for special occasions.
She said: your mother didn’t make it for special occasions. She made it so you’d have something of hers.
She said: that doesn’t require an occasion.
I said: yes.
I said: you’re right.
I said: I’ll wear it to dinner sometime.
Helen said: perfect.
She said: put a sweater over it if you need to.
She said: but wear it.
Some mothers use their last good weeks to place beads by hand.
Some friends walk through doors and say three things in exactly the right order.
Some fathers make phone calls the morning after.
And some dresses don’t need occasions.
Wear it to dinner.
Put a sweater over it if you need to.
She put herself into every bead.
You’ve been carrying her all along.
