I watch them from the patio, taking a deep breath of the warm summer air. I know exactly where David is right now. He is currently sitting in a six-by-eight concrete cell in a maximum-security federal penitentiary downstate. Because of his high-profile crimes against children, he is kept in protective solitary confinement. He is allowed exactly one hour of sunlight a day.
He had tried to bury my children in the dark to secure a life of luxury. But in doing so, he had only buried himself. He is rotting away in the very darkness he once forced upon his own flesh and blood.
I smile, setting down my coffee mug on the patio table. I realize, looking at my laughing children, that I am no longer just a survivor of a narcissistic nightmare. I am the architect of our peace. I am the fortress that keeps my family safe. The exhausted, accommodating co-parent died in that pitch-black apartment, and a relentless mother took her place.
“Mom! Liam is eating dirt again!” Mia yells, giggling as she drops the hose.
“I’m coming!” I call back, laughing.
As the children play, I turn and walk back inside through the sliding glass door to grab a towel. I pause by the hallway mirror in the foyer. I look at the reflection staring back at me. I see a strong, vibrant, at-peace woman. The dark circles under my eyes have faded.
But just behind my reflection, sitting on the silver tray on the entryway table, is the morning mail.
Resting right on top of the pile is a heavy, manila envelope. It has a thick, red wax seal on the back, an archaic touch that seems incredibly out of place. I turn around and pick it up, my thumb tracing the embossed wax.
I look at the return address stamped in the top left corner.
It is from the federal penitentiary.
My heart skips a singular, heavy beat. I flip the envelope over to read the recipient’s name, expecting another legal notice or a pathetic plea for forgiveness addressed to me.
But it isn’t addressed to Sarah Miller.
Written in precise, chillingly familiar handwriting, the envelope is addressed to ten-year-old Mia.
