On my 30th birthday, I found a jewelry box in my boyfriend’s pocket and thought nine years of waiting were finally over. Instead, he told me I wasn’t “wife material.” The next day, he came home to find me looking like he’d never seen me before.
Simon’s parents threw me a thirtieth birthday dinner at their place, since my family lived across the country. Halfway through, I slipped into the hallway for my lip balm and knocked Simon’s jacket off its hook.
Something small and hard hit the floor.

“So when is he going to propose?” my friends kept asking.
“It’ll happen when it happens,” I always said.

I almost opened it. But I pictured Simon down on one knee, and I didn’t want to ruin it for him. So I slid the box back into his pocket, fixed my face, and went back to the table.
“Why are you smiling like that?” Simon asked.
“Like what?”

His father looked between us. “Oh, God. Are we finally doing this?”

His father raised his glass. “At this rate, you two are going to beat your mother and me for the longest engagement without actually being engaged.”
Everyone laughed. I looked at Simon. Here we go.
Instead, he leaned back in his chair. “Why would I rush into marriage when I’ve already got everything I need?”
“Oh, God. Are we finally doing this?”
“Wrong answer, son,” his father groaned.
“One day she’s going to get tired of waiting,” his mother added.
Simon put his arm around me. “She isn’t going anywhere.”
That should have bothered me. But I knew about the box, so I figured he was just playing it cool.
After the cake, Simon reached into his jacket. “Actually, I have one more thing.”
He set the velvet box in front of me. My hands shook as I opened it.
“She isn’t going anywhere.”
Earrings. Tiny silver flowers with pale pink stones.
“Well?” he said.
“They’re… earrings.”
His father suddenly became very interested in his wine. Simon laughed. “That’s generally what goes in an earring box.”
I forced a smile. “They’re cute.”

“I knew you’d like them.”
I hated pink jewelry. After nine years, apparently he didn’t know that either.

On the drive home, Simon talked about traffic. I stared out the window. The moment we walked into our apartment, Pepper came running, and I knelt to scratch her ears, mostly so I wouldn’t have to look at him.
“Simon, do you ever plan to marry me?”
“One day she’s going to get tired of waiting.”
He stopped halfway through taking off his shoes. “What?”
“You heard me.”
“Where is this coming from?”
“Nine years, probably.”
He sighed. “Why does a piece of paper suddenly matter so much?”
“It doesn’t. I just want to know if you actually see me as your wife.”
“Simon, do you ever plan to marry me?”
“Of course I do.”
“Then why haven’t you asked?”
“You really want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t cook like you used to.”
I stared at him. “I asked why you haven’t proposed.”
“Why does a piece of paper suddenly matter so much?”
“And I’m explaining.” He lowered his voice, as if that made it kinder. “You complain all the time. The apartment’s a mess when I get home. Half the time I ask what’s for dinner and you tell me to make something myself.”
“Because you have hands.”
“See? That’s exactly what I mean. You don’t make my life easier anymore.”
I laughed in disbelief. “So that’s what a wife is?”
“You don’t make my life easier anymore.”
“Don’t twist my words.”
He rubbed his forehead, then looked straight at me.
“I’ll put a ring on your finger when you start acting like wife material.”
The man I’d spent my entire adult life with had just told me I was still auditioning, and I was standing there in my birthday dress with a dog licking my hand. Normally, I would have argued.
But instead, I was going to do something completely different.

I don’t know why. Maybe nine years of habit doesn’t switch off overnight. Maybe I thought that if I just tried harder, last night would turn out to be a bad dream.
So I scrubbed the bathroom, washed his gym clothes, and put his favorite lasagna in the oven. Every time I opened the oven door, I wanted to cry.
Maybe he was right. Maybe I had let things slip.

Around noon, I went to put his spare keys in the desk drawer and found a folded sheet of paper under some receipts. At the top, in Simon’s handwriting: Marriage?

I took a picture of the page. Then my hand went to the closet on its own, and I pulled out a suitcase and started throwing sweaters into it. I was still at it when my phone rang. Simon’s mother.
“Sweetheart! Happy birthday again. Simon sounded odd this morning. Did you two have words?”
“A few.”

She sighed. “He loves you, you know. He’s just an idiot sometimes.”
“I’ve noticed.”
“Oh, and we completely forgot to give you our real present last night! We were running around like headless chickens. Check your email, it’s for both of you. Have fun, darling.”
Two plane tickets. Las Vegas. Hotel included. Leaving at seven that evening.
I looked at the tickets, then at the half-packed suitcase, then at the report card. Slowly, I took the clothes back out and made one call.
“He loves you, you know. He’s just an idiot sometimes.”
“Birthday girl!”
“Change of plans. We’re flying to Vegas.”
A pause. “We are?”
“Tonight. Wear a suit.”
“Should I be worried?”
“Probably.”
“Have fun, darling.”

Simon came home at five, earlier than usual. He stopped dead in the living room doorway, and his keys hit the floor.
“What the hell?”
“Hi.”
His eyes went from my face to the suitcase by the door and back again. I was in a simple fitted white dress, hair done, makeup perfect. Nothing princess-like. But there was no mistaking what it was.
“Change of plans. We’re flying to Vegas.”
“I’m not marrying you just because you got some idea in your head,” he said.
I almost laughed. “Who said I’m marrying you?”
“What?”
“I’m going to Vegas. I’ll decide there.”
“Vegas? What’s gotten into you?”
“Who said I’m marrying you?”
I held out the folded paper. He read the first line and went pale.
“You went through my stuff?”
“I was putting your keys away.”
“That’s private.”
“In bed, six out of ten?”
“Jesus.”
“Vegas? What’s gotten into you?”
“Cleaning, nine. At least I excel somewhere.”
“Can we please talk about this?”
“We did. Last night.”
I picked up the suitcase. He stepped in front of the door.
“Where are you going?”
“Vegas. I told you so.”
“With who?”
“It’ll happen when it happens.”
“Someone who actually shows up when I ask him to.”
“Who?”
“You spent nine years deciding if I was good enough to marry you. Tonight I’m deciding whether you’re good enough to marry me. You have until then to figure out what you did wrong.”
“I know what I did wrong. I should’ve proposed.”

“Wrong answer.”
“Then what’s the right one?”
“I don’t want you to marry me because you’re scared I’ll leave. Figure it out.”
“And if I don’t? You’re going to marry some random guy?”
“Maybe.”
He stared at the dress. Then at me.
“You… you can’t do this to me.”

“Funny. You had nine years to decide what you could do to me.” I opened the door. “Dinner’s in the oven.”
Back then, I didn’t even believe that this desperate step would truly bring me closer to personal happiness.

He sat down. Dark hair, warm eyes, a few years older than me. Then he noticed the white fabric under my coat.
“You… you can’t do this to me.”

I laughed. “Haven’t decided yet.”
“That’s mildly terrifying.”
“It’s been a weird birthday.”
“I’m Ethan.”
I told him my name. The flight was delayed, so we talked over terrible airport coffee. Vegas, work, nothing important. Then my phone buzzed.

I turned it facedown. Ethan glanced at it. “Groom?”
His eyebrows went up. “I feel like there are several chapters missing.”
“You have no idea.”
When boarding was announced, he stood. “Well, mystery bride, good luck. If Vegas doesn’t work out… can I get your number?”
“Groom?”
For a second, I considered it.
“Sorry. But you already know I have someone.”
He glanced at the dress. “Lucky guy.”
I didn’t answer, and he didn’t push. He just nodded and walked toward the gate.
A minute later, a voice behind me said, “Please tell me you didn’t wear that through security.”
I turned. He looked the way he always did in a suit: too handsome and a little smug, with a coffee cup in each hand.

“You came.”
“You told me to wear a suit and get on a plane. Obviously I came.” He handed me a cup. Extra shot, no sugar.
“You remembered.”
“Of course I remembered. You look insane, by the way.”

I knew that voice before I turned around. Simon looked wrecked: wrinkled shirt, messy hair, no jacket. He wasn’t looking at me. He was staring at the man beside me.

His fist was already moving.

Simon opened his mouth, then closed it.
“I’m going to get some ice,” Ryan muttered, and walked off.
“I screwed up,” Simon said, his voice cracking.
“You punched my cousin.”
“Not just that. The list.” He swallowed. “It was disgusting. I thought I was making sure marriage was the right decision.”

“For who?”
He went quiet. “For me. I spent years asking whether you were doing enough for me. I never asked whether I was someone you’d want as a husband.”
My eyes filled. That was exactly what I’d wanted him to understand.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring box. Then he dropped to one knee, right there in the bar.

I had imagined this moment hundreds of times. Never once in a wedding dress I’d bought out of anger.
“You don’t have to prove anything to me,” he said. “You never did. I love you. I should’ve asked you years ago.” The ring was beautiful. “Marry me.”
For one terrible second, every part of me wanted to say yes.
Then I saw myself in the mirror behind the bar. Mascara running. Dress crumpled from the flight. Ryan twenty feet away, holding ice to his lip. Yesterday I hadn’t been wife material.
“Marry me.”
That morning I’d been a 7.2. And the moment Simon thought someone else might want me, suddenly I was enough.
I had dreamed about this moment for years. I just never imagined I’d have to destroy myself to get him here.
“No.”
“What?”
“No.”
“But you wanted this.”
“I did.”

“I thought I needed you to realize I was wife material.” I looked at the ring one last time. “Turns out I needed to realize you weren’t husband material.”
“I flew all the way here. I figured it out.”
“I know. You figured it out nine years too late.”

I looked at the wedding dress hanging over the chair. For the first time in nine years, the choice was mine.
