“Come on, son,” he said, holding out the keys to a brand-new black car. Then he glanced at my stepfather. “He could never give you something like this.”
He expected me to be impressed.
Instead, I walked back into the house and returned carrying a handmade wooden box.
That was when his smile began to disappear.
I hadn’t seen my biological father since I was three.
Growing up, it was mostly Mom and me. Money was always tight, even when we tried not to talk about it.
I learned to notice the signs.

“Why?”

“Because you were here.”
That was who Ray was.

He just kept being there.

The following statement read:

I looked at him.
“You were keeping track of this?”

At the bottom of the box was a handwritten note.

For once, he had no joke.
He looked down at the sink for a moment.
