I stood in the doorway.
The morning was doing what mornings did on the water, the light coming off it sideways in a way that made everything slightly clearer than it needed to be.
I went and sat on the dock.
The lake was doing what it always did.

The water slapped against the pilings in the soft way it always slapped.
I thought about twelve years.

I put my feet in the water.
It was cold.

The house was behind me.

This specific morning was mine.
I sat there until I was ready.
