Outside on the grand marble steps of the courthouse, the crisp spring air felt fresh and clean. Evelyn turned to Terrence, her eyes filled with tears of relief as she gave him a long, grateful hug.
Terrence crouched down on one knee to address Charlotte and Delilah directly. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out two polished silver toy police badges, pinning one carefully onto each girl’s coat.
“These are special junior officer badges,” Terrence said with a warm smile. “Awarded for official bravery in the line of duty.”
Delilah giggled happily, tapping the shiny metal star with her small finger. Charlotte stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Terrence’s neck, hugging him tightly.
“Thank you for listening to me when we walked into your station,” Charlotte whispered close to his ear.
Terrence held the brave little girl for a moment, feeling a deep sense of peace wash over him. “I will always listen to you,” Terrence promised softly. “Whenever you or anyone else needs help, there will always be someone ready to listen.”
