A card attached to the ribbon read:

“Every new officer.”

Thomas gestured toward the map.

“I could explain the shore excursions for you. But Martin wanted you to find the places yourself.”

Then he departed, leaving me alone with fifty destinations and no husband.

I spread the map across the bed.

The first marked location was a waterfront café at our next port. I recognized it before reading the label.

Martin had sent me a postcard featuring that café while we were dating. I still kept it in a shoebox at home.

My first instinct was to remain aboard.

Elena’s stall was beside the harbor, surrounded by painted ceramics and colorful scarves.

“One day he showed me a photograph,” Elena said. “Your wedding. He said you were planning a  cruise together, and if you ever came to my stall, would I hold something for you?” She shrugged. “I said yes. What else do you say to a man like that?”

She disappeared briefly and returned carrying an envelope.

My head was tilted back in laughter, with Martin’s hand resting against my back.

“Your husband was kind to me when I needed it most,” he said. “I never got to tell him how much that meant. Would you let me have this dance?”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Then I nodded and accepted his hand.

We danced slowly beneath the warm amber lights while passengers around us laughed, spun, and enjoyed their desserts.

Afterward, I thanked both men and returned to my cabin, my heart aching but somehow more open than before.

I spread the map across the bed again.

The two marked destinations no longer belonged solely to Martin’s memories.

I’d eaten at his favorite café, met Elena, and held our wedding photograph in my hands.
