“Why would he leave?”

The doctor lowered his eyes.

“Your husband told me that he wasn’t sure the twins were biologically his.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

I actually laughed because the sentence was so absurd that my mind refused to understand it.

“What?”

“He said he had received some information before the delivery. He was extremely upset. He asked me whether there was any possibility that the biological father could be someone else.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible. We have been married for twelve years. I have never been with another man. Andrew knows that!”

The doctor raised his hand gently.

“I understand. But there’s something else you should know.”

He reached into the folder he had brought with him and pulled out a document.

“Your husband showed me a message. He said someone had contacted him and claimed that your fertility treatment involved a mistake. According to that message, the embryos used during your treatment might not have been yours and his.”

My hands began trembling.

A mistake?

An embryo mix-up?

I looked at my beautiful daughters sleeping peacefully beside me.

For ten years, I had dreamed of holding them.

And now, just hours after meeting them, I was being told that the man who had promised to love them had walked away because of a message.

“Did he say who sent it?” I whispered.

The doctor nodded.

“He showed me the name.”

I leaned forward.

“Who?”

The doctor hesitated before answering.

“Your fertility clinic. Someone claiming to be a former employee.”

I felt the room spinning.

“Can you contact Andrew? Please. I need to speak to my husband.”

The doctor took out his phone and tried calling him.

No answer.

Then I tried again.

Nothing.

Finally, I received a message.

It was from Andrew.

Three sentences.

I’m sorry. I can’t look at you right now.

I need time to understand what happened.

Please don’t contact me until I know the truth.

I read those words again and again.

Then I looked at my daughters.

One had her tiny fingers wrapped around the blanket. The other was sleeping with her little mouth slightly open.

They were perfect.

They were innocent.

And suddenly I realized that whatever had happened between Andrew and me, those two little girls deserved a father who would never make them feel unwanted.

I kissed their foreheads.

“Don’t worry, my loves,” I whispered. “Mommy is here. I’m not going anywhere.”

But deep inside, I was terrified.

Because I knew Andrew.

And if he had believed that message so easily, there was probably something else he hadn’t told me.

Something much bigger.

The following morning, a nurse came into my room carrying a small envelope.

“Someone left this for you last night,” she said.

“Who?”

“I don’t know. A man at the reception asked us to give it to you personally.”

My fingers went cold as I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Andrew standing outside the fertility clinic three weeks before my delivery.

Beside him was a woman I recognized immediately.

It was Sarah.

My closest friend.

The woman who had accompanied me to countless appointments when Andrew couldn’t take time off work.

And on the back of the photograph, someone had written:

“Before you blame your husband, ask your best friend what she did ten years ago.”

I stared at the photograph.

Then I began to cry.

Because Sarah had been the person I trusted most in the world.

And I suddenly wondered whether the person who had helped me through ten years of heartbreak had been hiding the reason behind it all along.

PART 3 – THE TRUTH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw that photograph.

Andrew and Sarah.

Standing together outside the clinic.

Why hadn’t he told me?

Why had Sarah been there?

And what had happened ten years ago?

The next morning, I asked my sister to bring Sarah to the hospital.

I didn’t tell her why.

I simply said I needed to see her.

When Sarah entered my room, she was carrying a bouquet of pink roses and a teddy bear for the babies.

“Oh my goodness! Look at these little angels!” she exclaimed.

She walked toward the bassinets, smiling.

But when she looked at me, her smile slowly disappeared.

“What’s wrong?”

I picked up the photograph from my bedside table and placed it in front of her.

“Tell me the truth.”

Sarah looked at it.

Her face turned completely white.

For several seconds, she didn’t say anything.

Then she sat down.

“Oh, God,” she whispered.

“How long?” I asked.

She covered her mouth.

“How long have you been hiding something from me?”

Tears began running down her cheeks.

“Please, let me explain.”

“Explain what? Why were you with my husband at the fertility clinic?”

She looked at my daughters.

Then she looked back at me.

“Ten years ago, when you and Andrew first started trying to have a baby, I was working at the same hospital network as the fertility clinic. I knew how desperate you both were. I knew how much you wanted a family.”

I swallowed hard.

“Get to the point, Sarah.”

She took a shaky breath.

“During one of your earliest treatments, there was an administrative error. Two patient files were mixed up. The clinic discovered it, but the situation was handled very badly. Your treatment was postponed, and nobody properly explained what had happened.”

I stared at her.

“How do you know that?”

“Because I saw the paperwork.”

My heart began pounding.

“What paperwork?”

Sarah started crying harder.

“Your husband came to me three weeks ago. Someone had sent him an anonymous message claiming that the clinic had used the wrong embryos. He was terrified. He thought he had been lied to for years.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“And you knew?”

“I suspected something, but I didn’t know the truth. Andrew asked me to help him find out what had happened.”

“Why didn’t either of you tell me?”

Sarah lowered her head.

“Because we were afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Afraid that the investigation would reveal something that would destroy your happiness.”

I looked at her for a long time.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Are my daughters biologically mine?”

Sarah began sobbing.

“I don’t know. But the clinic has records. And there’s something else.”

She reached into her handbag and took out a folded piece of paper.

“Andrew asked me to give you this if he couldn’t find the courage to come back.”

I unfolded it.

It was a handwritten letter.

If you’re reading this, it means I still haven’t found the strength to look you in the eyes.

I need you to know something.

I never stopped loving you.

When I received that message, I was angry, frightened, and confused. I spent ten years believing that becoming a father was the one thing that would finally make our family complete.

And when someone told me that everything might have been based on a terrible mistake, I felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath my feet.

But I made a terrible mistake myself.

I left you alone in a hospital bed.

I left you to welcome our daughters without me.

I have no excuse for that.

I went to the clinic this morning. I spoke to the director, and I requested an official investigation.

The clinic has confirmed that there was a serious record-keeping error, but they have not established whether any embryos were actually mixed up.

I don’t know what the final results will say.

But I know this:

Those little girls have done absolutely nothing wrong.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For the first time since waking up after surgery, I felt something other than fear.

A week later, the clinic contacted us.

Andrew arrived before me.

He looked exhausted.

His eyes were red, and he had lost weight.

When he saw me, he stood up immediately.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he whispered:

“How are the girls?”

“They’re beautiful,” I replied. “They’re waiting for their father.”

He covered his face with his hands.

“I’m sorry.”

I wanted to hug him.

I wanted to scream at him.

I wanted to ask how he could have left me when I needed him most.

Instead, I simply said:

“Let’s hear the truth first.”

The specialist explained everything carefully.

The clinic had discovered an old administrative error involving patient identification records. The error had caused serious confusion, but it did not, by itself, prove that the wrong embryos had been used.

They had reviewed the available records and arranged independent DNA testing.

We would have to wait for the results.

Those were the longest days of my life.

Every morning, I woke up wondering whether the truth would change everything.

Andrew started visiting the hospital regularly.

At first, he barely spoke to me.

He simply held the girls, changed their diapers, and watched them sleep.

One evening, I found him sitting beside their cribs, crying quietly.

I walked over.

“Andrew?”

He looked up.

“I’ll regret missing that moment for the rest of my life.”

He reached for my hand.

My hands were sweating.

Andrew closed his eyes.

I started crying.

Our girls were ours.

“The original administrative error involved patient records and treatment documentation. We have found no evidence that the embryos were switched. The anonymous message that was sent to your husband presented an unverified allegation as fact.”

I looked at Andrew.

He was crying too.

But the doctor wasn’t finished.

“We also traced the source of the anonymous message. It came from someone who had previously worked at the clinic and had been involved in a separate dispute with the management. We are investigating how your private information was obtained.”

Andrew lowered his head.

“I believed a stranger before I believed my wife.”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth was that the DNA results had answered one question.

But they hadn’t erased what had happened.

“You didn’t just leave me, Andrew,” I finally said. “You left me when I was waking up from surgery. I had just given birth to our daughters. I was frightened, weak, and looking for the person who had promised to be beside me.”

He began crying again.

“I know.”

“No. I don’t think you understand. For ten years, you were the person who helped me survive every disappointment. And when our biggest dream finally came true, you weren’t there.”

He reached for my hand.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness immediately. But I want to spend the rest of my life showing you that I can be the husband and father I promised to be.”

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I said something I had never imagined saying:

“I love you. But love doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened. We have to rebuild what you broke.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

Months passed.

The girls grew stronger every day.

We named them Lily and Grace.

Andrew attended every pediatric appointment. He learned how to prepare bottles, change diapers, and calm them when they cried in the middle of the night.

He also started seeing a counselor with me so we could work through everything that had happened.

Our marriage wasn’t magically perfect again.

There were difficult conversations.

There were nights when I remembered that empty hospital room and cried.

And there were moments when Andrew had to accept that saying sorry was only the beginning.

But slowly, we began finding our way back to each other.

One evening, almost six months after the twins were born, I walked into the nursery.

Andrew was sitting in the rocking chair with Lily asleep on his chest and Grace resting in his arms.

He was singing softly.

When he noticed me, he smiled.

“Look at them,” he whispered. “Ten years of waiting, and now I can’t imagine a life without them.”

I stood in the doorway, watching the three people I loved most.

I nodded.

He kissed Grace’s forehead.

I walked over and kissed his cheek.

For ten years, I had believed the greatest miracle of my life would be becoming a mother.

A family isn’t held together by blood tests, perfect circumstances, or beautiful promises.

It’s held together by honesty, responsibility, forgiveness, and the decisions people make when things become difficult.

I still remember waking up after my C-section and finding an empty chair beside my bed.
