Every birthday, Grandma slipped a $1,000 deposit receipt into my card and told me it was for my future. After she died, the teller checked my account twice before saying it was empty. But the withdrawal date matched a photograph I’d once answered with a heart, so I made one careful call from my car.
On my eighteenth birthday, Grandma handed me an envelope before she’d even finished making pancakes.
“Open it.”
“Can I eat first?”
“No.”
That was Grandma Daisy. Presents were serious business.
ON MY EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY, GRANDMA HANDED ME AN ENVELOPE.
Inside was a birthday card with two puppies wearing party hats.
A bank deposit receipt slipped out.
$1,000.
“Grandma.”
“What?”
“You did it again.”
“Of course I did.”
A BANK DEPOSIT RECEIPT SLIPPED OUT.
I looked at the coat hanging beside the back door. Brown wool, older than some of my friends, with three visible patches.
“You need a new coat.”
“I’ve got a coat, Margot dear.”
“It has three patches.”
“Then it’s got three good repairs.”
“YOU NEED A NEW COAT.”
I laughed despite myself.
She tapped the receipt.
“This is for your future.”
Grandma had opened the savings account for me when I was little. Every year, no matter how tight things were, she managed another thousand dollars.
“THIS IS FOR YOUR FUTURE.”
“Promise you won’t touch it until I’m gone,” she said. “While I’m here, I’ll take care of you.”
“I don’t like when you say that, Grandma.”
“Then I’ll say it faster next year.”
I promised.
“WHILE I’M HERE, I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU.”

Grandma had been taking care of me since I was four.
That was when my mother, Victoria, left me at her house.
“Just until I get settled,” Mom said.
She got settled.
Remarried.
Had two more daughters.
Bought a house.
But she never came back for me.
GRANDMA HAD BEEN TAKING CARE OF ME SINCE I WAS FOUR.
Mom wasn’t completely absent. Sometimes I almost wished she had been.
She appeared at Christmas. Called on birthdays. Took me to lunch every few months and asked about school as though she’d missed a parent-teacher conference instead of most of my childhood.
Meanwhile, Grandma did the actual work.
MOM WASN’T COMPLETELY ABSENT.
She taught me to drive.
Sat awake when I had the flu.
Helped me through my first breakup.
Clapped louder than anybody when I got into nursing school.
Every birthday came with another card.
SHE TAUGHT ME TO DRIVE.
Another receipt.
Another thousand dollars.
Then Grandma got sick.
I put nursing school on hold.
I worked extra shifts and spent the rest of my time with her.
GRANDMA GOT SICK.
One afternoon, after another bill arrived, I called Mom from the hospital hallway.
“I need some help.”
“What kind?”
“Grandma’s expenses are piling up. Even if you could cover groceries for a while, or come stay with her so I could work another shift…”
“I NEED SOME HELP.”
Mom sighed.
“Margot, things are tight here too.”
“I know. I’m not asking you to pay everything.”
“I have my own family to think about.”
I stopped looking at the bill.
Her own family.
“I HAVE MY OWN FAMILY TO THINK ABOUT.”
“Okay.”
“Don’t be like that.”
“Like what?”
“You know what I mean.”
I did.
That was the problem.

Grandma died four months later.
After the funeral, I found her last birthday card in my desk.
GRANDMA DIED FOUR MONTHS LATER.
The deposit receipt was still tucked inside.
I’d kept every one.
I was supposed to be returning to nursing school, and for the first time, the promise I’d made to Grandma allowed me to touch the money.
I’D KEPT EVERY ONE.
So I went to the bank.
The teller pulled up the account.
Then she frowned.
She typed something.
Checked again.
“I’m sorry, ma’am.”
“What?”
THE TELLER PULLED UP THE ACCOUNT.
“The balance was withdrawn several months ago.”
I thought I’d misunderstood her.
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
“There must be a mistake. Please check again.”
She did.
I THOUGHT I’D MISUNDERSTOOD HER.
My hands settled on the edge of the counter.
“Who withdrew it?”
The teller checked the account holders, then the withdrawal record. Grandma had opened the savings account when I was little, with Mom listed as an authorized adult. Years later, Grandma added me but never removed her. I’d forgotten Mom’s name was still attached to it.
“WHO WITHDREW IT?”
The teller looked at me. “Your mother took it all months ago.”
Mom had remembered something I hadn’t.
She had taken the money.
All of it.
I asked for the date.
“YOUR MOTHER TOOK IT ALL MONTHS AGO.”
The moment the teller told me, I knew exactly what had happened around then.
Mom had sent me a photograph of herself beside a new car.
“Finally upgraded! 🚗”
I replied with a heart.
A week later came pictures of my half-sisters with matching laptops.
MOM HAD SENT ME A PHOTOGRAPH OF HERSELF BESIDE A NEW CAR.
New clothes.
Shopping bags.
I wondered where Mom suddenly found the money.
Now I knew.

I walked to my car carrying Grandma’s birthday card.
I WONDERED WHERE MOM SUDDENLY FOUND THE MONEY.
I sat behind the wheel until my hands stopped shaking.
Then I made one call.
My younger sister Lena answered on the third ring.
We weren’t close.
That suddenly seemed important.
“Lena, I need your help.”
WE WEREN’T CLOSE.
“What’s wrong?”
“But Mom can’t know beforehand.”
Silence.
Then she said, “Okay.”
We met that evening.
I showed her the transaction date.
“When did Mom buy the car?”
I SHOWED HER THE TRANSACTION DATE.
Lena stared at the paper.
“That week.”
“Did she say where the money came from?”
Her eyes moved to mine.
“Grandma.”
I went still.
“What?”
“Mom said Grandma left her some money.”
“DID SHE SAY WHERE THE MONEY CAME FROM?”
“Grandma didn’t leave her that money.”
I showed Lena the birthday card.
Then the old deposit slips I’d brought with me.
One thousand dollars.
Year after year.
Lena read them quietly.
“These were yours?”
“GRANDMA DIDN’T LEAVE HER THAT MONEY.”
“They were for nursing school. My future. Whatever I needed after Grandma was gone.”
“Does Mom know you know?”
“No.”
Lena took out her phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling Phoebe.”
“DOES MOM KNOW YOU KNOW?”
Our youngest sister answered on video.
Ten minutes later, the money wasn’t even the only thing making me angry.
“Mom always said you didn’t really want anything to do with us,” Phoebe said.
I stared at her little face on Lena’s screen.
“What?”
THE MONEY WASN’T EVEN THE ONLY THING MAKING ME ANGRY.
“She said you had Grandma and your own life.”
Lena nodded.
“When we were younger, Mom said not to pressure you.”
“She told me you girls were always busy,” I said.
Lena gave a humorless laugh.
“Apparently we were all very busy.”
“SHE SAID YOU HAD GRANDMA AND YOUR OWN LIFE.”
Phoebe looked upset.
“Why didn’t you come on our beach trip three years ago?”
“What beach trip?”
Neither sister spoke.
“The girls have school.”
“Margot’s working.”
“She probably won’t come.”
“Don’t bother her.”
“SHE PROBABLY WON’T COME.”
I’d heard some version of every one.
Lena eventually asked, “What are you going to do?”
I looked at Grandma’s card.
“I have an idea.”

The next morning, everything was ready.
I’D HEARD SOME VERSION OF EVERY ONE.
Mom had given me the spare key to her new car months earlier after I’d driven it home from a family dinner.
She’d never asked for it back.
I also had Grandma’s sewing tin.
Inside were spare buttons she’d saved from coats and sweaters she refused to replace.
I ALSO HAD GRANDMA’S SEWING TIN.
I chose the brown button that matched her old patched coat.
One belonged to what Mom had bought. The other stood for what Grandma had gone without so I could have a future.
I put both objects into a small cloth bag.
Nothing else.
No letter.
No accusation.
I PUT BOTH OBJECTS INTO A SMALL CLOTH BAG.
I drove to Mom’s office and handed the bag to a same-day courier outside.
“Reception desk. For Victoria.”
Then I parked across the street.
Lena and Phoebe arrived a few minutes later.
“You sure about this?” Lena asked.
“No.”
“YOU SURE ABOUT THIS?”
My phone rang.
Mom.
I answered.
She was already shouting.
“What have you done?! How am I supposed to show my face at work now?”
“Nobody at your office knows anything.”
Silence.
Then, “What?”
“HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SHOW MY FACE AT WORK NOW?”
“I didn’t tell them, Mom.”
“But the key…”
“And Grandma’s button,” I said.
Her breathing changed.
“Margot.”
“Nobody at your office knows.”
I looked at Lena and Phoebe.
“We do.”
“NOBODY AT YOUR OFFICE KNOWS.”
Another silence.
Longer this time.
“What did you tell my daughters?”
I looked at them.
“They’re my sisters.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Come downstairs, Mom.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Okay.”
“THEY’RE MY SISTERS.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means okay.”
I hung up.

Thirty seconds later, Lena’s phone rang.
She declined it.
“WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?”
Then she typed one message.
“Please come down.”
Mom appeared seven minutes later.
She still had the little cloth bag in her hand.
The car key showed between her fingers.
SHE STILL HAD THE LITTLE CLOTH BAG IN HER HAND.
She looked at Lena.
Then Phoebe.
Then me.
“You had no right to drag them into this.”
I almost admired the sentence.
“Why did you take Grandma’s money?”
“YOU HAD NO RIGHT TO DRAG THEM INTO THIS.”
Mom glanced toward the office doors.
“Not here.”
“Nobody is listening.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Then let’s walk.”
We moved toward the far end of the parking lot.
Mom stopped beside her car.
“NOBODY IS LISTENING.”
I looked at the hood, then at the little cloth bag still clenched in her hand.
“It wasn’t like that,” she said.
“What was it like?”
“Your grandmother always favored you.”
Lena frowned. “Mom.”
“Stay out of it.”
“YOUR GRANDMOTHER ALWAYS FAVORED YOU.”
“You told us Grandma left you money.”
Mom’s eyes flashed.
“I said she wanted all of you taken care of.”
“No,” Lena said. “You said she left you money.”
Mom looked at me.
“Margot lived with her.”
“YOU TOLD US GRANDMA LEFT YOU MONEY.”
There it was.
“You had Grandma,” she said. “My girls didn’t.”
Phoebe looked at her.
“Your girls?”
Mom ignored that.
“You got years of help from her. You lived there for free. She paid for things. She saved for you while I was raising two children.”
“YOU GOT YEARS OF HELP FROM HER.”
I stared at my mother.
“Grandma wasn’t payment for losing my mother.”
She flinched.
“Don’t twist this.”
“I’m not.”
“You always act like you were the only one who went without something.”
“GRANDMA WASN’T PAYMENT FOR LOSING MY MOTHER.”
“I was four.”
“I was young too!”
Mom looked from one daughter to another.
Then she tried again.
“You had Grandma. They had me.”
“Those weren’t equal things you got to trade.”
“I WAS YOUNG TOO!”
“I didn’t say they were.”
“You just did.”
Mom gripped the little bag.
“I intended to replace some of it.”
“With what?”
She looked away.
“The car?”
No answer.
“I INTENDED TO REPLACE SOME OF IT.”
“The laptops?”
Phoebe stared at her own hands.
“I didn’t know.”
“I know you didn’t.”
Lena opened the bag she had brought and pulled out her laptop.
“Sell it.”
“I KNOW YOU DIDN’T.”
Mom blinked.
“What?”
“Sell mine. Put the money back.”
Phoebe spoke immediately.
“Mine too.”
“No.”
Both sisters looked at me.
“You don’t owe me what she bought you.” Then I looked at Mom. “She does.”
“SELL MINE. PUT THE MONEY BACK.”
Mom’s face turned pale.
“So what now? You’re going to report me?”
“I already asked the bank about challenging the withdrawal.”
“You’re doing this to your own mother?”
“You went to the bank first.”
“YOU’RE GOING TO REPORT ME?”
“Margot, I had access to that account.”
“That doesn’t make the money yours.”
“I was going to fix it.”
“When?”
She had no answer.
“Sell the car,” I said.
Her head snapped up.
“What?”
“I WAS GOING TO FIX IT.”
“Start putting it back.”
“I need a car.”
“You needed that car?”
She looked at the polished vehicle behind her.
The answer was obvious.
Her voice lowered.
“If you keep doing this, you’re going to tear this family apart.”
“START PUTTING IT BACK.”
Lena spoke before I could.
“Which family?”
Mom turned toward her.
Lena didn’t look away.
Mom looked down at Grandma’s brown coat button in her palm.
Then she closed her fingers around it.
“WHICH FAMILY?”
Mom eventually opened her hand and gave me Grandma’s button.
“I need to go back inside.”
Nobody stopped her.
Lena watched her leave.
“Well.”
Phoebe looked at me.
“What happens now?”
NOBODY STOPPED HER.
“I don’t know.”
It was the first honest answer any of us had received all morning.

We went to Grandma’s house.
I needed to start sorting her things, and somehow my sisters came with me.
Phoebe found the patched brown coat hanging beside the back door.
WE WENT TO GRANDMA’S HOUSE.
“Grandma wore this at Christmas.”
“Every Christmas.”
She touched one patch.
“Why didn’t she buy another one?”
“She kept saying this one still worked.”
Lena was quiet.
“GRANDMA WORE THIS AT CHRISTMAS.”
Then she asked, “Why didn’t you ever come on vacation with us?”
“I didn’t know I was invited.”
Her head lifted.
“We asked Mom.”
“She never asked me,” I said.
Phoebe sat down.
“Mom said Grandma didn’t like us staying here.”
“I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS INVITED.”
I stared at her.
“Grandma kept asking why you never did.”
Phoebe looked down at the table.
Eventually, Lena opened one of Grandma’s photo boxes.
We sat around the kitchen table looking through pictures.
It was awkward.
“GRANDMA KEPT ASKING WHY YOU NEVER DID.”
We weren’t suddenly three inseparable sisters.
We had too many missing years for that.
But for once, Mom wasn’t standing between us explaining what somebody else supposedly felt.

“I listed the car.”
I sat down.
“Okay.”
WE WEREN’T SUDDENLY THREE INSEPARABLE SISTERS.
“When it sells, I’ll start replacing the money.”
“Good.”
“That’s all you’re going to say?”
“It’s what you should’ve done, Mom.”
She went quiet.
“Does this fix anything?”
“No.”
“DOES THIS FIX ANYTHING?”
“Can it?”
I looked at Grandma’s empty chair.
“I don’t know.”
Another pause.
“Can I come over?” she asked.
Lena and Phoebe were in Grandma’s kitchen with me.
“Not tonight.”
“I DON’T KNOW.”
Mom didn’t argue.
After we hung up, Phoebe picked up the birthday card I’d taken to the bank.
The final deposit receipt was still inside.
“She really did this every year?”
“Every year.”
“A thousand dollars?”
THE FINAL DEPOSIT RECEIPT WAS STILL INSIDE.
“Whatever she could manage.”
Lena looked at me.
“Are you still going back to nursing school?”
“Yeah.”
“How?”
I ran my thumb along the edge of Grandma’s card.
“I’ll figure it out.”
“ARE YOU STILL GOING BACK TO NURSING SCHOOL?”
Phoebe glanced at the patched coat.
“Did Grandma ever spend money on herself?”
I smiled.
“She liked good coffee.”
Lena laughed.
A minute later, Phoebe pulled another photograph from the box.
“SHE LIKED GOOD COFFEE.”
“Margot.”
I leaned over.
All three of us were in it.
I was maybe eleven. Lena was little, Phoebe barely more than a toddler.
Grandma stood behind us with one hand on my shoulder.
ALL THREE OF US WERE IN IT.
I didn’t remember the photograph being taken.
I took the photograph from Phoebe.
Then I placed it beside Grandma’s last birthday card, with the things I was keeping.
