My granddaughter found a diamond ring at Walmart, and I returned it to its owner. The next morning, a stranger knocked on my door and said he’d been searching for me for years. I wanted to know why, and I wasn’t ready for the answer.
I stood there looking with contempt at this stubborn rich man, even though just a few days ago I hadn’t known he existed.
“You can choke on that ring, but you’ll never see Ellie.”
It all started with a routine grocery run.
***
Every Friday, Ellie and I go to Walmart. Milk, bread, whatever’s on sale.
I’m seventy. Ellie is my seven-year-old granddaughter, and I’m raising her alone.
It all started with a routine grocery run.
Money is tight. Some months I choose between my prescriptions and her new shoes. There’s a pot under the leak in my kitchen ceiling.
That Friday, I stood in the juice aisle holding a carton of orange juice. Six dollars.
Ellie loves it. I put it in the cart. Took it out.
“Grandma, it’s okay,” Ellie said. “We can get the water kind.”
She’s seven. She shouldn’t know how to say that.
Money is tight.
I put the carton back. “Next week, sweetheart.”
She never complains. That’s the hardest part.
We cut through the candy aisle so she could look at the Halloween bags.
Suddenly Ellie crouched and reached behind a box.
“Grandma. Somebody left a treasure.”
In her palm sat a gold ring. The diamond was bigger than anything I’d ever seen outside a jewelry store window.
She never complains.
My heart started pounding.
I looked around. The aisle was empty.
For one shameful second, I thought: Nobody saw. Just slip it in your purse.
I thought about the roof. The juice. The pills I’d been cutting in half.
That ring could pay for all of it.
“Grandma?” Ellie looked up at me. “Do you think somebody’s crying because they lost it?”
In her palm sat a gold ring.
My face went hot.
“Let’s find out, sweetheart.”
We started toward customer service.
Maybe you’re a fool. Nobody ever hands you anything.
Because it isn’t yours. That was my mother’s voice. We don’t take what isn’t ours.
Was I really going to start stealing at seventy, with my granddaughter holding my hand?
That ring could pay for all of it.
Then a woman burst through the front doors.
Mid-forties. Mascara down her cheeks. One shoe untied. She glanced over her shoulder like someone was chasing her.
“Please! Has anyone turned in a diamond ring? I was here twenty minutes ago!”
Ellie ran straight to her.
“Ma’am, is this yours?”
Maybe you’re a fool.
The woman froze, then dropped to her knees, clutching the ring.
“Thank you. Oh my God, thank you.”
She looked up at Ellie and studied her face, stunned, like she was seeing a ghost.
“Was it your wedding ring, dear?” I asked.
“No. It’s much more complicated. You really saved my life.”
Her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, went pale, and hurried outside.
“It’s much more complicated.”
I never even got her name.
We went home with our groceries. I thought that was the end of it.
I was wrong.
At 7:15 the next morning, someone pounded on my front door.
A black SUV sat at the curb. A tall man in a dark suit stood on my porch holding a large envelope.
I kept the chain on.
I thought that was the end of it.
“Can I help you?”
“Are you the woman whose granddaughter found a diamond ring yesterday?”
“Who’s asking?”
“My name is Nate. Ma’am, we’ve been looking for you for years.”
“For me?”
“For you and your granddaughter.”
“Ma’am, we’ve been looking for you for years.”
“Why?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he pulled a photograph from the envelope and slid it through the gap in the door.
I almost refused to take it. But then I noticed the ring.
A smiling woman stood beside a teenage girl, her arm wrapped around the girl’s shoulders. On her finger was the same enormous diamond ring Ellie had found at Walmart.
I looked closer at the girl.
He didn’t answer.
The smile. The dark hair. Those familiar eyes.
My hands went cold.
It was Claire. My daughter-in-law. Ellie’s mother.
I’d known her since she was twenty, but I’d never seen a picture of her as a teenager.
Claire and my son Daniel had died in a car accident three years ago. Ellie was only four.
For a moment, all I could do was stare at that photograph. I hadn’t expected to see Claire’s face on a stranger’s doorstep, much less beside a woman wearing that ring.
Ellie’s mother.
I took the chain off.
“Where did you get this?”
“That’s our mother, Eleanor. And that’s my sister Claire.”
“Claire never had a brother.”
“She never told you?”
“She said she didn’t talk to her father. That’s all.”
“She never told you?”
“Her father is my father.”
“And the woman at Walmart?”
“My other sister, Meredith.”
“Why was she crying over a ring?”
“It was our mother’s. Mom wanted Claire’s first child to have it.”
“Then why didn’t Claire’s child get it?”
It was Claire, my daughter-in-law.
“Dad wouldn’t give it up. He cut Claire off nine years ago.”
This whole story seemed unreal to me.
“And Meredith?”
“She took it from his nightstand two days ago. She was bringing it to you.”
“She stole it.”
“Yes.”
“Why not ask him?”
“He cut Claire off nine years ago.”
“He’d never agree. He won’t even say Claire’s name.”
“And she lost it in a candy aisle.”
“She can explain that.”
“How did you find us?”
“We’d been trying to find Claire for years. Three months ago, an investigator found a guardianship record naming you and Ellie. That’s when we learned she’d died.”
This whole story seemed unreal to me.
“You didn’t know your sister was dead?”
“No.” His voice cracked. “We should’ve tried harder.”
“It’s been three years.”
“I know. We sent two letters through a law firm.”
I thought of my kitchen drawer full of unopened envelopes.
“What do you want?”
“It’s been three years.”
“My father is dying. The doctors give him weeks.”
“I’m sorry.”
In reality, I didn’t care.
“Meredith and I want Ellie to meet him before he goes.”
“And your father?”
“He says he doesn’t want to.”
In reality, I didn’t care.
“Then why did you come?”
“Because we think he’s lying. To himself.”
“Explain.”
“He’s stubborn. Proud. He’s carried something for years, and he won’t tell us what. We think he wants her, but he can’t forgive himself.”
“So you’re doing this behind his back.”
“Then why did you come?”
“Yes. And she’s our niece. We want to know her, too.”
“You let the time slip away.”
“I know. We should’ve stood up to Dad. We didn’t.”
“Why bring a little girl to a man who doesn’t want her?”
“Because soon it’ll be too late for them to meet.”
I crossed my arms.
“Are you trying to take her?”
“You let the time slip away.”
“What? No.”
“Rich family. Lawyers. And me with a leaking roof.”
“Nobody’s taking anyone. I swear.”
“Swearing is cheap.”
He took a velvet pouch from his coat.
“Meredith gave me this. It’s Ellie’s.”
“Swearing is cheap.”
“I don’t want it.”
“Then hold it for her. Please.”
He walked back to the SUV.
I locked the door and sat at the kitchen table. The pouch lay in front of me.
What if they want to take her?
They had money. Lawyers. I had a leaking roof and a weak heart.
What if they want to take her?
Ellie came downstairs in her socks, hugging her stuffed rabbit.
“Who was at the door, Grandma?”
“They went to the wrong door.”
She slid a drawing across the table.
Four stick figures. Me, Ellie, and two stars above us.
“That’s Mommy and Daddy,” she said. “They’re watching.”
Me, Ellie, and two stars above us.
“It’s beautiful.”
“Grandma? Sometimes I wish our family was bigger.”
“Why, sweetheart?”
“All my friends have aunts and uncles and cousins. I love you, but sometimes it’s lonely with just the two of us.”
“I know, baby.” I pulled her closer. “I wish things were different, too.”
“Do you think I’ll ever have a big family?”
“I wish things were different, too.”
I couldn’t bring myself to answer.
I kissed her hair and looked at the pouch.
Could I keep her from her grandfather, with only weeks left? But what if he broke her heart?
Back then, I didn’t yet know that he would break mine, too.
They had money. Lawyers.
I decided to meet him first. Alone.
My phone buzzed. Unknown number.
“Hi, this is Meredith. We met at Walmart yesterday.”
“What do you want?”
“Please don’t judge us by what Nate told you.”
“Was he lying?”
Unknown number.
“Not exactly. But he doesn’t know everything.”
“Then tell me.”
“I’d rather do it in person. I’m at St. Luke’s cafeteria.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t. Not yet. But there’s something about Claire and your son you deserve to know.”
My son…
“Why should I trust you?”
I left Ellie with my neighbor Pat and drove to St. Luke’s.
Meredith sat in the corner with a coffee she hadn’t touched.
“You came,” she said.
“Have you been following my granddaughter?”
“Yes. For three days.”
“Why?”
“Have you been following my granddaughter?”
“I couldn’t make myself approach you. What was I supposed to say?”
“Then what happened at Walmart?”
“I was about to talk to you in the candy aisle. Then I saw Dad’s driver at the entrance.”
“His driver?”
“Dad discovered the ring was gone. He guessed what I was doing.”
“And sent someone after you?”
“Then what happened at Walmart?”
“Frank. To bring me home before I reached you.”
“So?”
“I panicked. I hid the ring behind the candy and let Frank take me to the car. Then I begged him to let me go back for my wallet.”
“And Ellie found it.”
“Yes.”
“I panicked.”
“The phone call?”
“Dad. He was furious.”
“You told me Ellie saved your life.”
“She saved something I could never replace. That ring was Mom’s last wish for Claire’s child.” Her eyes filled. “And I’d already failed Claire.”
“How?”
“She saved something I could never replace.”
“She wrote me a year before she died. I never answered.”
“Why not?”
“Dad threatened to cut off anyone who contacted her. The house. The company. My kids’ tuition.”
“So you chose the money.”
“I chose the easy thing. I regret it.”
“Nate says your father doesn’t want Ellie.”
“So you chose the money.”
“That’s what he says.”
“You don’t believe him?”
“He’s kept Mom’s ring beside his bed for nine years. I think he wants to make things right, but something stops him.”
“What did Claire do that was so terrible?”
“She married your son.”
“Daniel?”
“She married your son.”
“Dad wanted someone wealthy. Daniel fixed school buses. Dad called him a mechanic with no future, right in front of Claire.”
“Daniel was the best man I ever raised.”
“I know. Claire said so in her letter.” Meredith hesitated. “There’s something else.”
“What?”
“When I told Dad that Claire was dead, he just said, ‘I know.’”
“Dad wanted someone wealthy.”
“He knew?”
“Apparently.”
“I buried them with eleven people there. Not one from her side.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Where is he?”
“Room 412.”
“Not one from her side.”
“Stay here.”
***
A thin, gray old man lay in the hospital bed with an oxygen tube under his nose.
He looked at me once. Then he knew.
“You’re Daniel’s mother.”
“I am.”
“My children had no right to send you. Get out. You’ll get nothing from me.”
“You’re Daniel’s mother.”
“They didn’t send me. And I don’t want anything from you.”
I dropped the velvet pouch on his blanket.
“You can choke on that ring, but you’ll never see Ellie.”
He didn’t touch it.
“Your daughter and my son died on Route 9. You didn’t even come to the funeral.”
“I know.”
I dropped the velvet pouch on his blanket.
“You knew they were dead?”
“The state police called the next morning.”
“Why you?”
“I was the last person Claire called.”
I stopped.
“She called you?”
“You knew they were dead?”
“She left a voicemail that afternoon.”
“Saying what?”
“‘Dad, we’re coming through Riverton at nine. I want you to meet your granddaughter.’ I still have it.”
My knees went weak.
“That night they left Ellie with me. Claire said they were going on a date. Ninety miles for a date?”
“It wasn’t a date.”
My knees went weak.
“Then what was it?”
“She was coming home.”
“Then why didn’t she come in?”
He closed his eyes.
“I watched them on the doorbell camera. Claire rang twice. Daniel held her hand. They waited.”
“And you?”
“She was coming home.”
“I stood inside with my hand on the lock.”
“You didn’t open it.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Pride. I’d told her never to come back. I couldn’t bring myself to take it back.”
“They were on that road forty minutes later.”
“You didn’t open it.”
“If I’d opened the door, maybe they’d be alive.”
“So that’s what you can’t forgive yourself for.”
He looked away.
“That’s why you missed the funeral?”
“I couldn’t face you. Or her grave.”
“And Ellie?”
His jaw tightened.
“You knew about her?”
“I knew where you lived.”
“Excuse me?”
“I drove past your house three times.”
“Three times?”
His jaw tightened.
“I saw the roof. A little girl in a coat too small for her.”
I stared at him.
“I’d sit in the car and think, what do I say? ‘I’m the man who didn’t open the door’?”
“You say, ‘I’m her grandfather.’”
“I couldn’t.”
“Then why send your driver after Meredith?”
‘I’m her grandfather.’
“I knew she’d bring the ring to you. I was afraid you’d look at me like I killed them.”
“You didn’t,” I said. “You just left them standing on your porch.”
He flinched.
“For three years, you let Ellie think nobody else wanted her.”
“I wanted her. I just didn’t know how.”
“You never tried.”
“I just didn’t know how.”
Silence.
“Nate says you don’t want to meet her.”
“I told them that.”
“Was it true?”
“No.” His voice broke. “Please. I don’t have much time. Let me see her.”
I wanted to say no.
Silence.
Then I thought of Ellie’s drawing. Her wish for a bigger family.
“I’m not forgiving you.”
“I’m not asking.”
“I’ll bring her tomorrow. For her, not for you.”
The next day, I brought Ellie to St. Luke’s.
In the elevator, I explained.
“I’ll bring her tomorrow. For her, not for you.”
“Mama had a daddy. He’s very sick. He wants to meet you.”
“Is he nice?”
“He’s very sad.”
“Is he sad because he lost somebody?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Meredith and Nate waited outside room 412.
“Is he nice?”
Ellie stopped at the foot of the bed.
“Hi.”
Richard couldn’t speak. He cried without a sound.
After a while, Richard picked up the velvet pouch.
“This was your great-grandmother’s ring. It’s yours.”
“The treasure,” Ellie whispered.
He cried without a sound.
“Yes.”
“It stays safe until she’s older,” I said.
“Of course.”
Richard handed me an envelope.
“I’ve arranged a trust fund for Ellie’s education. It’s Claire’s share of her mother’s money. I should’ve done it years ago.”
“The treasure.”
I looked at him.
“I still don’t understand you.”
“I know.”
“But I’ll bring Ellie on Sundays. For her sake.”
He nodded, his eyes filling.
That night, Ellie held the ring box up to the lamp.
“I still don’t understand you.”
“Grandma, was the treasure from Mama?”
“In a way, sweetheart.”
She smiled.
“I think she wanted me to find it.”
We’ve been back to see Richard every Sunday since. And her aunt and uncle.
Ellie finally has more family in her life.
