My mother came home from the morning shift on a Tuesday and set her apron on the kitchen table, and that’s how I knew something was wrong.
She never does that. In forty-seven years of waitressing, my mother has never once set her apron on the kitchen table. It goes on the hook by the back door. Always. The kitchen table is for eating.
“Mom?”
“I’m fine, Kim.”
She went to the sink and washed her hands. Then she stood there drying them on a dish towel for a long time, longer than anybody needs to dry their hands.
I picked up the apron to hang it up for her. Something crinkled in the front pocket.
It was a receipt. Main Street Café. A breakfast check. Two eggs over medium, wheat toast, hash browns, side of bacon, coffee. Sixteen dollars and forty cents.
The total had been paid exactly. To the penny.
And in the tip line, where people write a number, somebody had written three words in black ink. Neat, confident handwriting. The kind of handwriting that signs a lot of things.
Get a real job.
I read it twice. My face went hot.
“Who wrote this?”
My mother kept drying her hands.
“A man in a suit.”
“What man?”
“A customer, Kim. Hang that up, please.”
“Mom, somebody wrote this to you. On a receipt. At your job. After forty-seven years.”
“I’m aware of how long I’ve worked there.”
“Did you say something to him?”
“No.”
“Did Bev say something? Did anybody?”
“Bev wasn’t on the floor. And no. Nobody said anything. He paid at the register and left.”
I stood there holding that receipt. I wanted to drive down to the café and find the man and say things to him I’d regret.
“What did he look like?”
My mother finally hung up the dish towel.
“Late forties. Nice suit. Navy blue. Expensive watch. He was on his phone the whole time. He sent his eggs back twice. First time they were too runny. Second time they were too hard.”
“And you just smiled.”
“I always smile, honey. That’s the job.”
I looked at the receipt again.
“I’m going to find out who this is.”
“You don’t have to,” my mother said. She sat down at the table. “I know who it is.”
I stared at her.
“You know him?”
She took the receipt out of my hand. She looked at it for a long moment. Then she folded it in half, carefully, the way you fold a letter you’re going to keep, and put it back in the front pocket of her apron.
“I know who he is,” she said. “He doesn’t know who I am. That’s different.”
“Then tell me.”
“No.”
“Mom.”
“His father will be in on Sunday,” she said. “He comes in every Sunday. He’s ninety-one. He’ll sit in my section like he always does.”
“What does his father have to do with it?”
My mother got up and took the apron off the table and hung it on the hook by the back door, where it belonged.
“Everything,” she said. “Come in Sunday morning and you’ll see.”
I need to tell you about my mother and that diner, because otherwise none of this will make sense.
Her name is Darlene Hageman. She was born in 1958 in Rushford Falls, Minnesota. Population four thousand, give or take. She was the oldest of six. Her father worked at the creamery. Her mother took in ironing.
She started at the Main Street Café in the spring of 1979, three weeks after she turned twenty-one. She was going to work there one summer, she says. Save up for nursing school.
She never went to nursing school.
The café sits on the corner of Main and Third. Red booths along the windows. A long counter with twelve stools that spin. A pie case by the register. A coffee pot that has never, as far as anyone knows, been allowed to go empty during business hours.
My mother works the morning shift. Six to two. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday mornings until noon.
She has worked that shift for forty-seven years.
She has worked it through three owners. Through my father’s heart attack in 1994 and his funeral in 2011. Through both of my pregnancies. Through her own two knee replacements, the second one with a walker for three weeks, because, she said, “my section doesn’t wait tables itself.”
She knows every regular by name. She knows how they take their coffee and what they order and whether their wife’s been sick and how their grandkids did in the wrestling tournament. She knows which farmers can’t pay this month and quietly takes their checks to the back so the owner can carry them.
She’s not famous. She’s not important. She’s a waitress.
When I was a teenager, I was embarrassed by that. My friends’ mothers were teachers or worked at the bank or had jobs in the county offices. Mine wore a pink polyester uniform and smelled like bacon grease when she came home.
When I was sixteen, a boy at school asked me what my mom did. I said she worked in food service.
I’ve never forgotten it. I’m not proud of it.
She knew. Of course she knew. She always knows.
She never said anything about it either.
So when she told me to come in Sunday morning, I didn’t argue. I didn’t know what she was going to do. I didn’t know who the man in the suit was or who his father was or what any of it had to do with a receipt.
I just knew my mother had folded that piece of paper the way you’d fold something precious. And I knew she had a look on her face I’d only seen a few times in my life.
It was the look she got when she already knew how something was going to end.
I couldn’t wait until Sunday.
Wednesday afternoon, I went down to the café myself. I sat at the counter and ordered a piece of pie I didn’t want, and I asked Bev Torgerson.
Bev has owned the Main Street Café for twelve years. She bought it from Lyle Dahl when he retired. She’s sixty-four and has a voice like a cement mixer and she’s the only person in Rushford Falls who has ever successfully told my mother to sit down.
“The man in the suit,” I said. “Tuesday morning. Navy blue. Nice watch.”
Bev wiped down the counter in front of me.
“You mean Craig Lundgren.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who’s Craig Lundgren?”
Bev stopped wiping.
“You don’t know?”
“Should I?”
She looked toward the kitchen door to see if anyone was listening. Then she leaned in.
“Craig Lundgren is Walt Lundgren’s boy.”
I knew Walt Lundgren. Everybody knew Walt Lundgren. He had a dairy farm west of town for sixty years, the big one with the blue silos. He was in his nineties now. He sold the herd a long time ago, but he still came into town every Sunday morning in his seed cap and church coat.
“I didn’t know Walt had a son.”
“Craig left when he was eighteen. Went to college in the Cities. Never came back. Made a lot of money in commercial real estate.” Bev’s mouth went tight. “He’s back now. Looking at property.”
“What property?”
Bev was quiet a second.
“This block,” she said.
I put my fork down.
“This block. This café?”
“The whole north side of Main. From the hardware store to the corner. He’s put in an offer on all of it. Lundgren Development. They want to put in a strip mall. Dollar store. A chain coffee place. Some apartments upstairs.”
“Are you going to sell?”
“I lease the building, honey. I don’t own it. The Feeney estate owns it. And the Feeney heirs all live in Arizona and don’t care.” She went back to wiping. “If Craig buys it, my lease runs out in August. And that’s that.”
I looked around. The red booths. The pie case. The old Hamm’s Beer clock above the door that’s been five minutes fast since before I was born.
“Does my mom know?”
“Your mother knows everything that happens in this town before it happens,” Bev said. “She knew last month.”
“She didn’t tell me.”
“Your mother doesn’t tell anybody anything. You should know that by now.” Bev paused. “He came in here Tuesday to look at the place. Walked around with a measuring tape. Took pictures of the kitchen. Then he sat down in her section like he owned it already.”
“And sent his eggs back twice.”
“And sent his eggs back twice. And then he left her that note.”
I sat there.
“Bev. Does Craig Lundgren know who my mom is?”
Bev looked at me for a long time.
“No,” she said. “I don’t believe he does.”
“Who is she? To him?”
Bev shook her head.
“That’s not mine to tell,” she said. “You come in Sunday.”
Sunday morning I was at the café at 6:45.
My mother was already there. She’d been there since 5:30. She always opens on Sundays because Bev goes to the early service at Our Savior’s.
She saw me come in and pointed at the end of the counter without a word.
I sat on the last stool.
The café was about half full. Farmers in their church clothes, getting breakfast before the ten o’clock service. Two old women who come every Sunday and split one cinnamon roll. A young family with a baby in a car seat.
At 7:05 the door opened and the bell rang, and Craig Lundgren walked in.
I knew it was him immediately. Navy suit, even on a Sunday. Expensive watch. Phone already in his hand. He looked around the café the way you’d look at a room you were about to buy.
My mother looked up from the coffee station.
“Good morning,” she said. “Sit anywhere you like.”
He sat in her section. The same booth as Tuesday, Bev told me later. Third from the end. By the window.
Mom brought him coffee. She didn’t ask if he wanted it. She just poured it.
He looked up at her.
I watched him look at her. I watched him not recognize her. Not even a flicker.
“Two eggs over medium,” he said. “Wheat toast. And make sure the eggs are actually medium this time.”
“I’ll tell the cook,” Mom said.
She smiled at him. The same smile she gives everybody.
She went to the window and put in the order. Then she came down to the end of the counter where I was sitting and refilled my coffee.
“He didn’t recognize you,” I said quietly.
“No. He wouldn’t.”
“Why wouldn’t he?”
“Because he was about eight months old the last time he saw me.”
I stared at her.
She went back down the counter.
Craig Lundgren spent the next twenty minutes on his phone. I could hear bits of it. Square footage. Zoning variance. Demolition timeline. He said the word “teardown” three times.
His eggs came. He looked at them for a long time. Then he ate them without saying anything.
At 7:25 the bell rang again.
It was Walt Lundgren.
Walt is ninety-one years old. He walks with a cane, slowly, one hip lower than the other. He wears a seed cap and a pair of bib overalls under a brown church coat. He has hands like baseball mitts, swollen at the knuckles from sixty years of milking cows.
He came through the door, and he stopped.
He saw his son.
His son saw him.
I watched both of their faces.
Craig looked surprised. Then uncomfortable. Then like he was doing math.
Walt didn’t look surprised at all.
Walt looked like a man who’d been waiting for something for a long time.
“Dad,” Craig said. “I didn’t know you still came here.”
“Every Sunday for forty-seven years,” Walt said.
“You didn’t tell me.”
“You didn’t ask.”
Craig stood up halfway in the booth. “Do you want to sit with me? I was just about to—”
“No,” Walt said. “I’m going to sit in my booth.”
He walked past his son.
He walked past the booth Craig was sitting in.
And he slid into the one directly across the aisle. The fourth booth from the end. Also in my mother’s section.
He hooked his cane over the edge of the table.
He set his seed cap on the seat beside him.
He folded his big swollen hands on the table.
My mother came over with the coffee pot.
“Morning, Walt.”
“Morning, Darlene.”
She poured his coffee. Black. She didn’t ask.
He didn’t look at the menu. There wasn’t one on his table. There never was. I realized later that Bev never put one there.
“I’ll have the usual,” Walt said.
He looked up at my mother.
“From 1979.”
The café went quiet.
Not everybody. Most people were still eating, still talking. But the people near us stopped. The two old women with the cinnamon roll stopped. A farmer at the counter put his fork down.
Craig Lundgren had turned all the way around in his booth. He was staring at his father.
“Dad. What does that mean?”
Walt didn’t look at him.
He was looking at my mother.
My mother stood there with the coffee pot in her hand for a long moment.
Then she set the pot down on the table.
She reached into the front pocket of her apron.
She took out the folded receipt.
She laid it on the table in front of Walt Lundgren.
“I think you should read this first, Walt,” she said.
Walt picked up the receipt.
He unfolded it with his swollen fingers. It took him a moment. He held it out at arm’s length, the way old men do when they won’t wear their reading glasses in public.
He read the order.
He read the total.
He read the tip line.
I watched his face.
It didn’t change much. Walt Lundgren’s face doesn’t change much. Sixty years of farming will do that. But something happened around his eyes. Something tightened. And the hand holding the receipt started, very slightly, to shake.
He looked across the aisle at his son.
“You wrote this,” he said.
It wasn’t a question.
Craig’s face went red.
“Dad, it was just. I was having a bad morning. The service was slow. She got my order wrong twice—”
“You wrote this,” Walt said again. “To Darlene.”
“I don’t even know her, Dad. She’s a waitress.”
Walt set the receipt down on the table.
He put both his big hands flat on either side of it.
“Craig,” he said. “Come sit here.”
“What?”
“Get out of that booth. Come sit across from me. Now.”
Craig hesitated. He looked around. Half the café was watching now. The farmer at the counter had turned all the way around on his stool.
“Dad, can we do this somewhere else? Not in front of—”
“No,” Walt said. “We’re going to do it right here. In this booth. Where it happened.”
Craig got up.
He came across the aisle and slid into the booth across from his father. He set his phone face down on the table. He looked, for the first time since he’d walked in, like somebody’s son instead of somebody’s boss.
Walt looked at my mother.
“Darlene. Would you sit down a minute?”
“I’ve got tables, Walt.”
“Bev’ll cover. Sit down.”
Bev had come in the back door at some point. She was standing by the kitchen window with her arms crossed. She nodded at my mother.
My mother slid into the booth beside Walt.
She folded her hands on the table. She didn’t look at Craig.
Walt took a long breath.
“Your mother died in March of 1979,” he said to his son. “You were three weeks old.”
Craig didn’t say anything.
“You know that. I told you that. But I never told you the rest of it.”
“Your mother had a bad delivery,” Walt said. “She lost too much blood. They kept her in the hospital in Rochester for three weeks. I drove back and forth every day. Ninety miles each way. You were in the nursery there. Then on March 21, she died. And they handed you to me and sent me home.”
He looked down at his hands.
“I was thirty-four years old. I had a hundred and ten head of dairy cattle. I had to milk at four-thirty in the morning and four-thirty at night. I had no family. Your grandparents were both gone. Your mother’s people were in Montana. I had nobody.”
“I didn’t know how to take care of a baby. I didn’t know how to change a diaper. I didn’t know how warm the bottle was supposed to be. I didn’t know anything.”
He was quiet a moment.
“The first week, I tried to do it all myself. You screamed day and night. I didn’t sleep. I fell asleep milking. I almost got kicked in the head by a cow on the fifth day because I passed out on the stool. I didn’t know what I was going to do.”
“On the eighth day, I put you in the truck and drove into town because I didn’t know what else to do. I didn’t have a plan. I just couldn’t stand to be in that house anymore. I came here. To this café. Because it was the only place open at six in the morning.”
He looked at my mother.
“And I sat in this booth. With you in a car seat on the table. Screaming. And I put my face in my hands. In front of everybody.”
My mother was looking at the table.
“And this girl came over,” Walt said. “Twenty-one years old. Pink uniform. She’d been working here three weeks. I didn’t know her. I’d never seen her.”
“And she didn’t say anything to me. She just picked you up out of that car seat.”
Craig was staring at my mother.
“She picked you up and put you on her shoulder and walked you up and down the aisle between the booths. And you stopped crying. In about two minutes. First time in a week.”
“Then she brought me two eggs over easy and rye toast and black coffee. And a bottle of warm milk for you. She’d gone back to the kitchen and warmed it up in a pan of water on the stove. I don’t know where she got the bottle.”
“I bought it,” my mother said quietly. “At the drugstore. On my break. I saw you come in the day before, too. You didn’t stay. You just sat in your truck in the parking lot for an hour with the baby crying. I figured you’d be back.”
Walt looked at her.
“You never told me that.”
“You never asked.”
Walt was quiet for a long time.
“I came back the next day,” he said to his son. “And the next. Every morning after milking. Six-fifteen. For two years.”
“Every single morning, Darlene would take you out of your car seat while I ate. She’d feed you your bottle. She’d burp you. She’d walk you up and down the aisle between her tables. She’d sing to you. Some mornings, she’d sit in this booth and hold you while I put my head down on the table and slept for twenty minutes. Because it was the only twenty minutes I got.”
“She changed your diapers in the bathroom back there. She taught me how. She taught me how warm the bottle should be. She taught me how to tell if you had a fever. She taught me to put you on your back to sleep, which nobody did back then. She’d read about it somewhere.”
“When you got your first tooth, she noticed it before I did. When you said your first word, it was in this booth.”
Craig was very still.
“What was it?” he said.
Walt looked at my mother.
My mother looked at the table.
“Dar,” she said quietly. “You couldn’t say Darlene. You said Dar.”
Craig Lundgren sat in that booth across from his ninety-one-year-old father and a sixty-eight-year-old waitress, and he didn’t say anything for a very long time.
The café was silent. Every single person in it was listening now. Bev had turned off the radio in the kitchen. The cook was standing in the window with his spatula. The two old women with the cinnamon roll were holding hands across the table.
“I never knew,” Craig said finally. “Dad. You never told me any of this.”
“No. I didn’t.”
“Why not?”
Walt looked at his hands for a long time.
“Because I was ashamed,” he said. “I couldn’t take care of my own son. A twenty-one-year-old girl had to do it for me. Every morning. In public. In front of the whole town. I was a grown man and I couldn’t do it.”
He shook his head.
“When you were two, I married Joyce, and she took over. And you stopped coming to the café. And you grew up. And by the time you were old enough to understand, it seemed too late. How do you tell your son, the first person who ever loved you after your mother was a waitress at the café, and I never paid her a dime?”
“You never paid her?”
“She wouldn’t let me. I tried. Every week. I’d leave money on the table. She’d stick it back in my coat pocket when she helped me on with it. Every single week for two years.”
My mother finally spoke.
“You paid me,” she said. “You came in every morning. You let me hold him. That was enough.”
Walt shook his head.
“It wasn’t enough. It was never enough. I knew it then and I know it now.”
He looked at his son.
“And you went off to the Cities, and you made your money, and you never came home. And I didn’t blame you. There was nothing here for you. I knew that. But I always figured, someday, he’ll come back. And he’ll walk into the café, and he’ll see her, and I’ll tell him.”
He picked up the receipt.
“I didn’t figure it’d be like this.”
He held it up so Craig could see the three words.
“Get a real job,” Walt said. “You wrote that to the woman who changed your diapers. Who fed you every morning for two years. Who taught your father how to keep you alive. In the same booth.”
Craig put his face in his hands.
“I didn’t know. Dad, I swear to God, I didn’t know.”
“I know you didn’t. That’s why I’m telling you now.”
“I was angry about something else. A deal fell through. I took it out on—” He stopped. “I took it out on her.”
“You did.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t tell me,” Walt said. “Tell her.”
Craig took his hands away from his face.
He looked across the table at my mother.
I watched him look at her. Really look. For the first time. The gray hair pinned up under the little paper cap Bev makes the morning girls wear. The pink uniform, faded from a thousand washings. The lines around her eyes. The hands, folded on the table, red from forty-seven years of hot dishwater.
“Mrs.—” He stopped. “I don’t even know your last name.”
“Hageman,” my mother said. “It was Johnson then.”
“Mrs. Hageman.”
“Darlene’s fine.”
“Darlene.” His voice cracked on it. “I’m so sorry.”
My mother looked at him.
She didn’t say it’s all right. She didn’t say don’t worry about it. I’ve known my mother my entire life, and she does not say things she doesn’t mean.
She looked at him for a long time.
“You were a good baby,” she said finally. “Fussy. But good. You liked to have your back patted in circles. Not up and down. Circles.”
Craig made a sound. Not a word. Just a sound.
“You used to grab my earring,” she said. “The little gold hoops. I had to stop wearing them. You pulled one right out once. It bled all over my uniform.” She almost smiled. “Lyle Dahl made me go home and change.”
“I’m sorry,” Craig said again. Quieter.
“For the earring?”
“For everything.”
My mother looked at him a long moment more.
Then she reached across the table and turned the receipt over so the three words were face down.
“I’ve had a real job for forty-seven years, Craig,” she said. “It’s this one. I’ve fed this whole town. Some of them, I’ve fed three generations. I know who’s sick and who’s broke and who’s drinking too much and whose kid is in trouble. Most mornings, I’m the first person they talk to. Some mornings, I’m the only one.”
“Your father came in here thirty-five years before anybody in this town knew what postpartum anything was, with a baby he didn’t know how to hold and his wife three weeks in the ground. And he put his face in his hands in front of everybody. And not one person in this café knew what to do.”
“Except the waitress.”
She pushed the receipt back toward him.
“So yes. It’s a real job. It’s about the realest one I know.”
Craig picked up the receipt.
He looked at it.
Then he folded it in half and put it in the inside pocket of his suit jacket.
“I’m going to keep this,” he said.
“Why?”
“So I don’t forget.”
Walt cleared his throat.
“Darlene. I’d still like my usual.”
My mother got up out of the booth. She picked up the coffee pot.
“Two eggs over easy,” she said. “Rye toast. Black coffee.”
“And?”
She looked at him.
“Walt.”
“Bring it,” he said. “Please.”
My mother went back to the kitchen.
She was gone a few minutes. When she came back, she had Walt’s plate in one hand and a coffee cup in the other.
And under her arm, she had a baby bottle.
An old one. Glass. With a rubber nipple gone yellow and hard with age.
She set the plate in front of Walt. She set the coffee in front of Walt.
Then she set the bottle down on the table in front of Craig.
It was empty. Clean. But old.
Craig stared at it.
“That’s the one I bought at the drugstore,” my mother said. “On my break. In March of 1979. Four dollars and twelve cents.”
“You kept it?”
“It’s been in the back of the kitchen cupboard for forty-seven years. Behind the old gravy boats. Lyle knew. Bev knew. Nobody ever threw it out.”
Bev, by the kitchen window, nodded.
Craig reached out and picked up the bottle.
He held it in both hands.
He didn’t say anything. He just held it and looked at it, and the tears ran down his face onto his navy blue suit, and he didn’t wipe them off.
Walt ate his eggs.
He ate them slowly. Every bite. He drank his black coffee. When he was done, he set his fork down and wiped his mouth with his napkin and folded it and set it on the plate.
“Good eggs, Darlene.”
“They’re always good, Walt.”
“They are. Forty-seven years.”
He reached into his coat pocket and took out his wallet. It was old. Brown leather. He took out a bill and laid it on the table.
My mother looked at it.
“Walt. No.”
“Darlene. Yes.”
“You don’t have to—”
“I haven’t paid for a breakfast in this café since March of 1979,” Walt said. “You never once let me. Every single time I’ve tried, you’ve put it back in my coat pocket.”
He pushed the bill toward her.
“I’m ninety-one years old. I’d like to pay for one breakfast before I die. Let me do this.”
My mother looked at the bill.
It was a hundred.
She stood there with her hand on the back of the booth for a long time.
Then she picked it up.
She folded it once. She put it in the pocket of her apron. The same pocket where the receipt had been.
“Thank you, Walt,” she said.
“Thank you, Darlene,” Walt said. “For all of it. I should have said it a long time ago.”
Craig didn’t leave.
He sat in that booth while his father finished his coffee. He sat there while the ten o’clock church crowd came in and filled up the café. He sat there while my mother waited on every table in her section, the same way she always does. He watched her the whole time.
He watched her refill old Mrs. Bakke’s coffee without being asked. He watched her slide a piece of pie across the counter to a teenage boy who’d only ordered toast, and wave him off when he tried to pay for it. He watched her stop at a table where a young couple sat with a toddler having a meltdown, and pick the toddler up out of his high chair, and put him on her shoulder, and walk him up and down the aisle between the booths.
The toddler stopped crying in about two minutes.
I watched Craig watch that.
He put his face back in his hands.
Around eleven, when the rush slowed down, he got up. He went to the counter. Bev was behind the register.
“Mrs. Torgerson.”
“Craig.”
“The lease on this building. When does it run out?”
Bev looked at him.
“August.”
“And the Feeney estate owns the building.”
“That’s right.”
Craig nodded. He took out his phone. He made a call right there at the counter. I heard his side.
“Jim. It’s Craig. On the Rushford Falls deal. I want to pull the offer on the Main Street block.”
A pause.
“All of it. Yes. I know. I know what we’ve put into it. I know. Pull it.”
A longer pause.
“No. I’m going to buy the café building myself. Personally. Not Lundgren Development. Me. Call the Feeney estate’s attorney first thing tomorrow and find out what they want for it. Whatever it is, I’ll pay it.”
Another pause.
“Because I owe somebody,” he said. “That’s why.”
He hung up.
He looked at Bev.
“Mrs. Torgerson, when I buy this building, I’m going to give you a new lease. Twenty years. Same rent you’re paying now. And I’m going to put one clause in it.”
Bev crossed her arms. “What clause?”
“That this café stays open. That it stays a café. And that it can never be torn down for any reason, for as long as Darlene Hageman wants to work here.”
Bev stared at him.
“And after that,” Craig said, “for as long as anybody wants to sit in that booth and eat eggs.”
My mother didn’t hear any of that. She was in the back, washing coffee cups.
I told her later, in the car on the way home.
She sat in the passenger seat with her apron in her lap. She didn’t say anything for a long time.
“Did you know he was going to do that?” I asked.
“No.”
“Did you hope he would?”
She looked out the window at the fields.
“I didn’t hope for anything, Kim. I just thought he should know who held him. That’s all. Everybody ought to know who held them when they couldn’t hold themselves.”
“Mom. Why didn’t you ever tell me? About Walt? About the baby?”
She was quiet.
“Because it was Walt’s story,” she said. “Not mine. He was ashamed. A man doesn’t want people knowing he couldn’t take care of his own child. I wasn’t going to take that from him. If he wanted to tell it, he could tell it. And he finally did.”
“You held him every morning for two years.”
“I did.”
“And you never told anybody.”
“Who was I going to tell?” She shook her head. “It was my job, honey. Somebody comes into your section and they need something, you bring it to them. Most of them need eggs and coffee. Walt needed somebody to hold his baby. So I held his baby.”
“That’s not your job.”
“Kim.” She turned and looked at me. “That’s exactly what my job is. That’s what it’s always been. You just never asked.”
I didn’t say anything.
I thought about being sixteen and telling a boy my mother worked in food service.
I thought about all the mornings she’d come home smelling like bacon grease, tired, her feet aching, and I’d been embarrassed by it.
I thought about forty-seven years of a woman walking up and down between red vinyl booths, carrying whatever the people in them needed. Coffee. Eggs. A baby. A piece of pie for a boy who couldn’t pay. A kind word for a farmer who was going under. Her hand on somebody’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry, Mom,” I said.
“For what?”
“For the boy in tenth grade. When I said you worked in food service.”
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she laughed. Really laughed. Leaned her head back against the headrest and laughed until she had to wipe her eyes.
“Oh, honey,” she said. “I do work in food service.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I know what you meant.” She patted my hand on the steering wheel. “I always knew what you meant. You were sixteen. Everybody’s embarrassed of their mother at sixteen. I was embarrassed of mine and she took in ironing.”
“It’s not the same.”
“It’s exactly the same. And you got over it. That’s all that matters.”
Craig Lundgren bought the building in October.
He paid more than the Feeney heirs were asking. I know because Bev told me, and Bev knows everything.
The new lease is framed on the wall behind the register now. Twenty years. With the clause. Bev had it framed at the Ben Franklin in Winona. She says it’s the best thing that ever happened to her.
Craig comes in every Sunday morning now. He drives down from Minneapolis on Saturday nights and stays at his father’s place. Sunday at seven-fifteen, they come into the café together. Walt with his cane. Craig in a sweater and jeans instead of a suit.
They sit in the fourth booth from the end. In my mother’s section.
They both order the usual.
Two eggs over easy. Rye toast. Black coffee.
Craig always leaves a tip. A big one. My mother always tries to give it back. He never lets her.
“You put it back in my coat pocket once,” he says. “Forty-seven years ago. I’m returning the favor.”
The first Sunday after he bought the building, he brought something with him. A frame. Small. Plain black wood.
Inside was the receipt.
The one from that Tuesday. Main Street Café. Two eggs over medium. Sixteen dollars and forty cents. Get a real job, in his own handwriting.
Underneath it, on a little card, he’d written something else, in the same handwriting.
To Dar. Who held me first. I’ll never forget it again. Craig.
He gave it to my mother at the booth.
She looked at it for a long time.
“Craig,” she said. “This is the worst thing you ever wrote to me.”
“I know.”
“Why would you want me to have it?”
“Because I want you to have the proof,” he said. “That I was wrong. And that I know it.”
She hung it in her kitchen. Right above the hook by the back door, where her apron goes.
Every morning when she leaves for work, she sees it.
Walt Lundgren passed away in February, at ninety-two. In his sleep. At home.
The funeral was at Our Savior’s. The church was full. My mother sat in the third pew, beside Craig. He asked her to.
When it was over, the family had the lunch at the café. Bev closed it for the afternoon. It was the first time anyone could remember the Main Street Café being closed on a weekday.
My mother waited on every table.
Craig tried to make her sit down. Bev tried. I tried.
“Don’t be silly,” she said. “These are my people. I’ll feed them.”
So she did. She walked up and down the aisle between the red booths, refilling coffee and carrying plates of ham and scalloped potatoes and bars, and stopping to put her hand on people’s shoulders.
When it was over and everybody had gone, Craig sat in the fourth booth from the end by himself.
My mother brought him a cup of coffee. Black. She didn’t ask.
She sat down across from him.
They didn’t say anything for a long time.
Then Craig reached into his jacket pocket and took out the old glass baby bottle. He’d kept it since that Sunday. He set it on the table between them.
“I’d like you to have this back,” he said. “For the cupboard. Behind the gravy boats.”
“Why?”
“Because somebody else might need it someday.”
My mother looked at the bottle.
Then she reached across the table and picked it up and held it in both hands.
“Somebody always does,” she said.
She got up. She took the bottle back into the kitchen. She put it in the cupboard behind the gravy boats, where it had been for forty-seven years.
Then she came back out, and tied on her apron, and started wiping down the tables for the next morning.
Because the café opens at six.
And someone is always going to walk in needing something.
And my mother is always going to be there to bring it to them.
