Part 2: The Envelope
Marla burst through my front door. She saw Abby in the jacket. She saw the ring box in my hand. The envelope.
She stopped.
Her face went white.
I said, quietly, Mom left this for me.
Marla didn’t say anything.
I said, Abby, sweetheart, go to your room for a minute.
Abby looked at her aunt. Then at me. She went.
I held up the note. I said, Marla promised to give these to you after I’m gone.
Marla said, I was going to give it to you. I forgot.
I said, For two years?
Marla’s voice got sharp. She said, You don’t understand. Mom always liked you better.
She said, She gave you the good dishes. She came to your house every Sunday. She sat with Abby.
She said, I was the one who drove her to the doctor. I was the one who handled her bills. And she leaves you five thousand dollars and her ring?
I said, So you kept it.
She said, I put it in Kayla’s jacket pocket. In the closet. I was going to decide what to do.
She said, Then Kayla outgrew it. And I forgot it was in there.
She said, I didn’t remember until last night. I couldn’t sleep.
I said, You sold my daughter a jacket. For my last eighty dollars. With my mother’s ring in the pocket.
Marla said, I didn’t know it was still there!
I held out the eighty dollars she’d left on my counter. The money she brought to buy back the jacket.
I said, Take your money. I’m keeping the jacket.
Marla said, That ring is worth eight thousand dollars. Half of it should be mine. I took care of her.
Then she said, If you keep it, I’ll tell everyone you stole it from Mom’s house.
I kept my voice calm.
Marla, I said, the note is in Mom’s handwriting. It has my name on it.
Marla grabbed her purse. She walked out. She slammed the door.
That night, my phone rang. My aunt Rose. Mom’s younger sister.
She said, Marla called me. She’s saying you took your mother’s ring.
She said, I need to tell you something, Jen.
I was there when your mother wrote that note.
She asked me to make sure Marla delivered it. I trusted her. I never checked.
Part 3: Two Years
I didn’t sleep that night. I sat at my kitchen table with Mom’s note. I let myself count.
Two years since Mom passed.
At her funeral, Marla wore Mom’s pearls. She said Mom gave them to her.
She said, Mom didn’t leave you anything, Jen. I’m sorry. She said you’d be fine.
I believed her. Mom was gone. I didn’t have the strength to ask questions.
Six months later, Tom got sick. Pancreatic cancer.
I counted his chemo treatments. Fourteen. Our insurance covered most. Not all.
I counted the bills. Forty-one thousand dollars. After insurance.
I sold Tom’s truck. I sold our good furniture. I sold my wedding ring. For rent.
Tom passed eleven months ago.
I counted the times I asked Marla for help. Three. Once for groceries. Once for a utility bill. Once for Abby’s school shoes.
She said no every time. She said, You need to learn to stand on your own.
Then I counted Mom’s envelope.
Five thousand dollars. It would have paid four months of rent. It would have bought Abby a coat. Groceries. Medicine.
It was in Kayla’s jacket pocket. In Marla’s closet. For two years.
Then I counted Abby.
Ten years old. She lost her grandmother. Then her father.
She wore a coat with holes in it all last winter. She never complained.
Yesterday, she found her grandmother’s ring in a pocket. She ran to me. She said, What are we going to do?
The next morning, someone knocked on my door.
It was Marla. With Kayla.
Part 4: Marla
Marla stood on my porch. Kayla beside her. Twelve years old. Looking at her shoes.
Marla said, We need to talk.
I let them in. Abby and Kayla went to Abby’s room.
Marla sat down at my kitchen table. She didn’t look at me.
She said, Aunt Rose called me last night. She said she was there when Mom wrote the note.
She said, I can’t say you stole it anymore.
Then her voice changed. Desperate.
She said, Jen, I need you to understand something. Things aren’t good at my house either.
She said, Greg lost his job eight months ago. He hasn’t told anyone. We’re behind on the mortgage.
She said, I sold Mom’s pearls last month. For the payment.
She said, The eighty dollars for the jacket? I needed it. For Kayla’s field trip.
She said, I can’t afford to lose that ring. Let me sell it. Split the money. Half for you. Half for me.
Then she said the thing she came to say.
Please. We’re sisters. You’d do it for me.
I felt that one land. It was meant to.
Because she was struggling too. And she was my sister.
I took a slow breath.
Marla, I said quietly, I’m sorry about Greg. I really am.
She nodded.
But Mom left this ring for Abby, I said. Not for me. Not for you.
I’m not selling it.
Marla’s face crumpled.
But you can have the five thousand, I said gently.
She stared at me.
Mom left it for when things get hard, I said. Things are hard for you right now.
You can have it. On one condition. You tell Greg the truth. And you go get help. Together.
Marla stared at the envelope on the table.
Then a small voice spoke from the hallway.
Kayla was standing there. Holding Abby’s hand.
She said, very quietly, Mom. I knew it was in the pocket.
I found it a year ago. You told me never to tell Aunt Jen.
That’s why I didn’t want the jacket anymore.
Part 5: Grandma’s Ring
Marla turned around. She stared at her daughter.
She said, You knew?
Kayla nodded. She was crying.
She said, Every time I wore it, I felt like Grandma was watching. I told you it didn’t fit anymore. It still fit.
She said, I wanted Abby to have it. So Grandma’s ring would get to her.
Marla put her face in her hands. She sobbed at my kitchen table.
She said, My twelve-year-old had more courage than me.
Abby walked over to her cousin. She hugged her.
Marla took the five thousand dollars. She told Greg that night. Everything.
They started seeing a financial counselor. Greg found a new job in the spring. They kept their house.
Marla paid me back the five thousand. Fifty dollars a week. For two years. She insisted.
She said, Mom left it for you. Not me.
She also paid back the eighty dollars for the jacket. Twice.
Marla and I have dinner every Sunday now. At my house. With the girls. Like Mom used to.
She told me one night that she’d been jealous of me her whole life. She said Mom always seemed happier at my house.
I said, She was happier at mine because she was helping. At yours, she was always being helped.
Marla laughed. Then she cried. She said, That’s exactly right.
Last month, Abby turned eleven.
I gave her a small box. Wrapped in pink paper.
Inside was her grandmother’s diamond ring. Cleaned. Sized to fit a chain. Hanging on a thin gold necklace.
Abby held it up. She looked at it for a long time.
She said, I’ll keep it safe, Mom. Forever.
Then Kayla gave Abby her present. A small envelope.
Inside was a photo. Their grandmother. At Abby’s fifth birthday party. Holding both girls on her lap.
On the back, Kayla had written:
Grandma would want you to have the coat too. And the ring. And the hug.
Abby wore her grandmother’s ring every day that winter.
On a gold chain. Under the jacket with the deep inside pocket.
Right where it was always meant to be.
