“Take your hand off your belt, Rick.”
Tom Callahan didn’t shout it.
He didn’t have to.
The security guard’s fingers came off his belt like they’d been burned. And the whole bank lobby, which had been humming with the hiss of the espresso machine and the shuffle of people waiting in line, went so quiet I could hear the clock ticking on the wall.
Tom looked down at the mud on the new gray carpet.
He looked at my grandfather’s boots.
Then he turned. Slowly. To the young teller behind the counter. Her nameplate said BRITTANY.
And I watched the color drain out of her face. From the top down.
“Do you know who this is?” Tom asked her.
“He, he said his name was Earl Doyle.”
“Earl Doyle,” Tom said, “co-signed the note that opened this bank’s second branch in 1974. He put up his north quarter-section as collateral when nobody else in this county would.”
He took a breath.
“Without that signature, there’s no corner office in this building. There’s no carpet. There’s no you.”
He paused.
“There’s no me.”
At the back of the line, the woman in the camel coat who’d snickered at my grandfather looked down at her purse. Then at the door.
She walked out without a word.
The glass doors sighed shut behind her.
My name is Casey Doyle. I’m twenty years old. I’m a sophomore at Iowa State, studying agronomy.
And that October, I was home for harvest. The way I’ve been home for harvest every single October since I was nine.
Which is to say, I was exactly where I wanted to be.
