“Please ask her to stop,” I whispered. “She’s treating me like a guest in my own home.”

I expected Claire to be insulted. I expected her to throw it at me.
What she did instead turned my stupid little apron stunt into something I hadn’t been prepared to hear.

Claire took the apron with a smile. She tied it around her waist, slowly, and smoothed it flat over her dress.
Then she looked me dead in the eye.
“That’s right,” she said. “And you’re already out the door. You just didn’t know it yet.”
“Claire, stop,” Mark snapped.
He didn’t say “what does that mean?” He said stop, the way you tell someone to stop before they spill a secret.

He reached for my arm. I stepped out of reach.
“No. She just announced to every person in this room that I’m being removed from my own marriage. I’d like to hear it now.”

Claire gave a short laugh and tugged the apron straight, like she was enjoying the feel of it.
“Oh, let me,” she said. “Fine. I’ll be simple about it. I realized that I made a mistake when I ended my marriage to Mark. I missed him. So months ago, I told him I wanted him back.”
My hand found the back of a chair. I looked at my husband.
“Do you want her back?”
“I told him I wanted him back.”
Mark stared at his feet for the longest time.
And the longer we stood there in silence, the more my question seemed stupid. Hadn’t he already shown me the answer with the constant comparisons?
“Yes,” he finally said, to the floor.
I nodded slowly. It felt like nodding at a stranger’s bad news. “Then why are you still married to me?”

“Our baby,” Claire said, reaching for Mark’s hand.
“Excuse me?” I said. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
She smiled like I’d just asked a stupid question.

“Mark is the father. After you two separate, I’ll be the child’s stepmother. I’ve already started planning the decor for the nursery.” She leaned toward me. “Don’t worry. I’ll be the best mom.”
It was bad enough finding out my husband planned to leave me.
But the way Claire was speaking about my baby suggested she was envisioning something far more than weekend visits.
I turned on Mark. “What exactly have you discussed with her about our baby?”
“Don’t worry. I’ll be the best mom.”
“We just talked about the future,” he said quickly. “That’s all. Nothing real.”
“It’s very real,” Claire said, and she wasn’t going to let him sand it down. “I’ve thought a lot about what’s best for the child. I have years of experience running a home. A baby needs structure.”
My voice came out low and steady, which surprised me. “I’m his mother. Not you.”
I watched that land.

“That’s enough,” Mark said, but softly, like he was asking her to lower the music.
“No, I’d like to hear this,” I said. “What exactly do you mean?”
“It would be easy to prove to the court how inadequate you are.” She counted on her fingers. “You can’t keep the house. You’re emotional. You’re overwhelmed. Mark has a whole list of complaints about you.”

Daniel rubbed his jaw and looked miserable.
“A few weeks ago, Mark asked me something. He said it was a hypothetical question. Whether a father could get primary custody if the mother, quote, wasn’t coping.”
The room went very still again.

That was when Tessa stood up. She is five foot two and fierce as a wet cat.
“Did you seriously just threaten a pregnant woman in front of all of us?”

She looked around the table as if the answer were obvious.

So I stopped arguing. I took my phone out of my pocket.
“What are you doing?” Mark asked.
“I want the contact details of anyone willing to tell my lawyer exactly what they heard tonight.”
For a second, nobody moved.
Then hands started going up. Tessa’s. Both Mark’s cousins’. Daniel’s wife. Daniel’s. More followed.
Claire’s confidence slipped as she looked around the table.
I took my phone out of my pocket.
“Dan,” Mark said, outraged. “We’re friends.”
“Yeah, we are,” Daniel said, quietly. “Friendship doesn’t mean I lie for you.”
“Are you serious?” Claire snapped. “Of course, you’re supposed to lie for your friends. That’s how you prove your loyalty, Daniel.”
“You always were needy and controlling, Claire, but you’ve gone too far this time,” Daniel replied. Then he looked at Mark. “And if you’d told me that you were planning to get back with her, I would’ve reminded you about the way she acted when she left you the first time.”

Claire turned to him and said, “I guess we’re finally seeing the true Daniel, and he’s no friend of yours.”
I sensed a new round of argument about to start, but I wanted no part of it.
“Keep the apron,” I said. “Keep Mark. But you don’t get my baby.”
I picked up my purse and walked out.
My marriage was over. But my baby’s future remained uncertain.
