I was already angry when my son brought home a new phone after his dad and I had agreed to wait until his birthday. Then a message popped up asking whether I’d seen it, and I realized someone was waiting for my reaction.
My 12-year-old son, Caleb, spends every other weekend with his dad, Derek.
We’ve been divorced for five years.
For the most part, we co-parent reasonably well.
Not perfectly.
No divorced couple does everything perfectly.
But we had rules.
No major schedule changes without talking first.
No expensive gifts without discussing them.
No using Caleb to carry messages between houses.
And absolutely no asking him to keep secrets from the other parent.
That last one mattered to me more than anything.
Which is why, last Sunday, when Caleb came home from Derek’s house carrying a brand-new phone, my first reaction wasn’t excitement.
It was suspicion.
He dropped his backpack beside the door.
Then he pulled the phone out of his hoodie pocket.
It was much nicer than the one we’d been planning to get him for his birthday.
“Where did that come from?”
Caleb immediately turned the screen off.
“Dad’s house.”
“I can see that.”
“Who bought it?”
He hesitated. “Dad told me not to tell you.”
I felt my jaw tighten. “Dad told you not to tell me who bought your phone?”
Caleb shrugged. “I’m not supposed to say.”
That made me furious at Derek.
Caleb had been asking for a phone for almost a year.
Derek and I had discussed it several times.
We’d finally agreed he could have one for his 13th birthday, which was three months away.
We wanted basic parental controls.
Limited social media.
Location sharing.
Nothing extreme.
Just two parents trying to delay the inevitable little computer that would eventually become attached to our son’s hand.
“Did Dad buy it?”
Caleb looked uncomfortable.
“I said I’m not supposed to tell you.”
I took a breath.
This was exactly what I did not want.
I wasn’t going to interrogate my child over something an adult had put him in the middle of.
So I said, “Okay.”
He looked relieved.
The phone joined a growing list of things.
New sneakers.
Restaurants.
A weekend trip to a theme park.
Tickets to a basketball game.
Caleb had also been spending more time at Derek’s house lately.
Not full extra weekends, exactly.
But he’d ask to go over Friday after school instead of Saturday morning.
Or stay Sunday night because Derek was taking him somewhere Monday.
At first, I thought it was good.
Caleb loved his dad.
I wanted him to enjoy his time there.
Then the expensive things started.
And slowly, I became the parent saying:
“No, we’re not ordering takeout.”
“No, you don’t need another pair of shoes.”
“No, we’re not going somewhere expensive every weekend.”
Meanwhile, Dad’s house apparently looked like a permanent vacation.
I hated thinking that way.
But I did.
That evening, Caleb asked me to help connect the phone to our Wi-Fi.
I took it from him. “What’s the passcode?”
He told me.
I opened the settings.
Before I could finish, a message appeared across the screen.
“Did your mom see the phone?”
There was no name, just a number.
I looked at Caleb. “Who’s this?”
His face changed immediately.
He grabbed the phone. “No one.”
“Someone just asked if I saw your phone.”
“It’s nothing.”
“Caleb, what is it?”
“Dad said I shouldn’t talk about it.”
That was it.
I called Derek.
He answered on the fourth ring. “What?”
“Why are you telling our son to keep things from me?”
“What are you talking about?”
“The phone.”
“Don’t make a big deal out of it.”
“You knew we agreed he wasn’t getting one yet.”
“I know.”
“Then where did it come from?”
“Can we talk about this another time?”
“No.”
I stood in my kitchen, already shaking.
“Who bought the phone?”
He exhaled. “I have to go.”
Then he hung up.
I stared at my screen.
Caleb was watching me from the doorway.
I forced my voice to stay calm. “I’ll get to the bottom of this.”
I let it go for the night.
By the next afternoon, I was angrier.
Not because of the phone itself.
Because I felt like Derek was turning our son into part of some game.
He got the trips.
The restaurants.
The expensive gifts.
And now he was teaching Caleb that Mom was the person who had to be managed.
So I drove to Derek’s house.
He opened the door and immediately looked irritated.
“You couldn’t call first?”
“I did.”
He crossed his arms.
“You hung up.”
A woman was standing in the kitchen behind him.
I’d seen her before.
Not in person.
In photos on Caleb’s tablet.
At a baseball game.
At the theme park.
Once in the background of a picture from a restaurant.
Derek noticed me looking.
“That’s Monica.”
The woman gave me an awkward smile.
“Hi.”
Derek added, “My girlfriend.”
I knew he was dating someone.
I had known her name.
I just hadn’t known it was serious enough that she was spending this much time with Caleb.
Monica looked toward the back door.
“I’ll give you two some privacy.”
She stepped outside.
I turned to Derek.
“You get to be the fun parent, right?”
He frowned. “What?”
“Trips. Sneakers. Restaurants. A new phone.”
“This is what you came here for?”
“I came because you told our son to hide something from me.”
Derek rubbed his forehead.
“I told you not to make a big deal out of it.”
“I am going to make a big deal out of an adult telling my 12-year-old to keep secrets from his mother.”
He looked tired.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
I pointed toward the kitchen.
“And apparently your girlfriend is around Caleb enough that I should’ve met her before today.”
Derek’s expression hardened. “That’s separate.”
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
I laughed. “You get to give him everything he wants, then I get to enforce the rules.”
“That’s what you think this is?”
“What else am I supposed to think?”
“I didn’t buy the phone.”
I actually laughed.
“Seriously?”
“I’m serious.”
“Then who did?”
He didn’t answer.
“You know.”
I looked toward the back door.
“Monica?”
His face gave it away.
“She bought it.”
Derek rubbed his forehead again.
“Just leave it alone.”
“No.”
“Please.”
“Why would your girlfriend buy our son a phone we specifically agreed he wasn’t getting yet?”
He said nothing.
“Why did you tell Caleb to hide it?”
“I was trying to deal with it.”
“By making him lie?”
“I didn’t tell him to lie.”
“You told him not to tell me the truth.”
Derek looked away.
I said, “Whatever game you’re playing, leave Caleb out of it.”
Then I turned and left.
I was almost at my car when I realized my keys weren’t in my hand.
I checked my purse. Nothing.
Then I remembered setting them on the table by Derek’s front door when I walked in.
I went back.
The door was still slightly open.
I pushed it wider and reached for the keys.
Then I heard Monica’s voice from the backyard.
“See? I told you it would work.”
Derek said, “Monica—”
“What? She came over, didn’t she?”
There was a pause.
Then he said, quieter, “You shouldn’t have bought Caleb that phone.”
I walked through the kitchen and pushed open the back door.
They both turned.
“What worked?” I asked.
Monica went pale.
Derek closed his eyes. “Great.”
I looked at Monica. “You wanted me to come here.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Derek said, “Don’t.”
Monica looked at him.
“No. This is exactly why we’re here.”
He shook his head. “Not like this.”
She turned back to me. “I wanted to meet you.”
I stared at her.
“You bought my son a phone worth $1,000 to meet me?”
“It didn’t cost $1,000.”
I gave her a look. “Not the point.”
She took a breath.
“I’ve been asking Derek to introduce us for months.”
I looked at him. He said nothing.
Monica continued.
“We’ve been together 14 months.”
That surprised me.
I thought maybe six.
She said, “I spend a lot of time with Caleb.”
“I can see that.”
“I told Derek that if I’m going to be this involved in his life, you should know me.”
Derek finally spoke. “I told you it wasn’t necessary.”
Monica laughed bitterly. “You told me she’d freak out.”
I turned toward him. “What?”
He said, “That’s not what I said.”
“You said she was controlling about Caleb.”
Monica looked at me.
“You said she doesn’t like anyone else doing things with him.”
Derek’s jaw tightened.
“I said co-parenting with her can be complicated.”
“You made it sound like if she met me, it would start a war.”
I felt something shift. “What exactly did he tell you about me?”
Derek said, “We’re not doing this.”
Monica ignored him. “He said you get jealous when Caleb has fun here.”
I almost laughed. “Jealous?”
“He said that’s why you complain about the trips.”
“I’ve never complained about the trips. I only ask to be told before they happen.”
Derek looked uncomfortable.
Monica frowned. “You haven’t?”
“No.”
I looked at Derek. “Seriously, why would you lie?”
Monica turned toward him. He looked away.
Then she said, “I knew it.”
“Knew what?” I asked.
She hesitated.
Then she said, “That some of what he was telling me didn’t make sense.”
She continued.
“I kept telling him that you and I should meet because I’m around Caleb all the time.”
“How often?”
Her face changed. “Pretty often.”
Derek said, “Don’t make it sound like that.”
I looked at him. “Like what?”
He rubbed his hands over his face.
Monica answered. “Sometimes Derek works on the weekends Caleb is here.”
“What does sometimes mean?”
Derek said, “I work in sales. You know that.”
“I know you sometimes answer emails on weekends, not full-time work.”
Monica said quietly, “He has been covering a new territory.”
“How often is he gone?”
She hesitated.
Derek said, “Enough.”
“Enough?”
“Some Saturdays.”
Monica said, “Most Saturdays lately.”
He glared at her.
She glared back.
I asked, “And Caleb is always with you?”
“Yes.”
I said, “Who took him to the theme park?”
Monica raised her hand slightly.
“I did.”
“The basketball game?”
“Me.”
“The sneakers?”
“I bought them.”
“So all this time I thought Derek was turning every weekend into Disneyland, and half the time he wasn’t even there.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Isn’t it?”
“I work.”
“So do I.”
He looked away.
I turned back to Monica.
“Why didn’t you just call me?”
She looked embarrassed.
“Where would I get your number?”
“Ask Derek for it.”
“I did.”
“And?”
“He wouldn’t give it to me.”
That hurt in a strange way.
Not because I needed a relationship with his girlfriend.
Because this woman was apparently caring for my child during Derek’s parenting time, and he had deliberately kept us from speaking.
Monica said, “I told him this wasn’t normal.”
Derek said, “You were overstepping.”
She laughed. “And taking care of him isn’t?”
He looked embarrassed.
My mind went back to the phone.
I said, “And the phone?”
Monica sighed. “Caleb asked me to buy it.”
Of course he did.
“He said he was tired of waiting.”
“So you bought it.”
“Yes.”
“Knowing both his parents had already said no.”
“I knew Derek had said no.”
Derek looked guilty.
“Did he not tell you we’d agreed together?”
Monica slowly shook her head.
“He told me you were the one refusing.”
Derek said, “I didn’t say it like that.”
“You absolutely did.”
“So now I’m the bad guy in both houses.”
“No.”
“Really?”
I pointed toward Monica. “She thought I was controlling.”
Then toward the kitchen. “Caleb thinks I’m the reason he couldn’t have a phone.”
Derek said nothing.
Monica rubbed her forehead. “Buying the phone was stupid.”
“Then why did you do it?”
She looked at me.
“Because I was tired of him keeping everything separate.”
I said nothing.
She continued.
“He wouldn’t introduce us. He wouldn’t let me contact you. Every time I brought it up, he said you’d make everything difficult.”
“So you decided to prove him wrong.”
“Basically.”
“By using my son.”
Her face fell.
She took a breath.
“I’m sorry that I used Caleb and the phone to create a reason for you to come over.”
I believed she meant it.
I still wasn’t ready to accept it.
Derek said, “I told her not to.”
I turned toward him.
“You told my son not to tell me, so you don’t get points.”
That evening, I talked to Caleb.
I said, “How much time do you spend with Monica when you’re at Dad’s?”
He looked nervous. “A lot.”
“More than with Dad?”
“Sometimes.”
That hurt.
Not because Monica was bad to him.
Because he’d been protecting Derek too.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Dad said you’d get mad.”
“I’m not mad at you.”
He looked at me.
“You are never responsible for managing my feelings about your dad.”
He was quiet.
I continued.
“If Dad works, tell me. If Monica takes you somewhere, tell me. If you have fun with her, tell me.”
“You won’t be upset?”
“No.”
“Even if I like her?”
“You’re allowed to like Monica.”
He looked relieved.
Then he said, “She’s nice.”
“I believe you.”
“She listens.”
I smiled. “That’s good.”
He hesitated. “Dad works a lot now.”
“I know.”
“Sometimes he comes home late.”
“Okay.”
“I don’t mind being with Monica.”
“I know.”
Derek and I talked the next day.
I told him I wasn’t asking to control what happened during his weekends.
I wasn’t asking him to stop working.
I wasn’t asking him to break up with Monica.
I said, “But if you’re regularly leaving Caleb with someone else for most of your parenting time, I need to know.”
He looked defensive. “She’s my partner.”
“Then act like she is.”
He frowned. “What does that mean?”
“It means stop hiding her.”
I leaned forward.
“You wanted credit for being the fun dad while Monica did the work.”
He shook his head. “That’s not fair.”
“Then explain the trips and the sneakers. Explain why you let me believe all of it was you.”
“I never said it was.”
“You never corrected it.”
He said, “I liked that Caleb thought weekends here were exciting.”
“And Monica made them exciting.”
“Yes.”
“While you worked.”
“Sometimes.”
“Most Saturdays lately.”
He looked tired. “Yes.”
I said, “That’s what I’m angry about.”
He wanted to be the easy parent without doing all the parenting behind it.
We changed some things after that.
Derek still has his weekends.
Monica is still around.
But now I have her number.
She has mine.
If she’s picking Caleb up, I know.
If Derek is gone most of the day, I know.
And if his work schedule means he won’t actually be available for most of a weekend, we discuss whether Caleb still wants to go or whether we adjust.
Monica returned the phone.
That part was nonnegotiable.
Caleb was furious for a bit.
Then I reminded him he was still getting one for his birthday.
He said, “But that one was better.”
I said, “Yeah, life is hard.”
He survived.
Monica apologized to me again later.
She said, “I thought forcing the issue would make Derek finally introduce us.”
“It did.”
She gave a small embarrassed smile. “Terrible plan.”
“Very, but it worked.”
“I shouldn’t have involved Caleb.”
“That’s true.”
“I know that now.”
I nodded.
That was enough.
We are not best friends.
I don’t need us to be.
But I know the woman who is spending time with my son.
And she knows I’m not some unstable ex-wife waiting to attack her.
As for Derek, we’re working on something more basic.
Honesty.
About our son.
Who took Caleb somewhere.
Who bought something.
Who is actually home.
It turns out those little facts matter.
I thought the new phone meant Derek was trying to buy our son’s affection.
I was wrong.
The truth was almost more frustrating.
He had built this version of his weekends where he was the fun parent, while Monica was quietly doing a lot of the actual work.
Then he kept her away from me because if we ever compared notes, that version would fall apart.
The phone exposed him.
Derek wanted everyone to see him as the center of Caleb’s life at his house.
In reality, someone else had been carrying a lot of that weight.
And the worst part wasn’t that Monica was helping.
It was that he taught our son to help hide it.
