Part 2 — What the Markers Revealed
Gianna read the results in my living room.
The reading was performed standing. The particular, I-insisted-on-being-present, the-presence-is-the-witnessing, the-witnessing-is-the-thing-the-demanding-required position of a woman whose demanding had produced the test and whose test had produced the results and whose results were now in the woman’s hands and the hands were the hands that demanded and the demanded was delivering.
The first page confirmed paternity. 99.998%. Bryson was Stella’s biological father. The confirmation was the answer to the question Gianna asked and the asking was the demanding and the demanding was the test and the test said yes.
Yes. The word the test provided. The word that answered the accusation. The word that said another man’s baby was incorrect and the incorrect was the word that replaced the accusation and the replacing was the first page’s function.
Gianna’s face performed the particular, the-answer-is-not-the-answer-I-expected, the-expectation-was-the-confirming-of-my-accusation, the-confirming-did-not-occur, the-not-occurring-is-the-surprise adjustment that a face produces when the face’s owner has been expecting the result the demanding was designed to produce and the expecting has been denied by the result and the denying is the adjustment the face performs.
Then Gianna turned to the second page.
The second page was the genetic marker analysis. The particular, laboratory-standard, the-lab-includes-this-automatically, the-automatically-means-the-requesting-did-not-require-the-asking data that the laboratory provides because the providing is the protocol and the protocol says the marker analysis accompanies the paternity confirmation.
The marker analysis displayed three columns. The child’s markers. The mother’s markers. The father’s markers. The three columns showed the genetic contributions each parent made and the making was the biology and the biology was the data the columns contained.
The child’s markers showed the recessive variant for red hair. The MC1R gene. The particular, well-documented, the-gene-determines-the-pigment, the-pigment-determines-the-color genetic mechanism that produces red hair when both parents carry the recessive variant and the carrying is invisible in the parents because the dominant variant is the one the parents display.
The mother’s markers — mine — showed I carried one copy of the recessive variant. The carrying was invisible. My hair was dark. The dark was the dominant. The dominant masked the recessive. The masking was the reason the carrying was invisible and the invisible was the reason the red hair in my family history was the great-aunt whose great-aunt’s red hair was the last time the recessive displayed in my lineage.
The father’s markers — Bryson’s — showed Bryson also carried one copy of the recessive variant. The carrying was also invisible. Bryson’s hair was dark. The dark was the dominant. The dominant masked the recessive.
Both parents carried the recessive. The both produced the possibility. The possibility produced Stella. Stella’s red hair was the genetics performing the displaying that both parents’ genetics carried without displaying.
This was the science. The science explained the red hair. The science explained the blue eyes. The science said the baby who did not look like the parents was the baby the parents’ invisible genetics produced.
But the marker analysis showed more.
The marker analysis included paternal lineage markers. The markers that trace the father’s genetic contribution through the Y-chromosome and through the particular, inherited, passed-from-father-to-son, the-passing-is-the-lineage, the-lineage-is-traceable markers that the laboratory identifies when the laboratory performs the analysis.
Bryson’s paternal lineage markers did not match Franco Deluca’s known genetic profile.
The laboratory’s analysis included a note. The note said the paternal markers in the subject, Bryson, were inconsistent with the stated paternal lineage. The note said the inconsistency indicated the biological father was not the individual identified as the father in the family records.
The note was the clinical language. The clinical language was the laboratory’s way of saying what the clinical language said, which was: Bryson’s biological father is not Franco.
Bryson read the note. Bryson read it twice. Bryson asked again. Quietly. With the particular, I-am-asking-my-mother, the-asking-is-the-thing-the-results-require, the-results-say-my-father-is-not-my-father, the-not-my-father-requires-the-asking insistence of a man whose insistence is performed quietly because the quiet is the shock and the shock is the thing that makes the quiet louder than the yelling would be.
Gianna sat down. Part 3 — What Gianna Told Bryson
Gianna told Bryson the story in my living room.

Franco d!ed when Bryson was sixteen. Franco’s de@th was the event. The event that Bryson grieved. The event that shaped Bryson’s adolescence. The event whose event was the losing of the father and the losing was the thing Bryson carried into adulthood.
Franco was Bryson’s father. Functionally. Completely. Emotionally.
Franco was not Bryson’s father. Genetically.
Gianna told Bryson that before she married Franco, she had a brief relationship with a man named Liam Callahan.
Liam Callahan. The name that was not Franco. The name that the DNA test’s paternal markers pointed to through the particular, genetic, the-markers-are-the-evidence, the-evidence-says-this-lineage, the-lineage-is-not-Franco’s trail that the markers produced.
Liam had red hair.

Gianna told Bryson the relationship with Liam lasted approximately two months. The two months were before Franco. The timing meant Bryson was conceived during the two months and the conceiving was performed before Gianna met Franco and the meeting of Franco was the beginning of the relationship Gianna’s life was organized around.
Gianna told Bryson she knew. She knew before she married Franco. She knew Bryson was Liam’s. She knew the biology. She chose Franco. She chose the not-telling. She chose the concealing. The choosing was performed with the particular, I-know-the-truth, the-truth-is-that-this-baby-is-Liam’s, I-am-choosing-to-raise-this-baby-with-Franco, Franco-does-not-know deliberation that a woman performs when the woman has assessed the situation and the assessing has produced the deciding and the deciding is the concealing.
Franco did not know. Franco raised Bryson for sixteen years without the knowing. The not-knowing was Gianna’s gift to Franco, or Gianna’s deception of Franco, and the two descriptions occupied the same act because the act was the concealing and the concealing can be described as either depending on the describer’s assessment and the assessment is the thing the describer’s perspective produces.
Bryson looked at the results. He looked at Gianna. He looked at the paper that said Franco was not his biological father.
The looking was the particular, my-mother-has-been-carrying-this-for-thirty-four-years, the-carrying-is-the-concealing, the-concealing-is-the-thing-I-never-knew, the-never-knowing-is-the-thing-the-looking-is-about processing that a man performs when the man’s understanding of his own origin has been restructured by a document on a table and the restructuring is being performed in front of the wife the man doubted and the doubting is the thing the restructuring is now placing beside the concealing and the two are the same act performed by two different family members across two different generations.

Part 4 — What Bryson Said to Me That Evening
Gianna left.

Bryson told me he was sorry.

I told Bryson the sorry was necessary. I told him the necessary was not the sufficient. The sufficient required more than the word. The sufficient required the understanding. The understanding that a wife who has been accused of infidelity by her mother-in-law while her husband stands silent is a wife whose trust has been damaged and the damaging requires the repairing and the repairing is more than the word sorry.
Bryson told me he understood. He told me the understanding was produced by the results. Not only the confirmation of Stella’s paternity. The confirmation of his own. The particular, the-results-told-me-two-things, the-first-was-that-Stella-is-mine, the-second-was-that-I-am-not-Franco’s, the-two-things-are-connected understanding that the results provided because the results contained both truths and the both was the thing the results delivered.

Bryson told me the doubt would not return. He told me the not-returning was the thing the results guaranteed because the results showed two things and the two things were the paternity confirmed and the hypocrisy exposed and the two together produced the particular, I-will-never-doubt-again, the-never-is-produced-by-the-seeing, the-seeing-is-that-my-mother’s-accusations-were-the-projection certainty that the results installed in the place the doubt had previously occupied.
I told Bryson the certainty was appreciated. I told him the appreciating did not repair the damage overnight. The overnight was the timeline the sorry proposed and the proposing was insufficient because the damage was the doubt and the doubt was inside the marriage and the inside requires the time the repairing demands and the demanding is the thing the time serves.
Bryson told me he would do the time. The particular, I-accept-the-duration, the-duration-is-the-repairing, the-repairing-is-performed-through-the-behavior, the-behavior-is-the-sustained commitment that a husband makes when the husband’s doubt has been demonstrated and the demonstrating requires the addressing and the addressing is the behavior the time contains.
I looked at Bryson. I looked at the results on the table. I looked toward the nursery where Stella was sleeping.
I told Bryson the red hair was beautiful.
Bryson looked at me. I told Bryson the red hair was Stella’s. Not his. Not Liam’s. Stella’s. The hair belonged to Stella. The belonging was the thing the genetics provided and the providing was the giving and the giving said the hair was the baby’s and the baby’s ownership was the thing the hair was about, not the lineage the hair contained.
Bryson smiled. The first smile since the results. The particular, small, the-crisis-is-not-resolved-but-the-smiling-is-the-beginning, the-beginning-is-the-sentence-about-the-hair smile that a face produces when the face has been holding the crisis and the sentence about the baby releases the holding slightly and the slightly is the smile.
Part 5 — What the Red Hair Taught the Family
Gianna did not visit for six weeks after the results.

Bryson asked Gianna whether Franco knew.
Gianna told Bryson Franco did not know. Franco raised Bryson for sixteen years without the knowing. The not-knowing was the condition the concealing imposed on Franco and the imposing was the thing Gianna performed and the performing was the thirty-four years.
Bryson told Gianna the concealing was the thing Gianna accused me of. He told her the accusation was the projection. He told her the projection was the thirty-four years’ product. He told her the product was the lens and the lens saw in me what the lens contained and the contained was the concealing.
Gianna was quiet. The particular, I-cannot-deny-this, the-denying-would-require-the-evidence-the-results-have-removed, the-removing-is-the-exposure silence of a woman whose defense has been eliminated by the results the woman’s own demanding produced.
Bryson told Gianna the accusation damaged his marriage. He told her the damage was the doubt. He told her the doubt was installed by years of comments and activated by the accusation and the activating produced the silence he performed instead of the defending and the not-defending was the wound and the wound was inside the marriage.
He told Gianna the wound’s repairing was his work. Not Gianna’s. The repairing was the behavior the time contained. The behavior was the sustained, daily, I-am-demonstrating-the-trust-the-doubt-denied demonstration that Bryson was performing and the performing was the repairing and the repairing was inside the marriage.
He told Gianna the relationship between Gianna and me required its own repairing. The repairing was separate from the marriage’s repairing. The separate said the two were different wounds and the different wounds required different healings and the different healings were performed by different people.
Gianna’s healing required the acknowledging. The acknowledging that the accusation was wrong. The acknowledging that the accusation was the projection. The acknowledging that the projection was produced by the concealing and the concealing was Gianna’s and the Gianna’s was the thing the acknowledging needed to address.
Gianna visited eight weeks after the results.
She came to the house. She stood in the living room where the results were read. She stood in the room where the accusation was made.
She asked to hold Stella.

She told me the baby was beautiful.

The acknowledging that said the baby was beautiful and the beautiful was the word Gianna used for Lily and the using of the word for Stella was the including and the including was the thing the refusing had denied.
She told me she was sorry.
The sorry covered the accusation. The another-man’s-baby. The demanding of the test. The years of comments. The not-ambitious. The does-Bryson-really-come-home-to-this. The holding was the particular, I-am-holding-my-daughter, the-daughter-is-confirmed, the-confirmed-is-the-results, the-results-said-yes holding of a father whose fathering has been confirmed by a document and whose confirming said 99.998% and the percent was the truth and the truth was inside the holding.
The holding was the thing the doubt had threatened. The doubt said maybe. The results said yes. The yes replaced the maybe. The replacing was the results’ gift. The gift was the certainty. The certainty was inside the holding.
The nursery was warm. The crib held the blankets. The blankets held the baby. The baby held the red hair.
The red hair held the gene. The gene held the secret. The secret held the thirty-four years. The thirty-four years held the concealing. The concealing held the irony.
The irony was the test. The test the grandmother demanded to expose the wife exposed the grandmother. The exposing was the results’ architecture. The architecture said the truth does not choose sides. The truth exposes what the truth finds. And the truth found Gianna’s concealing inside the test Gianna demanded.
The living room was quiet. The results were in a drawer. The accusation was answered. The doubt was replaced. The sorry was spoken.
The red hair was on the baby’s head. The baby was sleeping. The sleeping was the particular, newborn, the-world-is-the-crib, the-crib-is-the-safety peace that a baby holds when the baby does not know the history and the not-knowing is the innocence and the innocence is the thing the adults are responsible for protecting.
The adults were protecting. The protecting was the repairing. The repairing was the time. The time was the beginning.
The baby’s hair was red. The family’s healing was beginning. The beginning was enough.
