Part 2 — What the Box Contained
The box contained three things beneath the letter.
The first was a folder. Thick. Labeled in Ayla’s handwriting. The label said: What I Found.
The second was a smaller envelope. Sealed. Labeled: For After You Read the Folder.
The third was a photograph. Face-down. Unlabeled.
Noel sat behind his desk while I read. He did not speak. The not-speaking was the particular, attorney’s, the-client-left-instructions, the-instructions-said-let-him-read, the-reading-is-the-process, the-process-does-not-require-my-commentary silence of a lawyer whose silence was the instruction and the instruction was Ayla’s.
I opened the folder.
The folder contained a background check. Performed by a private investigator. Dated five years earlier. Dated to the month after I began visiting Ayla regularly. The month after the grocery store. The month after the twelve blocks. The month after the house stopped me and the stopping produced the shifting and the shifting produced the visiting and the visiting was the beginning the background check documented.
Ayla hired a private investigator within weeks of my first visit.
The investigator’s report was thorough. The particular, comprehensive, financial-records, employment-history, family-background, social-media-review, the-report-documents-everything investigation that a private investigator produces when the investigator’s client has requested the thorough and the thorough is the thing the client’s resources fund and the funding is unlimited because the client is Ayla and Ayla’s resources are the house and the savings and the unlimited is the condition the resources provide.
The report documented me. Kerem Yilmaz. Twenty-nine years old at the time of the report. Junior accountant. Annual salary: $38,000. Bank balance: $1,400. Credit card debt: $12,000. Student loan balance: $27,000. The particular, documented, number-by-number, this-is-the-financial-life, the-financial-life-is-the-motive portrait that the report painted and the painting was the portrait of a man whose man’s financial life was the motive the visits concealed.
The report documented my father’s stroke. The medical bills. The rehabilitation costs. The particular, this-is-why-the-son-needs-money, the-needing-is-the-motive, the-motive-is-the-visiting connection that the investigator drew between my financial situation and the timing of the visits and the drawing was the conclusion and the conclusion was the motive.
The report included a summary. Written by the investigator. The summary said: Subject began visiting client within days of learning client’s financial status. Subject’s financial situation suggests the visits are motivated by the client’s wealth. Recommend caution.
Recommend caution. Written by a professional. To Ayla. About me. Five years ago.
Ayla read the report. Ayla received the recommendation. Ayla processed the caution.
Ayla continued seeing me.
The continuing was not the mistake the recommendation cautioned against. The continuing was the decision. Ayla’s decision. Made with the information the report provided. Made with the knowing the report produced. The particular, informed, I-have-the-report, I-know-his-motive, I-am-choosing-to-continue decision of a woman whose choosing was performed with the knowledge the choosing required and the knowing did not prevent the choosing because the choosing was the thing the knowing was designed to inform, not to prevent.
Ayla chose me with her eyes open.
The folder contained more than the background check.
The folder contained a timeline. Handwritten by Ayla. The timeline documented the five years. Entry by entry. Month by month. The particular, chronological, this-is-what-Kerem-did, this-is-what-I-observed, the-observing-is-the-documenting journal that Ayla maintained across five years of a relationship she knew was motivated by her money.
The timeline’s entries were devastating.
Month 3: Kerem helped me plant the garden. He chose the flowers I mentioned I liked last week. He remembered. He always remembers. The remembering is real, even if the reason for the visiting is not.
Month 7: Kerem took me to the symphony. He did not check his phone. He listened to the music. He leaned toward me during the adagio. He was not performing. He was present. The present is real. The motive is not.
Month 14: Kerem told me about his father’s stroke. He cried. The crying was not performed. The crying was the particular, involuntary, the-grief-is-real, the-grief-produces-the-crying crying of a person who loves his father and whose loving produces the grief the stroke imposed. The grief is real. The motive is separate from the grief. The two coexist inside the same person.
Month 22: Kerem proposed after I suggested marriage. His face showed relief. The relief was not love. The relief was the calculation’s advancement. I saw the relief. I know what relief looks like versus what love looks like. I married him anyway.
I married him anyway. Written by Ayla. In the timeline. On the entry documenting the proposal. The entry that said the woman who knew the motive accepted the proposal the motive produced and the accepting was performed with the knowing and the knowing did not prevent the accepting.
Month 30: Kerem sat with me during the diagnosis. The doctor told me about the decline. Kerem held my hand. The holding was genuine. I could feel the genuine in the grip. The grip was not the calculation’s grip. The grip was the particular, human, I-am-afraid-for-you, the-afraid-is-real grip of a person whose person has been with another person for thirty months and whose thirty months have produced the caring the person did not intend to produce.
The caring the person did not intend to produce.
The sentence that was the timeline’s thesis. The thesis that Ayla documented across five years. The thesis that said the motive was the money and the money was the calculation and the calculation was the thing I performed but the performing, sustained across five years, produced something the performing did not intend.
The performing produced the caring. The caring was not planned. The caring was the byproduct. The particular, unintended, the-pretending-produces-the-real, the-real-is-the-thing-the-pretending-did-not-expect consequence that a sustained performance produces when the performance is maintained for years and the years’ maintenance converts the performing into the being because the body and the mind cannot perform the caring for five years without the performing becoming the caring.
I read the timeline. Entry by entry. Month by month. Fifty-seven entries. Across five years. Ayla documenting every visit. Every dinner. Every evening. Every moment the calculation was performing the caring and the caring was being observed by the woman the caring was directed at and the observing was the documenting and the documenting was the timeline and the timeline was in the folder and the folder was in the box and the box was on the desk.
Ayla watched me become the thing I was pretending to be.
She documented the becoming.
Part 3 — What the Sealed Envelope Said
I opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was a second letter. Shorter than the first. Written in the same handwriting. The particular, neat, shaking, determined writing of a woman whose writing was the final communication and the final was the thing the writing knew because the writing was performed during the illness and the illness was the thing the writing was performed inside of.
The letter said:
Dear Kerem. You came to me for my money. I knew this. You stayed for five years. During those five years, you planted my garden. You remembered the flowers I liked. You took me to the symphony and you leaned toward me during the adagio. You cried when you told me about your father. You held my hand when the doctor told me about the decline, and your grip was real. I am seventy-six years old and I have been married twice and I know the difference between a grip that is performing and a grip that is real. Yours became real.
I had money. I had a house. I had everything a person needs to be comfortable. I did not have the thing a person needs to be alive. The thing is the company. The company of another person. The sitting together. The talking. The driving to the restaurant. The arguing about which film to watch. The particular, daily, unremarkable, this-is-what-two-people-do-when-two-people-are-together ordinary that a life requires and that the alone does not provide.
You provided the ordinary. For five years. Whatever your reason was for starting, the providing was real. The ordinary was real. I was not alone for five years because of you. And the not-alone was the thing I wanted more than the money I had and you wanted.
Now let me tell you about the trap.
The trap is not what you think.
The trap is not the will. You will receive the house. You will receive the savings. You will receive everything the calculation was organized around. Noel has the documents. The inheritance is yours.
The trap is the box.
The box contains my knowing. The knowing that I knew. The knowing changes your memory. Before the box, you remembered a woman you deceived. After the box, you will remember a woman who knew she was being deceived and who chose the deception because the deception contained the company and the company was the thing the woman needed more than the pride the refusing would have provided.
The trap is this: you will spend the rest of your life knowing that the woman you thought you were deceiving was the woman who chose to be deceived because the deceiving produced the company and the company was the love and the love was real even though the motive was not.
You will spend the money. You will live in the house. And every room will contain the knowing.
Every room will say: she knew. She chose you anyway. She chose the pretending because the pretending became the real. And the real was the five years. And the five years were the company. And the company was the thing she wanted. And you gave it to her. And the giving was the trap.
Because you cannot un-give it. You cannot un-know that the giving was received. You cannot return to the version of the memory where you were the deceiver and she was the deceived. That version is gone. The box destroyed it. And the destruction is the trap.
The trap is not losing the money. The trap is keeping the money and knowing what the money cost. The cost was not yours. The cost was mine. I spent my pride. I spent my dignity. I spent the particular, I-know-this-man-is-here-for-my-money-and-I-am-choosing-him-anyway price that a woman pays when the woman’s loneliness exceeds the woman’s pride and the exceeding is the spending and the spending is the thing I performed for five years.
I spent my pride so you would stay. Your staying was the company. The company was the love. The love was real. The real was the trap.
Welcome to it.
With love that was always real,
Ayla
Part 4 — What the Photograph Showed
I turned over the photograph.
The photograph showed Ayla. Not the Ayla I knew. A younger Ayla. Approximately fifty. Standing beside a man. The man was tall. Dark-haired. The two were standing in front of the house. The house that stopped me. The house that was worth more than twenty years of my salary.
Beneath the photograph, in Ayla’s handwriting, was a caption.
The caption said: Emre and I, 1998. He did the same thing you did. He married me for the house. I loved him anyway. He stayed thirty-one years.
Emre. Ayla’s husband. The husband who d!ed. The husband whose de@th produced the alone the alone produced the wheelchair in the grocery store the wheelchair produced the meeting the meeting produced the walking the walking produced the house the house produced the shifting the shifting produced the calculation.
Emre married Ayla for the house.
Emre did the same thing I did.
Ayla knew because Ayla had experienced the pattern before. The pattern was the particular, a-man-sees-the-house, the-house-produces-the-calculation, the-calculation-produces-the-visiting, the-visiting-produces-the-marriage pattern that Ayla had observed twice because the pattern was performed twice and the performing was performed by two different men across two different decades and the two were connected by the house and the house was the thing the pattern was organized around.
Ayla recognized the pattern when I performed it because the pattern was the same pattern Emre performed and Emre’s performing was the first and my performing was the second and the first’s recognition informed the second’s recognition and the informing was the experience and the experience was the thirty-one years.
Emre married Ayla for the house. Emre stayed thirty-one years. Thirty-one years of the performing that became the being. Thirty-one years of the calculation that became the marriage. Thirty-one years of the company the calculation produced and the producing was the thing Ayla valued more than the motive the calculation was based on.
Emre loved Ayla. Eventually. The eventually that is the performing’s conversion. The conversion that the sustained performing produces when the performing is maintained across years and the years convert the performing into the being and the being is the loving.
Ayla knew the conversion because the conversion was Emre. Emre was the evidence. Emre was the first man who came for the house and stayed for the woman and the staying was the conversion and the conversion was the thing Ayla had witnessed and the witnessing was the experience the second performing activated.
When Ayla met me at the grocery store, she saw the pattern’s beginning. The twelve blocks. The house stopping me. The shifting. The beginning of the calculation. Ayla saw the beginning because Ayla had seen the beginning before and the before was Emre and the before’s recognition informed the seeing and the seeing said this man is doing what Emre did.
Ayla did not prevent the pattern. Ayla permitted the pattern. The permitting was the choosing. The choosing was the decision Ayla made with the experience Emre provided, which was the experience that said the pattern produces the calculation and the calculation produces the visiting and the visiting produces the company and the company, sustained across years, produces the conversion and the conversion is the loving.
Ayla chose me the way Ayla chose Emre. With the knowing. With the accepting. With the particular, I-know-the-motive, I-accept-the-motive, I-accept-the-motive-because-the-motive-produces-the-company-and-the-company-is-the-thing-I-need wisdom of a woman who had lived long enough to know that the motive is not the thing and the thing is the company and the company does not require the pure motive the romantic stories demand.
The romantic stories demand the pure motive. The pure motive is the loving-without-the-calculation. The pure is the standard the stories set. Ayla’s standard was different. Ayla’s standard said the company is the thing and the company is produced by the presence and the presence is produced by the motive and the motive’s purity is not the condition the company requires.
The company requires the presence. The presence was provided. The providing was real. The motive was not. And the not was the thing Ayla accepted because the accepting was the wisdom and the wisdom was the experience Emre provided.
Part 5 — What the Trap Built
I sat in Noel’s office for a long time after reading the letters and the timeline and the caption beneath the photograph.
Noel told me the will was straightforward. The house was mine. The savings were mine. The investments were mine. The particular, comprehensive, every-asset, the-estate-is-yours distribution that a will produces when the will’s beneficiary is the surviving spouse and the surviving is the condition the distributing requires.
Noel told me the estate’s total value was approximately $2.8 million. The house. The savings. The investments. The particular, accumulated, Ayla-and-Emre-built-this-across-thirty-one-years wealth that two people produce when the producing is the earning and the managing and the particular, decades-long, conservative, the-money-grows-because-the-money-is-managed discipline that Ayla and Emre maintained across the thirty-one years the marriage contained.
$2.8 million. Directed to me. By a woman who knew I married her for the money.
The trap was the knowing. The knowing was the sentence: she knew. Spoken inside every room of the house I now owned. Spoken inside every dollar of the savings I now held. Spoken inside every morning I would wake in the bedroom where Ayla slept and where Ayla knew and where the knowing was the air the bedroom held.
The trap was not the loss. The trap was the keeping. The keeping of the money. The keeping of the house. The keeping of the $2.8 million the calculation was organized around. The keeping was the trap because the keeping was the receiving and the receiving was the thing a man who calculated for five years wanted and the wanting was now fulfilled and the fulfillment was the thing the trap occupied.
The fulfillment was poisoned by the knowing. Not poisoned the way a substance poisons. Poisoned the way the knowing poisons. The knowing that the woman I calculated against was the woman who knew I was calculating and who chose the calculating because the calculating produced the company and the company was the love and the love was real.
I went home. To the house. Ayla’s house. My house now. The house that stopped me five years ago. The house whose stopping produced the shifting and the shifting produced the calculation and the calculation produced the five years and the five years produced the box and the box produced the knowing and the knowing was the trap.
I walked through the rooms. The kitchen where Ayla made tea. The living room where we watched films and argued about which film to watch. The garden where I planted the flowers she mentioned she liked and the planting was the remembering and the remembering was the entry in the timeline that said he remembers, he always remembers, the remembering is real even if the reason for the visiting is not.
The real. The word Ayla used. The word that was the timeline’s refrain. The real that existed inside the not-real. The real that the performing produced. The real that the calculation did not intend to produce and that the producing was the five years’ gift to a woman whose woman accepted the gift’s container because the container held the gift and the gift was the company and the company was the real.
I sat in the garden. Beside the flowers I planted. The flowers that were the remembering. The remembering that was real.
I thought about my father. The stroke. The bills. The reason I performed the calculation. The reason that was the motive. The motive that Ayla knew about because the investigator’s report documented the stroke and the bills and the motive was the thing the report identified and the identifying was the thing Ayla received and the receiving was the knowing.
Ayla knew about my father. Ayla knew the motive was the father’s bills. Ayla knew the calculation was produced by the needing and the needing was the father and the father was the thing the money was for.
I looked at the house. I looked at the garden. I looked at the flowers.
I understood the trap.
The trap was not the knowing. The trap was the gratitude. The particular, I-received-what-I-calculated-for, the-receiving-was-the-thing-I-wanted, the-wanting-was-fulfilled, but-the-fulfillment-now-includes-the-knowing-that-the-giving-was-performed-by-a-woman-who-knew-and-who-chose-and-who-accepted-and-who-loved gratitude that a man experiences when the man’s calculation has been completed and the completing was performed by the person the calculation was directed at and the person knew and the knowing did not prevent the completing because the knowing was the choosing and the choosing was the loving and the loving was the giving.
Ayla gave me the money I calculated for. Ayla gave me the house I stopped for. Ayla gave me the five years I performed for. And the giving was performed by a woman who knew and who chose and who accepted the performing because the performing produced the company and the company was the thing the woman needed more than the pride the refusing would have provided.
The gratitude was the trap. The gratitude was the thing I would carry. Not the guilt. The guilt was the thing I expected to carry. The guilt of the calculating. The guilt of the pretending. The guilt of the performing. The guilt was the thing the box could have produced.
But the box did not produce the guilt. The box produced the gratitude. Because the box said Ayla knew and Ayla chose and Ayla accepted and Ayla loved. And the loving was real. And the real said the guilt was not the thing the box was designed to produce. The box was designed to produce the understanding.
The understanding was: Ayla was not the victim. Ayla was the architect. Ayla chose the calculating man because the choosing produced the company. Ayla accepted the motive because the accepting produced the presence. Ayla permitted the performance because the permitting produced the five years. And the five years were the company. And the company was the love. And the love was real.
The architect chose the builder. The builder thought he was building for himself. The architect knew the builder was building for both of them. And the building was the thing the architect wanted. And the wanting was the trap. Because the wanting was fulfilled by the builder’s calculating and the calculating produced the building and the building was the five years and the five years were the thing the architect designed.
On quiet evenings, I sat in the garden.
The garden Ayla watched me plant. The garden whose flowers were the remembering. The remembering that was real.
The house was behind me. The house that stopped me. The house that was now mine. The house whose rooms contained the knowing and the knowing was the sentence: she knew.
She knew. She chose. She loved. She left the box.
The box was the trap. The trap was the gratitude. The gratitude was the carrying. The carrying was the rest of my life.
The garden was quiet. The flowers were blooming. The house was mine. The knowing was mine. The carrying was mine.
Ayla’s letter was in the desk drawer. The timeline was beside it. The photograph was on the mantel. Emre and Ayla, 1998. He did the same thing. She loved him anyway. Thirty-one years.
The pattern. The house. The calculation. The company. The conversion. The love.
The trap was the love. The love was real. The real was the trap.
The garden held the flowers. The house held the knowing. The box held the understanding.
