Part 2 — What the Documents Contained
My mother picked up the first page from the tray table.
The reading was performed standing. Not sitting. Standing. The particular, I-have-not-been-invited-to-sit, the-not-inviting-is-the-atmosphere, the-atmosphere-says-stand position of a woman whose daughter has not offered the chair and the not-offering is the communication and the communication says the reading will be performed from the position the not-offering assigns.

Lake house. Removed.
Education trusts. Removed.
Board seats. Removed.
Emergency access. Removed.

I told her the signing was performed at 8:15 PM, approximately six hours after the first of the nine calls I made to a phone she did not answer because the phone was in a pocket that was in a house where the phone’s owner was arranging throw pillows.
My father took the summary from my mother’s hand. He read it. The reading was performed with the particular, engineer’s-precision, line-by-line, number-by-number, I-am-assessing-the-damage assessment that a man whose man’s training was engineering applies to every document the man reads and whose reading produces the assessment and the assessment is the number and the number is the thing the man’s training calculates.

$12.65 million. Removed. By a woman in a hospital bed. Between 8:15 PM and 10:03 PM. They arrived at 10:03 PM. With coffee. The coffee was the two-hour gap. The gap was the thing between the coming the nine calls requested and the arriving the parents performed. The gap contained the driving and the leaving-Lauren’s and the stopping-for-coffee and the particular, unhurried, the-pace-is-the-message, the-message-is-that-the-urgency-your-daughter-described-is-not-the-urgency-we-are-performing pace that the two hours represented.
My father set the summary on the tray table.
He told me I was overreacting.
Overreacting. The word a parent uses when the parent’s child has responded to the parent’s behavior with a response the parent did not expect and the not-expecting requires the word that converts the response into the excess the word implies.
I told my father overreacting was a word that required a reaction to precede it and the reaction was the nine calls and the nine calls were the reaction and the reaction was proportional to the stimulus and the stimulus was the not-answering and the not-answering was the thing the reaction was reacting to.
I told my father the overreacting was the summary. The summary was the reaction. The reaction was proportional.
Julian stood beside the window. Julian did not speak. Julian’s not-speaking was the particular, attorney’s, the-client-is-speaking, the-attorney’s-role-is-the-presence, the-presence-is-the-authority silence that an attorney maintains when the attorney’s client is delivering the information the attorney’s documents support and the supporting is performed through the presence rather than through the speaking.
My mother told me this was not fair.
Fair. The word a person uses when the person’s expectation has been denied and the denying is classified as the unfairness because the expectation was the standard the person was operating inside and the standard’s violation is the unfairness the word describes.
I told my mother fair was a word that required the examining. I told her the examining included the nine calls. The examining included the voicemails. The examining included the text that asked is this urgent. The examining included the video of the lamp and the pillows. The examining included the twenty-four critical hours during which the parents were informed and the informed did not produce the coming and the not-coming was the thing the examining found and the finding was the evidence and the evidence said the fair was not the parents’ word to use because the parents’ behavior was the thing the fair was measuring and the measuring said the behavior was the unfair and the unfair was the parents’ and the parents’ unfair was the thing the documents addressed.
I told my mother fair was the surgeon who operated on me at 4 AM. Fair was Marisol who adjusted my IV. Fair was Julian who drove to the hospital at 8:00 PM because a woman he represented called from a hospital bed. Fair was the responding. The responding was the fair. The not-responding was the unfair. And the unfair was the thing the nine calls documented.
Part 3 — What Lauren Said When She Found Out
Lauren arrived at the hospital the following morning.
Not because Lauren was concerned. Because my mother called Lauren at 11:00 PM, approximately one hour after the documents were read, and the calling was the particular, I-need-to-tell-you-what-happened, the-happened-affects-you, you-need-to-know urgency that a mother performs when the mother’s discovery requires the sharing and the sharing is directed at the other daughter because the other daughter’s distributions were also removed and the removing requires the telling.
Lauren walked into my room at 9:15 AM. She was wearing the particular, drove-here-quickly, did-not-take-the-time-for-the-usual-presentation, the-presentation-is-secondary-to-the-arriving appearance of a woman whose arriving is motivated by the information the arriving is responding to and the responding does not accommodate the presenting.
Lauren told me Mom told her everything.
I told Lauren Mom told her the documents. I told her Mom did not tell her the everything because the everything included the nine calls and the voicemails and the text and the video and the lamp and the pillows and the particular, comprehensive, every-piece-of-evidence, the-evidence-is-the-everything totality that the documents were based on and the basing was the thing the documents contained.
Lauren told me the will was not fair.
Fair. The same word. Deployed by the second family member. The word whose word was the expectation’s complaint performed through the vocabulary the expectation provides.
I told Lauren the video was not fair. I told her the video showed our parents carrying a lamp and arranging throw pillows in her new house while I was in a hospital bed with monitors recording the heartbeat a delivery truck almost stopped.
I told Lauren the video was posted at 6:40 PM. I told her the posting was performed while the critical hours were being performed. I told her the critical was the word the doctor used and the word meant the body was deciding and the deciding was the thing the monitors were tracking and the tracking was the thing the parents were informed of and the informed did not prevent the driving-to-Lauren’s and the carrying and the arranging and the posting.
I told Lauren the video said she could not have done today without Mom and Dad.
Could not have done today without Mom and Dad. The sentence Lauren spoke into a camera while turning toward the parents whose turning was the displaying and the displaying was the pride and the pride was directed at the parents and the parents were the people the pride celebrated and the celebrating was performed while the other daughter was pressing the call button.
I told Lauren the sentence was the priority. The sentence said Lauren could not have done the unpacking without Mom and Dad. The sentence said the unpacking was the thing Mom and Dad were needed for. The sentence said the needing was the unpacking and the unpacking was the priority and the priority was the thing Mom and Dad performed while the other needing, the hospital needing, the nine-calls needing, was the needing Mom and Dad did not perform.
Lauren told me the unpacking was planned weeks earlier. She told me the parents committed to the unpacking before the accident. She told me the accident’s timing was not her fault.
I told Lauren the timing was not the issue. The timing was the circumstance. The response to the circumstance was the issue. The response was the choosing. The choosing was performed by the parents when the parents received the information about the accident and the surgery and the critical hours and the receiving produced the choice and the choice was the continuing-to-Lauren’s rather than the coming-to-the-hospital and the continuing was the choosing and the choosing was the thing the documents responded to.
I told Lauren a parent who receives the information that one daughter is in a hospital with critical injuries and whose receiving produces the continuing to the other daughter’s house to arrange throw pillows is a parent whose choosing has been demonstrated and whose demonstrating is the evidence and the evidence is the thing the documents are based on.
Lauren was quiet.
Then Lauren told me something I did not expect.
Lauren told me she called Mom that morning. Lauren told me she called Mom at 7:00 AM, the morning of the unpacking, the morning after my surgery. Lauren told me she called Mom to say the unpacking could wait. Lauren told me she told Mom to go to the hospital.
I looked at Lauren.
Lauren told me Mom said the hospital had it under control. Mom said the doctors were monitoring me. Mom said there was nothing the parents could do at the hospital that the hospital was not already doing. Mom said the unpacking was the commitment and the commitment should be honored.
Mom said the unpacking was the commitment. The commitment that should be honored. Spoken about throw pillows. While the other commitment, the commitment to the daughter in the hospital, was the commitment Mom assessed as under control.
Under control. The phrase that tells a daughter her emergency is managed by professionals and the managing does not require the parents because the requiring is the thing the professionals are performing and the professionals’ performing eliminates the parents’ need to perform.
The professionals were performing. The monitors were performing. The IV was performing. The performing was the medical. The medical was the thing the professionals provided.
The parents were supposed to provide the other thing. The presence. The holding of the hand. The sitting beside the bed. The particular, parental, I-am-here, the-here-is-the-thing-the-medical-cannot-provide, the-providing-is-mine thing that a parent performs when the parent’s child is in a hospital and the hospital provides the medical and the parent provides the being-there and the being-there is the thing no professional can replace.
No professional replaced the being-there. Marisol adjusted the IV. Marisol did not hold my hand. Marisol was the medical. The being-there was the parents’. And the parents’ being-there was at Lauren’s house because Mom said the hospital had it under control.
Lauren told me she felt guilty.
I told Lauren the guilty was appreciated but misdirected. The misdirecting was the thing that placed the guilty on Lauren when the guilty belonged on the parents because the parents were the people who made the choice and the choice was the continuing and the continuing was the thing the guilty should address.
I told Lauren her distributions were removed not because of Lauren. The removing was based on the pattern. The pattern was the prioritizing. The prioritizing was the arrangement the family maintained in which Lauren was the center and the center received the parents and the orbit, which was me, received the funding.
The arrangement said: Miranda funds. Lauren receives. The parents orbit Lauren. Miranda orbits the funding.
The arrangement was the thing the will previously participated in because the will’s distributions directed the funding to the people the arrangement placed at the center. The will funded the parents. The will funded Lauren. The will’s funding was the continuation of the orbiting the arrangement required and the requiring was the thing the nine calls demonstrated was not reciprocated.
The nine calls were the reciprocity’s test. The test said: if the funder calls from a hospital bed, does the center respond? The center did not respond. The not-responding was the test’s result. The result was the documents.
Part 4 — What the Redirecting Produced
Julian and I finalized the revised will two weeks after the hospital.
The finalizing was performed at Julian’s office. Not the hospital. The hospital was the location of the drafting. The office was the location of the finalizing. The distinction matters because the drafting was performed under the conditions the hospital imposed, the IV and the monitors and the particular, acute, I-am-still-in-the-critical-period urgency that the drafting was performed inside, and the finalizing was performed under the conditions the recovery provided, the particular, discharged, at-home, the-body-is-healing, the-healing-permits-the-sitting clarity that the recovery produced.

The foundation whose foundation’s board seats the parents previously occupied and whose occupying was the thing the parents’ social circle observed and whose observing produced the status the seats provided. The seats were removed. The funding was added. The foundation received the parents’ distribution.
The $4.1 million previously designated for Lauren was redirected to a scholarship fund. The fund was established through the foundation. The fund was named the Marisol Reyes Medical Scholarship. Named for the nurse who adjusted my IV and called Julian when I asked. Named for the person who responded when the calling was performed and whose responding was the thing the parents’ not-responding was measured against.
Marisol. The nurse whose name was on a scholarship fund that would provide medical education to students whose students’ education would produce the nurses whose nurses would perform the responding the scholarship’s name honored.
The scholarship was the redirecting’s expression. The redirecting said: the money the parents and the sister would have received is now directed at the person who responded when the parents and the sister did not. The directing was the honoring. The honoring was performed through the naming. The naming was the permanent, documented, every-scholarship-recipient-will-know-the-name evidence that the responding was the thing the naming valued and the valuing was the thing the naming performed.
The lake house was retained. Not sold. Not transferred. Retained. The retaining was the keeping. The keeping was performed by me. The keeping said the lake house was mine and the mine was the thing the will previously designated for the parents and the designating was removed and the removing meant the lake house remained the thing it had always been, which was mine, and the mine was the thing the parents’ August vacations were performed inside and the performing was now performed at the invitation the parents would need to request and the requesting was the thing the previous will did not require and the revised will did.
The education trusts for Lauren’s future children were dissolved. The funds were redirected to a general education endowment at the foundation. The endowment would fund medical education for students whose students were not related to Lauren and whose not-related was the condition the endowment served because the endowment was the redirecting and the redirecting said the funding was no longer directed at the family’s future children but at the world’s future nurses.
The board seats were filled. Not by my parents. By two people I selected. The first was Dr. Elena Vasquez, the surgeon who performed my operation. The second was Marisol Reyes, the nurse whose nurse I named the scholarship for. The two people whose responding was the thing the nine calls needed and whose needed was met by the two people and whose two people were now seated on the board the parents previously occupied.
The redirecting was not punishment. The redirecting was the response. The response to the nine calls. The response to the voicemails. The response to the text. The response to the video. The response to the lamp and the pillows and the coffee and the 10:03 PM arrival.
The response said: the funding follows the responding. The responding was performed by Marisol and Dr. Vasquez. The funding followed them.
Part 5 — What the Nine Calls Built
My parents did not contact me for six weeks after the hospital.
The six weeks were the particular, stunned, processing, the-processing-requires-the-silence, the-silence-is-the-only-response-the-processing-permits duration that two people require when the two people have been removed from a $12.65 million distribution and the removing was performed by the daughter the two people did not answer when the daughter called nine times from a hospital bed.
The silence ended because the silence was unsustainable. A parent whose child is alive and whose alive is the condition the delivery truck almost ended is a parent whose silence is performing the thing the silence is about, which is the absence, and the absence is the thing the nine calls were about and the about is the thing the silence is now repeating and the repeating is the thing the parent eventually recognizes and the recognizing ends the silence.
My mother called. She told me she wanted to talk. She told me the talking was not about the will. The talking was about the hospital. The talking was about the nine calls.
She told me she was sorry.
The sorry was different from the apologies I had received during the six weeks of silence, which were no apologies because the six weeks contained no contact and the no-contact contained no apologies. The sorry was the first. The first sorry. Spoken by a mother. About the nine calls. Delivered through the phone that did not answer the nine calls and that was now performing the answering the nine calls requested.
She told me the sorry covered the not-answering. She told me the not-answering was the choosing and the choosing was wrong. She told me the wrong was the particular, I-knew-you-were-in-the-hospital, I-knew-the-hours-were-critical, I-chose-to-go-to-Lauren’s, the-choosing-was-the-wrong, the-wrong-is-the-thing-the-sorry-addresses acknowledgment that a mother performs when the mother has examined the choosing and the examining has produced the finding and the finding is that the choosing was wrong.
She told me the sorry also covered the text. The is this urgent. She told me the text was the worst thing she had ever sent. She told me the sending was performed without the thinking the sending required and the not-thinking was the condition the text was produced inside and the condition was the particular, Lauren’s-house-is-the-priority, the-priority-does-not-include-the-examining, the-not-examining-produces-the-text autopilot that the arrangement maintained and that the maintaining produced the text because the text was the arrangement’s product and the arrangement said Lauren’s needs were the current activity and the current activity’s interrupting required the justification and the justification was the question is this urgent.
The question was the arrangement’s voice. The arrangement asked the question. The arrangement assessed the daughter’s call as the potential interruption. The arrangement demanded the justification the word urgent provided. And the arrangement’s demanding was the thing the sorry was addressing because the arrangement was the thing the sorry was about.
I told my mother the sorry was heard. I told her the hearing did not restore the distributions. The distributions were the consequence. The consequence was the documents. The documents were the thing the nine calls produced. And the producing was the thing the sorry could not reverse because the reversing was the undoing and the undoing was not available because the doing was performed and the performing was the signing and the signing was the legal act the documents contained.
I told my mother the distributions were not the relationship. The distributions were the funding. The funding was the thing the family expected from me. The relationship was the thing the family owed me. The two were separate. The separation was the thing the nine calls demonstrated because the nine calls requested the relationship, the coming, the being-there, and the nine calls received the funding’s management instead, the voicemails and the silence and the text that assessed the coming’s urgency against the current activity’s priority.
I told my mother the relationship could continue. The continuing was the thing the sorry made possible. The sorry opened the continuing. But the continuing would be performed without the funding because the funding was the thing the family confused with the relationship and the confusing was the thing the nine calls exposed.
My mother asked me whether she could visit.
I told her yes.
She visited. The following Saturday. She sat beside my bed at home. Not the hospital bed. The home bed. The bed where the recovery was being performed. The recovery that the twenty-four critical hours had been the beginning of and that the beginning was now the middle and the middle was the healing and the healing was the thing the body was performing.
Mom sat beside the bed. She held my hand. The holding was the thing the nine calls requested. The holding was the being-there. The being-there was the thing the hospital needed and the hospital did not receive and the not-receiving was the thing the nine calls documented and the documenting produced the documents and the documents produced the consequence and the consequence was the thing the sorry was about.
The holding was late. The holding was forty-eight days late. The forty-eight days were the distance between the nine calls and the Saturday and the distance was the lateness and the lateness was the thing the holding arrived inside.
But the holding arrived. The arriving was the thing the nine calls could not produce and the sorry produced and the producing was the thing the sorry provided and the providing was the beginning.
Not the beginning of the funding. The beginning of the relationship.
On quiet evenings, during the recovery, I sat at the kitchen table.
The table where the phone was charged. The phone that made the nine calls. The phone whose phone contained the voicemails the nine calls produced and the voicemails were saved and the saving was the documenting and the documenting was the record and the record was the thing the phone held.
I did not delete the voicemails. The voicemails were the nine calls’ evidence. The evidence was the thing the documents were based on. The evidence was also the reminder. The reminder of the choosing. The choosing that was wrong. The wrong that produced the sorry. The sorry that produced the visiting. The visiting that produced the holding.
The chain was the nine calls’. The nine calls built the chain. The chain connected the calling to the not-answering to the documenting to the lawyering to the removing to the sorry to the holding.
The holding was at the end of the chain. The holding was the thing the chain was building toward. The building was not designed. The building was the product of the responding and the not-responding and the consequences the two produced.
Marisol’s scholarship funded its first recipient the following spring. A nursing student named Daniela Cruz. Twenty-two years old. First in her family to attend college. The particular, this-is-what-the-redirecting-produces, the-producing-is-the-student, the-student-is-the-future product that a scholarship produces when the scholarship’s funding is directed at the education and the education produces the nurse and the nurse will perform the responding the scholarship’s name honors.
Daniela wrote me a letter. The letter thanked me for the scholarship. The letter described Daniela’s goals. The letter said Daniela wanted to be the kind of nurse who made patients feel less alone.
Less alone. The phrase that connected the scholarship to the nine calls. The nine calls were the alone. The alone was the thing the nine calls were performed inside. The scholarship was the thing the alone produced through the chain the alone activated. And the scholarship’s recipient wanted to reduce the alone for future patients whose patients’ alone would be the thing the nursing would address.
The nursing would address the alone. The addressing was the thing the nine calls needed and the thing Marisol provided and the thing the scholarship honored and the thing Daniela would perform.
The chain was the nine calls’. The nine calls built everything.
The kitchen was quiet. The phone was charged. The voicemails were saved. The scholarship was funding. The recovery was proceeding.
The holding was late. The holding arrived. The arriving was the thing the sorry produced. The producing was the relationship. The relationship was the thing the funding was not.
The table held the tea. The phone held the voicemails. The foundation held the scholarship. The body held the healing.
