Part 2 — What Marcus Had Been Doing for Twenty Years
I told Mom to sit down.

Mom told Marcus the pride was hers. She told him the pride’s ownership meant the decision about the money was also hers. She told him the decision was taken from her by the anonymity and the anonymity was the thing that prevented the deciding and the preventing was the thing the respecting produced.
She told Marcus the respecting that takes the decision from the person being respected is not respecting. It is managing. And the managing was performed for twenty years without her knowledge and the without-her-knowledge was the condition the managing required and the requiring was the thing the trust’s terms enforced.
Marcus told Mom she was right. He told her the managing was the love’s error. The love was genuine. The error was the method. The method, the anonymity, the trust, the institutional channels, was the love expressed through the silence and the silence was the thing the boy at seventeen installed and the man at fifty-five maintained and the maintaining was the error’s duration and the duration was too long.
Mom told Marcus twenty years was too long to love someone in silence.
Marcus told her thirty-six years was longer.

I sat at the table. I watched my mother and the man whose $400 per month had funded the chain that raised me.
