Vanessa folded her napkin and reached for her purse, while Daniel prepared to leave. They assumed I would quietly follow them out, grateful that I had been allowed a seat at their table.

“No.”

The answer hurt more than Vanessa’s remarks. She had never claimed to love me, but Daniel had.
I nodded slowly.
“I do.”
Vanessa stepped in quickly, insisting she was only joking. She said she never wanted to hurt me and that she had not expected things to become so serious.
