I’d later learn that Brandon had been the one who came with me to the hospital after the accident.

I shrugged and immediately regretted it because my ribs screamed.
“The doctor said maybe a week. Maybe longer.”
“Ten days?”
“I don’t know, Brandon.”
He nodded.
At the time, I thought he was scared.
Looking back, I remember exactly what happened when I said I might be there for more than a week.
His shoulders relaxed.
Only slightly.
But they did.
Twenty minutes later, he left.
“I’ll come tomorrow,” he promised.
He didn’t.
The next day, I received a text.
“Hope you’re feeling better. Rest.”
That was it.
No visit. No phone call.
On day three, he wrote, “How are you doing today?”
I answered, “Still here. They haven’t removed the chest tube yet.”
His reply came almost immediately.
“Damn. Take it easy.”

Day five, “Any idea when they’re letting you out?”
I should have noticed the pattern.
But I was exhausted, medicated, and frightened.

I laughed, which hurt badly enough that I made her apologize.

Although somewhere in my head, she was permanently seven whenever something bad happened.
The first time she visited, she stood beside my bed trying desperately not to cry.
I held out my hand.
“Hey, sweetheart,” I said.

“You okay?”
She nodded.

“Mom.”
I smiled.

The doctor finally cleared me to go home.
My mother offered to pick me up, but she had an appointment she’d already postponed twice because of me.
Kayla was working.
“Brandon will come,” I told them.
I believed it when I said it.
I called him from my hospital room.
Voicemail.
Again, while waiting for discharge papers.
Voicemail.
One final time from the lobby.
Straight to voicemail.
No text. Nothing.
I took a cab home alone, still moving slowly, one hand pressed against my ribs whenever the car hit a bump.
I was angry by then.
I had spent ten days explaining Brandon to everybody.
To my mother.

To nurses who casually asked whether my fiancé would be taking me home.

I paid the driver, dragged my overnight bag toward the building, and unlocked the apartment.

“Mom.”

“What are you doing here?” I asked her.
She didn’t smile back.
She took my hand before I’d even set down my bag.
“I think you need to see this. Let’s go upstairs.”
Something in her voice frightened me.
“Where’s Kayla?” I asked.
“Upstairs.”
“Is Brandon here?”
“No.”
That single word was enough.
Lily led me up to the second floor.
Every stair pulled at my ribs.
Halfway up, I noticed something missing.
The framed photograph from the landing.
Brandon and me at the lake.
Gone.
At the top, I saw a pale rectangle on the wall where another picture had hung.
“Lily?”
She kept walking.
Straight to our bedroom door.
I pushed it open.
And froze completely in the doorway.
Half the bedroom was empty.
Not messy. Empty.
Brandon’s dresser drawers were pulled open.
There was nothing inside them.
His side of the closet was bare except for three empty hangers.
His shoes were gone.

So was the expensive speaker system he’d bought the previous Christmas.

And sitting in the middle of our bed was Kayla.

She stood when she saw me.
“Before you say anything, sit down.”
I stared at the empty closet.
“Where’s Brandon?”
Kayla looked at Lily.

“Sit down, Nic.”
“No.”
My voice sounded strange.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
“What happened to our room?”
Kayla crossed toward me.
“Nicole—”
“Did he leave me?” I asked.
Nobody answered.
And that was an answer.
I gripped the doorframe.
The physical pain was suddenly nothing compared with the humiliation.
Ten days. I had spent ten days in intensive care wondering why my fiancé couldn’t find 40 minutes to sit beside me.
Apparently he’d been busy packing.
I looked at Lily.
“Did you know?”
Her face crumpled.
“Not at first.”
“What does that mean?”
Kayla stepped between us.
“Don’t do this standing up.”
This time, I listened.
She helped me onto the edge of the bed.
My eyes landed on the papers.
“Is there someone else?”
Kayla hesitated.
“Yes.”
I laughed once.
It came out like a cough.
“Of course there is.”
“Mom—”
“It’s okay.”
It wasn’t.
“Who?”
“Her name is Vanessa,” Kayla said.
“Do I know her?”
“No.”
“How long?”
“We don’t know.”
I looked around the half-empty bedroom.
“So that’s it?”
Kayla’s expression told me it wasn’t.
“What?”
“That’s not why we’re here.”
“What could possibly be worse?”
Lily sat beside me.
Her hands were shaking.
“I called Aunt Kayla this morning.”
“Why?”
“Because he came back last night.”
“Brandon?”
She nodded.
“He thought I was at Dad’s.”
Lily sometimes spent weekends with her father. Brandon knew that.
“But you were here?”
“I came back because I forgot my school tablet.”
She’d entered through the downstairs door and heard Brandon upstairs.
He wasn’t alone.
A woman was with him.
Vanessa.
“I didn’t go up,” Lily said. “I stayed by the stairs.”
My stomach turned.
“What did you hear?”
“They were arguing.”
“About me?”
She nodded.
“About money.”
Kayla picked up one of the papers.
“Lily called me afterward.”
I looked at my daughter.
“You should have called me.”
“You were in the ICU.”
“Still.”
“He told me not to.”
I went still.
“Who?”
“Brandon.”
“When?”
Lily looked toward Kayla.
“Mom, he’s been taking stuff out all week.”
“All week?”
“The second day you were in the hospital, he took two suitcases.”
She’d asked where he was going.
Brandon told her he was moving some things into storage because the apartment needed “less clutter” before I came home.
On day four, he took boxes.
On day six, the television.
Then framed photographs.
“He told me not to tell you because you’d get stressed and it could make you worse.”
I couldn’t speak.
“He said he was handling things for you.”
Kayla sat beside me.
“That isn’t all.”
She turned my laptop around.
My banking page was open.
Several transfers had been highlighted.

Another $2,500.
Money had been moved from the joint account that Brandon and I used for rent, bills, and wedding expenses.
“Eight thousand?”
“Almost nine.”
“When?”
“Over the last nine days.”
My mouth went dry.
“He was stealing from me while I was in the hospital?”
“We’ve already called the bank. They froze what’s left.”
I stared at the screen.
Something still bothered me.
If Brandon had met someone while I was hospitalized, none of this made sense.
People didn’t meet someone, start an affair, sign a lease, move half a home, and plan an escape in ten days.
“When did this start?”
Kayla looked at Lily.
My daughter stood.
“I found something.”
She left the room and returned with a thin folder.

“He came by while Grandma took me to get clothes. I saw him leaving when we got back.”

My voice broke.
“He wanted to know how much time he had.”

Maybe some part of him had wanted to see whether I was alive.
I’d like to believe that.

Suddenly every text changed meaning.
“How are you doing today?” wasn’t concern.
“Any idea when they’re letting you out?” wasn’t concern either.
He had been checking the clock.
I picked up my phone.
Kayla touched my wrist.
“You don’t have to do this now.”
“Yes, I do,” I said.
I called Brandon.
He answered on the fourth ring.
“Nic?”
The relief in his voice made me hate him.
“Where are you?”
Silence.
“Nicole, I was going to call.”
“Where are you?”
“Can we talk when you’re home?”
“I am home.”
Another silence.
Longer this time.
“Oh.”
I almost laughed.
“Yes. Oh.”
“Listen, this isn’t how I wanted you to find out.”
“Which part?”
“Nicole—”
“Vanessa? The empty bedroom? The nine thousand dollars?”
He exhaled.
“I can explain the money.”
“Great. Start with the lease.”
Nothing.
I opened the folder.
“Signed 14 days before my accident.”
“Nic—”
“You were already leaving.”
“I was trying to figure things out.”
“You signed a 12-month lease with another woman.”
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“So when the car hit me, you decided that was convenient?”
“No!”
His answer came too quickly.
“I swear to God, no.”
“You visited me once.”
“I couldn’t handle seeing you like that.”
“But you could handle emptying our apartment.”
Silence.
“You asked how long I’d be hospitalized.”
“Because I was worried.”
“Were you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you text me every few days asking when I was coming home?”
He had no answer.
That was the answer.
I looked at Lily.
She was watching me with tears running silently down her face.
“You told my daughter to lie to me.”
“I told her not to stress you.”
“You used my daughter to cover what you were doing.”
“That’s not fair.”
Something inside me became very calm.
Maybe there are betrayals so large that anger can’t hold them.
“You’re right,” I said.
He went quiet.
“What’s not fair is that she had to figure out what kind of man you were while I was lying in intensive care.”
“Nicole—”
“The engagement is over.”
“Can we please talk in person?”
“No.”
“We’ve been together six years.”
“And you signed a lease with someone else before I got hit by a car.”
“Please, Nic…”
“Don’t come here tonight.”
“Some of my things are still there.”
“Kayla will arrange for you to collect them.”
“Nicole.”
I ended the call.
That was it.
Kayla took the phone from my hand and put it on the nightstand.
Then Lily whispered, “I’m sorry.”
I turned toward her.
“For what?”
“I should’ve told you sooner.”
I stared at my 15-year-old daughter.
She had spent days noticing boxes disappear.
Listening to lies.
Watching the man who was supposed to help care for her mother quietly dismantle our home.
And she’d been afraid that telling me would make me sicker.
“Come here.”
She leaned into me carefully because of my ribs.
I held her anyway.
“I thought I was supposed to protect you,” I whispered.
“You do.”
“Not this time.”
She pulled back.

I laughed.

Kayla froze the remaining joint funds with the bank that afternoon.
Brandon collected the rest of his belongings later, when I wasn’t there.
