Part 1 — The Pool
I had been carrying the household for fourteen months.
Carl had been laid off when our second child was four weeks old.
I had gone back to work at eight weeks postpartum because there was no other option.
My schedule was: wake at five-thirty, nurse the baby, get our three-year-old ready, drive to work, work eight hours, drive home, nurse again, make dinner, do bedtime for both children, clean whatever needed cleaning, and collapse.
Then repeat.
Carl applied for jobs.
He also made comments.
He said I had gained a lot of weight and maybe it was time to go to the gym.
He said Alice — his brother’s new wife, the one who took heels dance classes and wore short skirts — was the definition of beauty.
He compared me to her frequently.
Each time I explained, calmly, that I was trying to survive.
I was breastfeeding and working full time and raising two children and paying the mortgage and I had not slept more than four consecutive hours in fourteen months.
He nodded like he understood.
He did not understand.
His fortieth birthday party was in our backyard.
A house full of guests.
A rented pool float.
A catered table I had organized because even the party planning had fallen to me.
I put on my swimsuit and walked out to the pool.
Carl and his brother looked at each other.
They started laughing.
I said: what’s going on?
Carl said: sorry, I couldn’t help it. Alice was just swimming and she clearly looks more attractive in a swimsuit than you do.
The yard was not quiet yet.
People were still talking.
Only a few people near us had heard.
I stood there for a moment.
I thought about fourteen months.
I thought about five-thirty in the morning and the nursing and the commute and the dinners and the cleaning.
I thought about the mortgage payments.
I thought about every time I had explained calmly and hoped he understood.
I walked to the table where the microphone was sitting for the birthday speeches.
I picked it up.
Part 2 — The Toast
The yard went quiet when I tapped the microphone.
Carl’s smile was still on his face.
It lasted approximately three more seconds.
I said: everyone, I’d like to make a toast and wish my husband a happy birthday. So listen carefully.
I looked at Carl.
I said: Carl. You are forty years old today and I want to celebrate that. I want to celebrate it honestly, which means I want to say some things publicly that I have been saying privately for fourteen months and which have not seemed to land.
I said: fourteen months ago you were laid off. Four weeks after our second child was born. I went back to work at eight weeks postpartum. Since then I have paid this mortgage, this utility bill, and this catered birthday party you are standing at.
The yard was very quiet.
I said: during those fourteen months you have told me I have gained too much weight. You have compared me to Alice on at least a dozen occasions. And twenty minutes ago, in front of our guests, you told me Alice looks more attractive in a swimsuit than I do.
I said: I want everyone here to understand something. I am standing in a swimsuit at your birthday party at a house I am paying for, having nursed two children, worked full time, and not slept more than four hours consecutively in over a year. And you chose this moment to comment on my appearance.
I said: I am going to ask you one question in front of these people and I would like you to answer it honestly.
I said: when I was supporting you through a difficult period, did I make a single comment about your appearance, your weight, or your attractiveness relative to anyone else?
Carl said nothing.
I said: no. I didn’t. Because that’s not what you do when you love someone.
I set the microphone down.
I said: happy birthday, Carl. I hope forty is the year you figure that out.
Part 3 — After The Party
The guests left gradually.
Some of them stopped to speak to me.
Carl’s college friend David said: for what it’s worth, that needed to be said.
His friend Marcus’s wife said: I have wanted to say something to you for months. I didn’t know how.
Alice — the Alice, his brother’s new wife, the definition of beauty — found me by the food table.
She said: I want you to know I have been uncomfortable every time they compared us. I didn’t know how to stop it.
I looked at her.
I said: it wasn’t about you. You didn’t do anything wrong.
She said: I know. But I wanted to say it anyway.
She said: you did something really hard up there.
I said: I picked up a microphone.
She said: you said the truth in front of everyone. That’s harder than it sounds.
She was right about that.
Carl found me after the last guest left.
The yard was quiet.
The rented pool float bobbed against the edge.
He said: that was humiliating.
I said: yes. I imagine it was.
He said: you didn’t have to do that in front of everyone.
I said: Carl. You said it in front of everyone.
He said nothing.
I said: I have been explaining this to you privately for fourteen months. Privately did not work. So I explained it publicly.
He said: I was joking.
I said: you have been joking for fourteen months. Every joke landed. I felt every one of them.
He said: I didn’t realize—
I said: that’s the part I need you to understand. You didn’t realize. While I was working and nursing and paying and organizing your birthday party, you were not realizing.
He said: I’m sorry.
He said it quietly.
I said: I know.
I said: I need you to understand something else.
He waited.
I said: I am going to start taking care of myself again. Not for you. For me. I am going to find the time somehow because I deserve to have time.
I said: but whether I look like Alice or not is irrelevant to whether I deserve basic respect in my own home.
He said: yes.
He said: you do deserve that.
He said: I have been terrible.
I said: yes. You have.
Part 4 — What Changed
Carl got a job six weeks after the party.
Not because of the microphone.
Because the timing worked out and an offer he had been waiting on came through.
But something in him had shifted after the party.
Not dramatically.
The way things shift when someone has been called to account in front of people they respect and has had to sit with what was said.
He started getting up with the baby on weekends.
He started making dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
He stopped making comments about my appearance.
He also, one evening, said: I watched you at that party and I finally understood what you have been doing. I had been looking at you and seeing someone who had let herself go. I wasn’t seeing what it cost to keep everything running.
I said: yes.
He said: I’m sorry I wasn’t seeing it.
I said: I know.
He said: I want to be the kind of husband you were being to me. When I was laid off you never made me feel like less.
I said: no. I didn’t.
He said: why?
I said: because I loved you and you were in a hard time and that’s what you do.
He said: I’m going to do that.
I said: I’ll tell you if you’re not.
He said: yeah. I know you will.
He almost smiled when he said it.
Part 5 — The Gym
I started going to the gym in February.
Not because Carl asked me to.
Because I wanted to.
There is a difference between those two things and I had spent fourteen months confusing them.
I went on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before work.
I arranged it.
Carl did the morning routine on those days.
He learned to do it without being told twice.
I stood in front of the mirror in February and I did not think about Alice.
I thought about what my body had done in the past two years.
It had grown and delivered two children.
It had worked full time.
It had nursed a baby through fourteen months of broken sleep.
It had stood in a backyard and picked up a microphone.
It was a body that had done a great deal of important work.
It deserved to be taken care of.
I took care of it.
Not for Carl.
Not to look like Alice.
For the fourteen months of five-thirty mornings and the forty-eight hours of labor and the work commute and the nursing and the mortgage and the birthday party I organized while being compared unfavorably to someone who had the time to take heels dance classes.
For all of that.
Some microphones get picked up.
Some toasts get given at pool parties.
Some yards go quiet.
And some people finally understand what they weren’t seeing when the thing they weren’t seeing gets said out loud in front of everyone.
Take care of yourself.
Not for him.
For the fourteen months.
For the work your body did.
For the mortgage you paid.
You earned that gym.
Go on Tuesday and Thursday.
The morning routine will get handled.
He knows now.
