That night, once April had finally fallen asleep in my guest room, curled around a stuffed rabbit that still smelled faintly of Rose’s house, Lucy sat down across from me at the kitchen table and set the purple bag between us without saying a word.

Rachel stood in the doorway, watching, not quite ready to join us at the table but clearly unwilling to be left out of whatever was about to happen.

Arthur’s wedding to Sienna was scheduled for six weeks after Rose’s funeral. The investigation, guided by Rose’s documentation, uncovered a pattern of medication discrepancies traced to Arthur’s access to Rose’s home care supplies, combined with the increased life insurance policy, and a paper trail showing Arthur and Sienna had been planning a future together that depended, financially, on Rose’s illness reaching its worst outcome.

The medical examiner agreed to a more thorough review of Rose’s final months of treatment.

Arthur was arrested nine days before his scheduled wedding, at the venue itself, during a final walkthrough with Sienna.

The wedding never happened.

Detective Ferreira, the lead investigator, told me Arthur had been standing near the reception hall’s floral arrangements when two officers approached. “He didn’t resist. He just kept saying it was a misunderstanding, that Rose’s illness had made her paranoid toward the end, that we’d find nothing once we looked closely enough. Lucy testified about conversations she’d overheard between her parents in the months before Rose’s death. “I knew something was wrong,” she told me, months after the trial. “I just didn’t know what wrong looked like yet. Mom knew I was starting to notice things, I think. That’s part of why she started the recordings — so someone besides a scared kid would have to be believed.”

Arthur was convicted, roughly a year after that afternoon in the cemetery, on charges including fraud and criminal negligence related to Rose’s care, alongside a conviction connected to the deliberate mismanagement of her medication during her final months.

Lucy is fifteen now, quieter than she used to be, but fierce in ways that remind me constantly of her mother. Rachel, twelve, has taken to keeping her own journal. April, nine now, remembers her mother mostly through photographs and the stories her sisters and I tell her.

I adopted all three girls formally within the year following the trial.
