He Left His Wife Alone in Labor to Attend His Mother’s Birthday. Two Days Later, Military Vehicles Pulled Into His Driveway.

What Ryan had never known, in three years of marriage, was that Claire was not a stay-at-home wife. She was an active-duty officer in the United States Army. And what he had never known about her father was going to be waiting in his driveway two days later. Part 2 is what happened while Ryan was at the birthday party.

Ryan parked behind the last vehicle and sat in his car for three minutes before getting out. My father waited without moving. Part 3 is what happened in the driveway.

I heard him on the stairs. I heard him stop in the hallway outside our bedroom door. I heard him knock quietly, which he had never done in three years of marriage. Part 4 is what happened when he came in.

The decisions came slowly. A separation first, then counseling Ryan had not been required to do before and which required him to be honest in rooms where honesty was not optional. What happened over the following six months — and what my father said to me the morning I finally made the permanent decision — is Part 5.
