PART 2
I grabbed the counter.
“Back where?”
Yolanda finally let herself smile.
“To the director’s office. He walked in at 3:30, took the leash out of the vet’s hand, and said, ‘This one’s going home.’ He’s been waiting for you.”
Luke had to hold me up for a completely different reason now.
The director, Mr. Delacroix, opened his office door.
Ranger was lying on the rug with his gray muzzle on his paws.
When he heard my voice, his head came up. His tail started thumping on the floor. He tried to stand too fast on his bad hip and stumbled.
I sat down on the floor right there. Stitches and all.
He put his head in my lap and pressed his whole body against me, the way he used to after a long patrol.
Mr. Delacroix cleared his throat.
“I’m a Marine,” he said. “Iraq, 2005. A dog like this walked in front of my squad every day for seven months. Nobody puts one of these down on my watch because somebody lied on a form.”
Then he handed me a copy of the surrender paperwork.
Under “Reason for surrender,” my mother had written: “Bit a child. Dangerous. Owner no longer wants him. Do not contact.”
Do not contact.
She’d made sure nobody would call me until it was over.
The only reason they did was Yolanda. She scanned his chip anyway, saw the military tattoo in his ear, and didn’t believe a word of it.
I filed a police report from the shelter parking lot.
Making a false statement and surrendering someone else’s animal is theft in our state. The deputy took one look at Ranger’s service record and said, “Ma’am, I’ll handle this personally.”
Mom called me that night, furious.
“How dare you send the police to my house?”
“You signed a paper saying I didn’t want him, Mom. And that he bit a child.”
“I was protecting my grandson!”
“Beau was in the NICU,” I said. “You weren’t protecting anyone. You wanted my house for Tawny.”
She didn’t answer.
Because it was true. Tawny had been evicted two weeks before. “Helping with the baby” meant moving in for good. And Ranger, who growls at anyone who walks into my bedroom uninvited, was in the way.
Mom was charged with theft and filing a false report. She paid restitution and took a class. Tawny never moved in.
I haven’t spoken to either of them since.
Beau came home from the NICU nine days later.
The first night, I set his bassinet next to our bed.
Ranger limped over, sniffed my son very gently from his toes to his head, and lay down on the floor beside him.
He didn’t move all night.
He hasn’t slept anywhere else since.
Yolanda comes by every few weeks with dog treats. Mr. Delacroix sent Beau a tiny camouflage onesie that says “K-9 Unit in Training.”
My son’s first word wasn’t “mama.”
It was “Ra.”
THE END.

Loyalty isn’t about blood. It’s about who walks in front of you when it’s dangerous.
Would you ever forgive your mother for this? Tell us in the replies.
