I didn’t have time to think.
I did the only thing I knew would work.
When Daisy was little, we used to play Red Light, Green Light in the backyard every night. She never broke the rule. Not once. It was her favorite game in the world.
I cupped my hands and screamed across the field as loud as I’ve ever screamed anything.
“DAISY! RED LIGHT!”
She stopped.
Dead still. One foot in the air.
Ten feet from the fence.
Coach Benning, the PE teacher, sprinted the last thirty yards and scooped her up.
On the other side of the fence, Tom’s smile disappeared.
“Come on, sweetheart!” he shouted. “Your daddy’s waiting for you!”
Daisy buried her face in the coach’s shoulder.
Then Tom saw me running across the grass.
“You stole her!” he yelled. “She belongs with her blood! You can’t keep a Kell from her family!”
He jumped back in the truck and threw it in reverse.
He made it to the end of the block.
The first police car turned the corner and blocked him in. The second one came up behind.
He tried to say he was “just saying hi to his niece.”
Then the officers looked inside the truck.
A booster seat. A pink suitcase with little girl clothes, tags still on. A printed map to a cabin in western Montana.
And a birth certificate with Daisy’s photo clipped to it.
The name on it was “Daisy Kell.”
It was fake.
The investigation took two months.
The prison had recorded every one of Travis’s phone calls. He’d been planning it with Tom since the summer. Tom had found Daisy’s school through a Facebook post from her class field trip.
For six weeks, Tom had been standing at that fence during recess, pretending to walk his dog. Passing candy and notes through the gap.
“Once she’s with us, she’s not going back,” Travis said on one recording. “That woman will never see her again.”
Tom pleaded guilty to attempted kidnapping and violating a court order.
Travis was charged with conspiracy. His parole hearing was canceled.
The school fixed the fence the next week. They added a recess monitor on every side of the field.
That night, Daisy cried in my lap for a long time.
“I’m sorry I kept a secret,” she said. “He said you’d be mad. He said you weren’t my real mommy.”
I held her face in my hands.
“Baby, I’m not mad. You did nothing wrong. Grown-ups who ask you to keep secrets from me are the ones doing something wrong.”
Then, for the first time, I told her the whole story about her mommy. Gently. The parts a seven-year-old could hold.
She listened very quietly.
The next morning, I found a new note in my sock drawer.
Yellow paper. Crayon.
“Dear Mama Robin. No more secrets. Red light means I love you. Love, Daisy.”
It’s framed in my office now. Right above my desk.
