I was thirteen years old the day my father threw my duffel bag into the dirt and told me to walk home.
It was August, and it was hot enough that the vinyl seat of his truck burned through my shorts. We’d been driving for about forty minutes without a word between us. That wasn’t unusual. My dad didn’t talk much. He used silence instead, and he expected you to work out what the silence meant. If you got it wrong, that was your problem.
He turned off the highway onto a dirt road I’d never seen before. Gravel popped under the tires. Fields on both sides. Fence posts. No houses.
He stopped the truck but didn’t put it in park. He just held his foot on the brake.
“Get out,” he said.
I looked at him. I honestly thought he was joking. He used to do that kind of thing. He’d pretend he was going to leave me at a gas station if I took too long picking out a candy bar, then laugh when I ran across the lot after him. That was my father’s idea of a joke.
“I’m serious, Thomas. Get out of the truck.”
Something in his voice told me to grab my bag, so I did. I stepped down onto the gravel. The heat came up off the road in waves. The quiet was so complete it made my ears ring.
He leaned across the seat and looked at me through the open passenger door.
“Walk home,” he said. “Maybe it’ll toughen you up.”
Then he pulled the door shut and drove away.
I stood there with my bag at my feet and watched the dust settle behind his tailgate. I kept waiting for the truck to come back around the bend. Five minutes went by, maybe thirty. I don’t know. When you’re thirteen and alone on a road you don’t know, time stops working the normal way.
The truck didn’t come back.
So eventually I picked up my bag and started walking.
To explain how a man ends up doing that to his own son, I have to go back a little.
My mom died when I was eight. Ovarian cancer. She was thirty-one, which is the age I am now, and that still messes with my head some nights. Her name was Elaine. She had round, careful handwriting and laughed with her whole face, and she read to me every night until she got too weak to hold the book. After that she had me read to her.
After she was gone, it was just me and my dad, Ray Whitfield. He was a roofer, with strong hands and a short temper. He believed boys should be raised the way you train a dog: consistent discipline, no coddling, and never let them see you soft.
I wasn’t the son he wanted. I liked books. I was quiet. I cried at my mother’s funeral, and on the drive home he told me it had been embarrassing.
I was eight.
