At 4:30 in the morning, my husband walked into our kitchen and said one word.
“Divorce.”
I was standing at the stove in my bare feet. The tile was cold. Bacon was hissing in the skillet. A bottle was warming in a mug of hot water next to the coffee maker. And strapped against my chest in a soft gray wrap, my two-month-old son was sleeping with one tiny fist tangled in my shirt.
His parents were arriving at eight o’clock for breakfast.
His sister had texted me at 1:17 that morning, while I was in the nursery feeding the baby, to remind me that their mother liked her eggs soft and her toast dry. Like I was an unpaid employee. Not a woman who’d given birth eight weeks earlier and hadn’t slept more than three hours in a row since.
Then the front door opened.
Mark came in with his tie loose and his hair damp from the fog. His phone was already in his hand. He’d been out all night. I didn’t ask where.
He looked at the folded cloth napkins on the dining room table. The serving dishes I’d pulled down from the top cabinet. The breakfast casserole cooling on the counter. The fruit I’d cut at two in the morning.
Then he looked at me like I was a piece of furniture he’d decided to replace.
“Divorce,” he said.
No explanation. No apology. No sitting down.
Just that one word, while I stood there barefoot and exhausted, holding his newborn son.
My heart hit my ribs so hard I thought it would wake the baby. But Noah only shifted closer against me, warm and trusting, and kept sleeping.
Mark stood there waiting.
I knew exactly what he was waiting for. Tears. Begging. Me grabbing his arm and asking what I did wrong. That’s what I’d done every time he went cold on me for the last year.
Instead, I reached over and turned off the stove.
His expression changed.
“Did you hear me?”
“I heard you,” I said.
I carried Noah down the hallway to our bedroom. I pulled my old navy suitcase down from the top shelf of the closet. I’d had it since college.
I packed diapers. Wipes. Four bottles and the can of formula. Two sleepers and the little hat with bear ears my mother knitted. My laptop. My passport. Noah’s birth certificate and his hospital records in a blue plastic folder.
Then I knelt down beside my nightstand. I pressed the loose wooden panel on the inside of the bottom drawer, the one that popped out if you pushed the left corner just right.
And I took out a thick gray folder that Mark had never once noticed.
My name is Rebecca Mercer. Before I married Mark, I was a senior corporate auditor at a firm in Columbus. For eleven years, my job was finding money that powerful people believed they’d hidden.
Getting married didn’t erase that skill.
It only gave me a reason to use it quietly.
